There are 2 ways of looking at this. The internet has ensured that one can see all sides of a story IF the person looks for it but there is also the risk of algorithms putting people deep into rabbit holes and ensures confirmation biases thus falling prey to targeted propaganda.

But I believe that it is much easier to spot and break free from propaganda today than it was many years ago when we depended on traditional media houses.

I do not agree with this bold part of ur statement , I agree totally with Afrodoc on this .

Myself for example , growing up I read TELL magazine , The news magazine , and dem Newswatch which my old man buys weekly . They tell stories of how things happen in the real sense of it.

In modern times I’ve read a lot of nonsense posted by youngings on social media all in the name of blogging/journalism and I shake my head . You will see nonsense headlines that don’t agree with the body of the news article , you begin to wonder who even edited such nonsense before it made it to the news.

I also read a lot of books about the history of the country , about the civil wars and political dispensations that were told from a first person point of view . I read books like Wole Soyinka’s the man died, different accounts of the civil war from different authors with different biases and a discerning mind can always point out the facts in those books . What do we have today ? Just nonsense being posted on social media and when u decide to engage the author they will just veer off course and can’t defend their write-ups.

I will never forget one bad boy in my school that was about 2 or 3 years my junior. His grandfather was one of the senior imams in Ibadan and the guy used to come first in IRK every term scoring 90-95%.

Then one term some Christian seniors in his hostel preached to him and he became born again. He switched to CRK and scored like 85% and was the first in the whole class.

He went home and his grandfather beat shege into his life. He turned Muslim again came back and scored about 90% in IRK and was first again.

All the Christian boys in his class were punished for disgracing themselves. grin

The boy is just brilliant than all of them. That's all. grin

People like that were very common in the SW because in the 60s 70s most schools were missionary schools so even Moslems wey wan go school most likely will go to a Missionary school and learn all the prayers and biblical things.. You will see an Alfa that will recite Bible verses accurately

Na when you graduate you go come embrace your Islam. Many of them got converted to Xtianity though

I agree with Donjazet2. If you're the type that used to read a lot before the advent of the Internet, you'll still continue the same habit with the Internet.

In today's information age, it's easier to break free from propaganda and superstitious beliefs than it was 20 years ago when there was no Internet, when most people didn't have access to some books and some information.

For someone like me, I don't rely on only results on the first page of Google when trying to read up on a subject like history. I read wide from diverse sources including contradictory references.

The Internet has made it extremely easy to gain access to information on tons of subjects and topics — something that was difficult in the pre-Internet days.

Now, you can read up on a topic and gain mastery of it with some hours of research using the Internet.

Away from that, history is one of the most subjects in any education system and should be taken more seriously by the government.

I think Literature was also an option then but was mainly for Arts student since those who wanted to study law must have Literature

For a Science student beside the English Maths Physics Chemistry Biology that were mandatory Geography, Economics, Agric were adopted by those who wants to study courses in Faculty of Agric, Economics and Geography for those who wanted to do Social Sciences

After JSS3 results , I was literally placed into Science class without my consent simply because I pack A’s full result and they felt the guy with the best result in the school should definitely belong to science class .

I walked into the Vice principal’s office and demanded that I be placed in Commercial class; VP wan craze grin. Like she would have none of that, but I was persistent and told her that was what I wanted . She even insisted I bring my parents and have them confirm they are okay with my decision before she obliged .

Very true. The baddest guy i saw in Uni was a conc Muslim but very friendly and selfless guy. The guy was in final year when i was in 200L. If you the ikebe some of those hijab girls (and fellowship girls too) were using to beg this guy just to give them extra lessons. grin

Some boys started looking for ways to drag him down, like meeting him on the road and asking him for the chemical structure or genetic code of different amino acids. The guy will gently draw it for them on a sheet of paper or napkin and innocently go on his way. grin

With traditional media, you have reputable men staking their reputation and certificate behind their publication

Unlike now where anyone can just say anything without consequence

Those people you talk about don't read a lot. Without the Internet, they'd still exhibit the same attitude because they don't do a lot of reading and research.

Social media only exposes them and makes it easier for them to spread fake news and misinformation.

Same when I enter uni. He did my admission into medicine. I cross Comot go computer for 2nd year. He didn’t know that I crossed until I enter 300L. Though I do regret am sometimes though.

Socrates is one of my favorite philosophers and this is because he wants people to question everything. I believe in questioning your own truth, especially as we evolve as humans, it helps with learning and being able to absorb new information.

When I hold an opinion I take some time to study opposing thoughts about it and try to find substantive reasoning behind their position.
