The imposition of the moratorium was sequel to the findings of the Council of Legal Education which showed that the university’s Law Faculty was currently having a backlog of over 347 law students waiting to be admitted into the Nigerian Law School.

“Baze University runs a three (3)-year LL.B programme for some UTME candidates without the approval of National Universities Commission (NUC), Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB and Council of Legal Education.”

The statement further noted that “Under the NUC Minimum Benchmark Academic Standard (BMAS) for law degree programme in Nigerian Universities, Law is a five (5)-year programme for UTME candidates and four (4)-year for Direct Entry students.

I could remember when OAU Faculty of Law was sanctioned by the same NUC, nobody termed it political because they failed to meet the requirements.

Baze University and Nigerian Law School have always been clashing. Always.

When I went to Law School, Dino Melaye was supposed to resume with us but because of the technicalities involved in that school, he wasn't able. Infact, nobody from Baze University attended Law School that whole year.

I had someone who went to that same university and he went to Law School two years later.

PS: Even my own university's faculty had partial accreditation from Law School one time. They literally had to sit up!!!!

Na political Law Faculty dem dey run for that school. Two politician friends of mine told me when they got admission to that school to study law and guess what? Like a blink of the eye, they were done. These were people globetrotting during the three year program. I just kept the thought to myself that time only to see this ban.

I was discussing with a colleague about accreditation in the Nigerian system just two days back. The biggest culprits are government owned universities. This colleague of mine served in a university and when it was time for accreditation in the computer science and mathematics department, he was given a tag of a lecturer and given an office. The real HOD was reduced to lecturer 1 and a lecturer was sourced from Kebbi University who had masters and coren to stand as HOD. They went into town and borrowed computers, meters etc and put them in the labs. My point is govt owned schools are more complicit especially in the North and East when it comes to accreditation. So while this ban is handy and desirable, it should be extended all round else it becomes witch-hunt
