You are right to an extent. Part of the reason is that there is no uniformity in standard of materials. People source the locally available materials, whether sand, granite or cement for their construction needs. These materials are not always there same.
Differences exist in terms of their composition and aggregate. For instance, the moisture content, impurities, particle sizes and natural composition often differ. These variations will effect mix ratio.
Therefore without experience, it would be naive and counterproductive to go by any standard mix ratio . So, those ratios only serve as guide. In practice, it is advisable to actually go by what is on ground. A little more or a little less from the acceptable ratio.
If one must use ratio, then standard materials must be sourced for consistency . Stores like Home Depot, lowes etc have sand in cement like bags that have pass through quality control from the bagging factory. With those, one can’t go wrong with standard mix ratio.

U guys r absolutely right about this mixing ratio, imagine using the same mixing ratio to mix 3/4 granite and 3/4 down granite,u will definitely get different results

please can someone let me know what they think about the usage of cement for my plastering work
My plastering guys have used up 35 bags of cement to plaster the internals of a 2 bedroom flat with each rooms having toilet and bathroom and plastering of under decking for flat. I think the cement usage is much and i am not there to monitor this work. can someone who have done similar work share what their experience is like in terms of the cement usage...

i have 3 units of 2 bedrooms to still plaster including the external walls, with the way they are going i may spend ore on cement.
my current cement and sand ratio is 1:10 - 1 bag of cement for 10 head pan of sand.

please help!!!

I actually don't think they've used more than they shd...

If you give me the surface area or linear lenght, I can calculate the quantity for you...

But 35 for a standard 2 bedroom under a decking is not much....

That been said.... It can be calculated to be triple sure.

At this stage, as described by you... EVEN IF you rammer it has little or no effect.

Proceed with your German Floor, six month in a raining season is more than enough.

A lot of engineers understand these BUT fear of failure of the structure on the part of the Client and the Builders makes many people to alter their design on site.

Secondly, you can’t do these on a project where you’ have a limited budget. Neither can you achieve these on a project where the contractor/engineer only visit the site whenever he feels like. It’s a job that requires total attention to details.

The consultant engineer on my project always show up unannounced to check what we’re doing on the project site.

I was part of the construction of one massive hall project (not as the main contractor but as a finisher) during the Covid-19, regardless of what the engineers and the engineering drawings said on the project, the client insisted that columns must be introduced at the center of the hall to support the roof.

double your budget for something really good. I got this one called predator. It's a foreign used but trust me, it's almost over a year of steady usage and I only buy engine oil.

Many people who bought after I did,(all these China imported) have either replaced or managing their own. And it's used for welding works

Managing construction projects in Nigeria is tough. I bought safety helmets for some of my Cotonou guys, they started using the helmet to drink garri.
I bought my welder a very nice safety welding glasses, he stated using it as a fashion glass.

I paid a subcontractor to deliver me windows, he travelled to Mecca 😂😂

And this is something you have to deal with and accept responsibility for everyday.

You’re buying the Gen because you’re the project manager on your project.

I took a generator to a client’s project at no cost to the client.
While suppliers were trying to drop filling materials for him, the truck lost control and ran over my generator.

The client said why did we leave the generator where it was.

This didn’t happen behind him. He was there physically when the truck ran over the generator and the welders working on the project were using the generator as at that time.

I fixed the generator and move on 😂😂

The cost of pumping water on a project is often being overlooked until you’re acting as a project manager.

If you’re not called to fix the Gen, you’re buying oil or at the point of need rushing to buy fuel. They might even call to tell you the generator has been stolen or ask you to employ a security guard to watch over the generator as no one is ready to take liability and you have to do your best to ensure the site keeps running.

This explains the reason I always have 2 generators on every site whether paid for or not. My mental health is very important to me.

leaving the generator under the rain can never make the coil to go bad. However turning on the generator while the coil is still wet is sheer carelessness and stupidity

Water is the best for compaction of soil, it removes the pores and compacts the soil in the process.
However, this method of casting the ground floor after raising the wall to lintel level is a wrong practise. You are supposed to have cast the ground floor foundation before raising the superstructural walls.
This method exposes the foundation to vegetation growth that causes movement within the foundation and cracking . Also the overiste concrete would not be well placed on the foundation blocks and can cause subsidence of the concrete and raising dampness.

The choice of whether to compact or not , will depend on how leveled and strong the top surface is. If there are depressions then you refill and compact and if the is need to cut off excess fill do so, to have an even thickness of the concrete.
