What you said about him not being super impressive but just doing his job properly is what made him so good. He also in my opinion made Xavi and Iniesta better knowing he would be there to cover gave them more freedom to attack in possession and also allowed them to stay in more dangerous positions out of possession. He's often overlooked because everyone just talked about how good Xavi and iniesta were which they were great but he really helped get the best out of them,People always say it was easy for him as he had Xavi and Iniesta beside him but imo it was easy for them because he was beside them. He was always available for them to tick the ball over and keep it moving. He absolutely dictated the play and was always where he should be.

It's hard to really praise defensive midfielders as the work they do is forgettable as there's so much of it. Stats don't help them out either but just go back and watch matches from the early to mid 2010's and you'll see why he's rated so highly.
