i stopped reading at the first paragraph when I saw #1.3m as your annual rent. If your 2months salary cannot settle your annual house rent, then you're living above your means.

Let me help you

1. Inverter will reduce your fuel cost and consumption in the long run.
2. Food, try buying in bulk, but 2k a day is not bad but buying in bulk is cheaper
3. Reduce the outgoing
4. Reduce Gift to people

from your spending break down, apart from rent, you’re not really spending so much tbh .

What you should do is.
Get a solar inverter, I have the one of 425000 naira, it will power tv, inverter washing machine, laptop, phones , blender and fan. It runs 24/7.. that will save you money on gen and maintenance .

Find apartment of 800 k max. This means your two months salary will cover your house rent .

Your car Maintenance is too high , haba, when no be fourth hand car u buy. Your car maintenance shouldn’t be more than 30k max including fuel since u no Dey waka waka much .

Your feeding fee is very ok, infact I spend x2 of that for food .

Other expenses up there are normal to me

Oga abeg no vex o, how does this solar inverter work?? Can I charge it with generator??

How can you be living in an accomodation of N1.3 million per annum with 400k monthly salary. That is way too much.
So many Nigerians live above their means and that's why they keep being under pressure.

You are living above your means of livelihood. You should be saving 300k a month. Go for a house of say 350k, 30k a month. Fuel for car 20k. Enter public transport. Stop using a generator. Savings from above 288k. Thank me later. I do same with wife and two kids.

The salary is 400k, the total budget is 556k, the homeoffice is what provides the extra... 10k electricity is a whole month light oo... my neighbour does 15k sef, had to ask because i thought i was being cheated.. the 50k is for 2hrs or less light...20ltrs/week..(3ltrs/day).. the car fuel is based on the new price.. fill up cost 36k/5-6days for 9-5 work to earn the 400k/mth..

Where am i getting it wrong ?

Get a flatmate to split the rent with.

N1.3m as rent on a monthly income of N400k?

I dont think there is any average place on the mainland where you will get a 1 bedroom flat of less than 500k-600K. Gbagada, Ketu, Akoka, Mushin, Surulere , Gbagada...you will likely not find, particularly not one with parking space and safe. Except you want him to move to Ikorodu or some other distant location.

If he is married and needs a 2 bedroom apartment , then definitely its atleast N1M in those places for a decent one

This is a big man thing ooo! 😀

I think you should work on your rent, first. That amount is too much considering what you're earning monthly.

It's more advisable to buy food stuff in bulk; it saves money...

Lastly, reduce the amount you spend on social lifestyle.

It's important you work on your budget before you get married and start having kids. You might run into debt if you're not conscious of how you spend your money.

you pay that rent per month and still spend that much on fuel per month.

What perks does a house with that high rent bring?

Kindly redo that budget.

1.3m for a 2bedroom apartment on a salary of 400k per month is on the high side. You need to work on your rent. Get an agent on the mainland. I'm sure he'll you'll get decent 2bedroom flats (or one bedroom flat) which would definitely be way cheaper than your current place.

From your post, you work from home. So why would you need to use the car for 5-6 days. If you're using a 4 cylinder engine and you fill your tank, it should last you for up to 2 weeks (or more) provided you're not a Waka Waka person.

If you work from home, I'll suggest you get a laptop with very strong battery, that way you can still remain online for hours after power outage. Also, get a rechargeable standing fan. The one I bought lasts up to 7hours when fully charged. This would help you at night so you can preserve your fuel and won't have to put on the gen if the weather gets hot. That way your gen would only be put on when you want to work and have low battery. With the new fuel price, one has to adjust in order to survive.

If you like cooking, I'll advise you to stock your kitchen with provisions. Yam, rice, beans, noodles, beverages...etc. The cost of procuring these stuffs would be high no doubt, but for the next few months, you won't have to buy anything. Meaning you'll have lots of money to save.

Close eye and get a washing machine. So that this 4k per month can be channeled to something else.

Gift to people kwa, for this renewed shege era. Biko strike that away from your budget.

You put auto maintenance at 30k, health 5k and hygiene 10k. Which other repairs and maintenance is this one again?

