Amedino99: The AFCON is holding at the middle of the season. Clubs may likely not release players till like a week to the AFCON and so there may not be enough time to organize standard friendlies. |

Icon4s:Yes of course but Osimehn need Afcon trophy,WC qualification irrespective of number of goals to be the real guy….even I don’t see APOTY as a big deal cuz am seeing him winning it…the koko is Afcon and World Cup qualification. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

charlesemeka85:The two belonged to different era,so nobody is going to beat you on football matters or discourse….Nigeria want to see Osimehn influence in Afcon and world qualification, nothing more. Pls mirror Yekini against São Tomé and tell me how many goals he would have scored. 1 Like |

Kog45: Yes, I quite agree. Osimhen is hardly yet to achieve anything with the national team. Osimhen is just one goal short of Yakabu, three short of Odegbami and 17 short of Yekini. Barring any dip in form or long term injuries, he is looking on course to overtake Yekini. ...........but, just like many others, I still feel he is yet to attain his full potential for the national team. The Principe and Sao Tome games really helped his career. I don't know how many of such teams he will face for the rest of his career. Yekini was scoring braces against highly rated teams like Ivory Coast and Algeria back then. Osimhen is yet to taste any world cup action and yet to play in any AFCON final let alone to win it. I still believe if Yekini was playing in today's football he will be ahead of Osimhen in the national team pecking order. 3 Likes |

ChrisKels: I had to think again and it just occurred to me that in the absence of Ekong and Ndidi; Osimhen, Simon and Iheanacho were the oldest on the pitch. I think Simon was taken out and Ihenacho doesn't seem to have that captaincy spirit. |

Osimhen has to win something with the SE before we can do a comprehensive comparison with baba Yekini but we can evaluate their playing styles. Yekini and Osimhen have similar big stature although Victor looks slimmer and slicker. Both are very single minded in wanting to score goals. Both are good in the air but Osimhen is better. Both have powerful shots but Rashidi's are like rocket launchers. Both have great hold up play but are not the most technical of players. Osimhen is faster and his goal scoring prowess in the national team started quite early in his career whereas it took awhile before baba Yekini became prolific. The scary thing about Victor is that I don't think he's reached his peak yet. I'm optimistic by God's grace if Osimhen stays injury free he will break Yekini's national team record in no time. Yes you're right Yekini was banging in goals against top African opposition like Cameroon, Egypt, Algeria and Ivory Coast. If Osimhen wants to attain legendary status as far as the national team is concerned then scoring against the likes of Lesotho and Sao Tome won't cut it. Icon4s: |

Icon4s:Give Osimhen the MF and wingers in yekini time and see him get hattricks and Quadruples against those countries. The team of Yekini era was spoonfeeding him. From Oliseh to Amotaxi to JayJay to finidi.and Adepoju. Bring Yekini to this era and see him struggle. No disrespect to the king tho. I know I followed him from from beginning till he drew the curtain in 98. Against the world at US94 and France98 he was totally lost. Worst was against Italy. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Yekini for all his greatness scored 37 goals in all his apps for the national team, that isn't particularly prolific if you're to be honest. I expect Osimhen to surpass that goal record in under 2 years time. 3 Likes 1 Share |

I'm looking at it from the quality of opposition Yekini faced. I already said earlier that it took time before he found his scoring boots charlesemeka85: |

Icon4s:even if he doesn’t win any because winning a tournament is handily done by a single player unless in rare circumstances (Argentina’s World Cup triumph in 1986 which was single handedly masterminded by the great maradona) it won’t rob him of he’s legendary status in Nigerian football if he eventually tops the former goal records in the national team Winning the serie A trophy as well as emerging as top scorer last season and also likely to win the next APOTY award is already massive accomplishment for young osimhen He will achieve all this under the age of 25 2 Likes 1 Share |
