This article on Metro sums up the whole motive behind the Ukrainian settlement scheme.

https://metro.co.uk/2022/04/14/we-should-care-about-all-asylum-seekers-not-just-ones-who-look-like-us-16440666/

The whole summary of it is it wasn't particularly motivated by care for humanity, but rather by care for "humans who look like us".

Before nko? Humans are tribal in nature. I have more in common with someone from Bayelsa than someone from Kwara. Should a war break out in Nigeria, I rather accommodate someone from Plateau/Taraba instead of someone from Sokoto or Zamfara. It is basic human nature. That is the reason Africans should not be bothered whether two European brothers are killing themselves. In fact, it was Ukrainians that were stopping Africans from escaping, not Russians. The West has never condemned the butchering of Christians in Nigeria but laments the decline of Christianity in Europe. To augment the population, she opened doors to white-looking Arabs, but shoot boats ferrying black Africans.

One thing I like about nairaland is, you can easily get a poll result without carrying out any research.

All the conversation has been about student coming to UK to contribute to taxes. The £15k pound adds to the purse of the school/ government

I don’t think I read anyone value the education gotten in return or even attributed some of the amount paid (our assumed £15k) to any quality or value of the education received or to be received.

Does that mean that we all came here for solely migration and no course for self improvement in the form of education?

This! 👍

I disagree with this part - Afghans, Syrians and Iranians have had to jump through hoops to be able to come here to claim asylum.
The carpet was rolled out for Ukrainians - their scheme easily allowed fleeing Ukrainians to come here and was/is a huge contrast to the Afghan settlement scheme, which sparked uncomfortable public debate.

Oh, I think I get your point now. But tbh, bringing non immigrant vs immigrant Visa argument to a UK immigration discussion seems off topic.

The last time I checked, it's the US, not the UK, that uses such categorisation. And even in that US, many non immigrant visas like H1B, L1, O1 are dual-intent routes, meaning holders can switch from them to various categories of employment based migrant visas aka green card.

And the non dual intent like F1 has options for things like OPT, which you can switch from first to H1B, and then later to a migrant Visa, so long you meet the requirements.

And that's my point in the other post you quoted. It's normal for people, regardless of their original route into a country, to switch from one immigration status to another. It doesn't matter the Visa you came with, as long as you undergo the lawful process, nobody should call it backdoor migration.

Noted, completely agree with you. But there 8s a distinction between settlement and non settlement visas. Dependants on spousal visas are scrutinised more critically and the requirements are a lot more than dependants on tier 4 visas if my info is still current. If tier 4 visa holders had to bring in their dependants on the requirements set out for those on spouse visas, a lot of us won't meet the requirements.

Yes lawful process is good, and if you follow it why not bring your entire family. The numbers don't lie, we will come back next year and see the statistics with the number of students that will come from Nigeria to study or whose original intention was to 'migrate' when these rules begin.

We go dey alright las las, this is not the first time they changed rules for students and will not be the last. There 8s always a boom and bust, it is always cyclical.

Hello,

Someone should please recommend a good chair and table for someone working from home please. Would appreciate if there’s a link I can even use to make the order. Make the Chair and table be between £100-£150

Multiple recommendations are welcome 😁

Thank you.

Hello house
sorry to derail from current discussion(s)

Please I need advice and it’s a long read
I was in a serious relationship before deciding to move to the UK on study route, we decided to get married and come together.
Now I am done with studies and currently on tier 2 visa (support work). I studied MSc Human Resources management btw.
The issue now is… my partner has an OND in marine engineering and minimal experience, age is also not on his side. And he is currently working in care.
I don’t want us to be stuck on this care work for too long. And I have been overthinking lately on what else is there to do, especially for him. As I still have my masters to fall back on. I keep asking him what he would like to do personally but it keeps changing. It’s almost like he doubts his own ability to take up some new career opportunities. We have tried cyber security but I don’t think he has any motivation for it. And I don’t want us to keep wasting time and money on it.

Please which other career options would you advise on based on this brief background information. I just want him to have something very stable going for him, especially since he is the dependant and has the flexibility to do almost any job or business.. we don’t mind the cost of training or the cost to startup a business, as long as it is a realistic long term investment.

He seems almost depressed with the care job and sometimes it’s as if I’m being blamed for bringing up the travelling/relocation idea, which I did because even back home things were stagnant and I did not see any future plans for improvement.

This is probably part of the essence, of this thread.........

The issue you might have been having in the past, is attempting to dictate the pace........

What exactly does he want to do (not you setting the pace)........ 😜🤣

You are very right. One of the reasons it was called a back door immigration route as it circumvents the more stringent processes involved in the settlement routes.

Some more information about your husband's background would help better match him to a career he might enjoy and be good at...

Did he practise and enjoy marine engineering in Nigeria? What was his occupation?

What about other engineering fields? Is he hands on/ technical?

What are his interests? Financial markets, trading, construction etc?

Is he a people person, outgoing etc - would customer service or project management type roles appeal?

Is he good at Maths, Science - would he enjoy teaching?

Would he be open to an entry level role to enable him gain experience in the field he chooses?

While trying to figure what to do, he can try customer service jobs instead.

Regarding career, he is the best to decide what he wants to do. I would have suggested IT but you said he has tried Cybersecurity but didn't enjoy it. What about going into Rail industry? He would have to do training and get PTS/others. I know there is a lot of money and jobs in the Rail industry.

It is not about boasting, it is what I see everyday. Also, all these talks depends on the people in your circle.

Unfortunately some Nigerians will get information and they don't make use of it. I won't dispute the fact that majority of us just follow the care work bandwagon. It's very sad.

All the info that got me where I am today was from here. I never for once did a care job in uk.

All the Nigerians I met throughout my stay in the UK are doing very well in their various fields. This is not 1 out of 100. These are people that are ready to make use of the system and not the other way round.