After budgeting 62k for feeding for the month, which one is outings and sit outs again?

How can your budget be more than your income? 🙄

You'll have to cut your coat according to the cloth. You can skip breakfast, eat a light lunch and have swallow for dinner. Everything shouldn't be more than 1k. Meaning you'll be saving 1k. That's something if you ask me.

Unless your car is Nigerian used, running these checks and changes every month isn't necessary and a complete waste of money. I changed my break pad September last year and this is May, I'm still using it. Same with shock, Tyre...etc. As long as you bought a decent car, it won't be swallowing up your money every now and then.

If you're using your gen for 2hours or less per day, 20 liters should last you more than a month. Most especially if you're in an area where power supply is decent.

It's simple, wear clothes you can afford, eat foods you can afford, date people within your range, don't go broke and in debt trying to impress anyone...Live within your means.

Op kindly follow this advice. Infact look for a new house

I'm guessing you work remotely.

What's stopping you from getting a mini flat an using bedroom as an home office? You earn 400k and you're using over 3months salary in rent? Are you high?

For your gen, do you run gen 247?, You can get a laptop power bank and a rechargeable standing fan inscse Nepa misbehaves.

I earn 260k and manage to save atleast 90k monthly after black tax, food, etc.

Well, I don't have a car yet and my apartment is 180 for a selfcon in the heart of Lagos, close to Ikeja GRA.

Review your budget and live within your means, young man.

This lifestyle ain’t for you. I was running on a $3k/ month when my woman had our second issue, yet we had no car to our name.
You just gotta be yourself man. Scale down and diversify. That source ain’t permanent. Use your head while it lasts. Aim at getting your own land and developing it gradually.
Stop living someone else’s life. Just scale down and be real with yourself.
Shalom.

The First RED FLAG is your RENT:
with 400k take home, Your Rent Must Not Exceed (400*2months)= 800k per Year MAX.

That guy is just a very unserious person. Imagine his budget for things that makes absolutely no sense. Upon 400k, na 20k him budget as black tax.

There are many loopholes to save money that he's being blind to.

The person no tell you truth.
If some families live on 200k monthly expenses, why wouldn't he save the remaining 200k and build? Are you saying families can't live on 200k? If this guy reduces his fuelling alone, do you know how much he will save from fuel alone?

How can you be living in an accomodation of N1.3 million per annum with 400k monthly salary. That is way too much.

That's where his woes started from.... There's something called financial intelligence, and financial discipline and good sense of management.

#I hate pressure of any kind, and that's why i never lived above my means. ....Tho I am not in naija for now, but the way i handle finance is sweet and emulating. I gathered abt 22M within four years, and in 2021 i spent jst abt 9M to arrange a decent 3 bedroom bungalow . Lavished 1M on my family and renovated my daddy's house... Today i stil hav enough. I don't feel good if there's no reasonable balance in my bank acct.... Dangote once said " he prefer to hav than to spend".... It's difficult for me to spend on irrelevant things. And i hav learnt to always sew my coat according to my material.

Total = N556,500...

My rent is average rent for where i stay, its a two bed flat, i use the other room for home office..

Feeding is N2,000/day.. its not anything out of the ordinary.. tried cooking and spent more with time wasting.

Fuel for car is at the new rate of N500/ltr, my car is a 70ltr car tank..

Auto maintenance is basic brake pads, shocks, service 2mths, tire guage, police pr, tire purchase if any, minor touch ups etc... nothing major.

Fuel for generator is 20ltr/day (2hrs or less daily)

I need help.... how are you people doing it, what am i doing wrong? The rat race is killing me..

WHere exactly do you live ?
Secondly, you don't service cars twice a month except you're into transport biz.
Your rent is also too expensive for you at the moment.

It's obvious he hasn't understood anything about management.
Cut your accommodation expenses by 50%, man...(i.e start searching for a cheaper or a self-contained apartment asap)

400k per month, large family, building a house (all in Lagos) doesn't work oga

He either has another source of funds (stealing/begging at work, wife, side hustle, rich relatives etc.), he is lying to you or they are living in sub zero conditions.
