larride:It is a pity that some states can't pay the current 30k minimum wage, when even a POS vendor pays around 30k monthly for an attendant. If a state cannot pay a living minimum wage, let the state look for solutions. If the state is too lazy to look for solutions, it may lay off workers. Workers should begin to think out of the box and become employers of labour too instead of earning a paltry minimum wage that cannot even take care of a new born baby. 2 Likes 1 Share |

GrammarNazi1: There are multiple issues with state employment Most state workers have always been under employed. There are multiple ghost worker scams A lot of state workers are not even qualified to start with. Most state workers do not make their money from that job. |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by GrammarNazi1(m): 9:55am On Jun 03 |
GloriousGbola:Definitely, but these are problems or challenges that states should resolve. The truth is the 30k minimum wage is too small in today's Nigeria; it is so small that it can't even take care of a new born baby in a month. 2 Likes |

Itsrm: Wow! Just wow! The man is very very sound , articulate and well informed. He broke everything down referring to historical records and how the management of this country has been dysfunctional in modern day Nigeria. I like how he explained how labour is chasing the wrong struggle while the government is throwing money at non-money problems . The only solution to the problem as the man posited in the video is for the government to adopt a welfarist approach to governance. Let the worker be able to spend as little as 30% of his income on housing, transport, healthcare and other physiological needs and u won't see labour coming out every year to demand increase in minimum wage. It is shocking that when the minimum wage was increased to 18k in 2011, the minimum wage could buy 3 bags of rice but today the current minimum wage can only buy half bag of rice. If Nigeria will ever be good again, we need to go back to the drawing board as the man posited in the last part of his interview. Let whoever wants to run for president or state governor come up with the workable plans he has about building low cost estates, workable plans on affordable healthcare, workable plans on affordable transport, etc. Not just everybody focusing on political jamborees during elections only to get the seat and start taxing the dead and living to finance expensive lifestyle of execuTHIEVES and legisLOOTERS. |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by GloriousGbola: 10:18am On Jun 03 |
BlueRayDick: Welfarist approach where you spend 30% of your income? That is what brought us here. Subsidies that never worked and became a millstone once we had cash flow issues This is what the military did for years to legitimize their rule and it is why Nigerians have been conditioned to expect that numerous services may as well be free 2 Likes |

BlueRayDick: Very sound points. Infact, anyone whose salary has increased within the last 5 years will easily relate with it. The problem is not necessarily increase of wages. The problem is the purchasing power of the money. I have said it here that my colleagues unanimously agree that they prefer the salary we were earning around 2018. Even though lower than what we earn now, it was more than enough for us. |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by Itsrm(m): 10:32am On Jun 03 |
GloriousGbola: Did you watch the interview? His point is that the money is still available to use, the government is just using it wrongly doing things like conditional cash transfer e.t.c |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by larride(m): 10:34am On Jun 03 |
BlueRayDick: Sounds very good on paper but all these are all medium/long term approach/plans. Right now, the government must increase the minimum wage and fast. 3 Likes |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 10:34am On Jun 03 |
GloriousGbola: U need to watch the video first. The man started with the fact that the reason why labour keep agitating for increase in minimum wage is because of the weak purchasing power of naira. The issue is a macroeconomic problem which FG and labour are trying to solve with microeconomic solutions which won't work. U need to check the Nigeria's constitution and what it says about the function of government. It says "the government must direct its policy towards ensuring that suitable and adequate shelter, suitable and adequate food, reasonable national minimum living wage, old age care and pensions, and unemployment, sick benefits and welfare of the disabled are provided for all citizens." Is that too much to ask ? If yes, then maybe they should just scrap the constitution then because that is what the constitution mandates a government to do |

Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 10:39am On Jun 03 |
Itsrm: I was still having this same discussion with a friend yesterday. 2015-2016, what u would buy with meagre salary and still have savings, u can't even buy them with much higher salary after several promotions/increase in income. Increasing the minimum wage to 100k will not solve anything as of today, it will only lead to an increase in the inflation rate. If the government can't find a way to bring some form of subsidy to cushion the effect of subsidy removal that was done inappropriately, we will only be going around in circles. 1 Like |

GrammarNazi1: Well it's easy to say lay off workers until a Governor start it and you will see the kind of scandal and uproar it will cause. I do agree that states must think out the box and find a way to create solution for their states but some states are largely civil servant states. Examples are Osun and Ekiti that I mentioned earlier. For Osun, the civil service salary takes almost 80% of the state FAAC every month, after paying the salaries what will remain for the other citizens that ain't civil servants? That's why states like Osun politics are basically dictated by civil servants. In a sane nation with the kind of federation we claim to be running, each state should be maintaining their own minimum wage within their capacity. 100k in Ekiti or Osun is not the same 100k in Lagos or Abuja. The purchasing power of both state differs. 3 Likes |

Omo.. Today will be a madhouse for alot of people. I'm gearing local flight isn't working. But isn't turning off the power grid an economic Sabotage? Aren't some things meant to be off limits? But knowing the FG, na this kind madness them go finally respond to when the suppose Don sort out labour since |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 10:47am On Jun 03 |
larride: U need to watch the video. The man used historical events to buttress his point that the increase in minimum wage won't do much. He mentioned how the Udoji grant was made available to civil servants and everybody went to the market to buy bicycle which was the preferred means of transportation and suddenly the price of bicycles jumped over the roof in an instant. He mentioned how the Chinese government instead provided bicycles for civil servants instead of leaving the cash with the civil servants to drive inflation figures up. Well, maybe u are right that increase in minimum wage will be a short term approach, but it's effect won't last so long at all |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by larride(m): 10:49am On Jun 03 |
BlueRayDick: It will not solve all the problems but it will still make people lives a bit easier why labor can continue holding govt by the trouser to bring inflation down and stabilize the economy. Workers need to at least be able to survive for now. Survival is the first thing. Everything has increased x5 but wages has stagnated, how do you want to survive in this situation? How long will it take to bring inflation down, how long will it take to build affordable housing and the likes. |

larride:Did it collapse again? |
Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by larride(m): 10:52am On Jun 03 |
BlueRayDick: But what's already happening is the reverse of what the man is saying. Prices of things has already jumped over the roof, increasing minimum wage is just to give workers a little breathing space to be able to cope and survive. |

Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by larride(m): 10:55am On Jun 03 |
sod09: What I heard was that it collapsed oo. If they indeed put off the power grid, those that did it should be found and tried for treason. Power grid are critical essential infrastructure. It's only in Nigeria that Nigerians will say they are going on strike and then begin to suffer those they said they are striking for. 3 Likes |

Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by BlueRayDick: 10:56am On Jun 03 |
larride: What the man is saying is that things will get worse because FG has not tackled the root cause of the inflation but attempting to throw money at non-money problem. For example now pepper is very very expensive. If minimum wage is increased and everybody has enough money at hand, the sellers of pepper will further jack up their prices because we now have so much cash chasing limited supply of pepper |

sod09: larride: Unfortunately that is the only way u can get government to listen in this country. If u don't attempt to or actually carry out economic sabotage, the government won't take u serious. Did it not take Niger Delta militants to start vandalizing pipelines before FG thought of their plight in that area? 1 Like |
