APC is fit for playing politics and not for governance.

Politics of a 3rd world country, I agree. They will not survive in a real democracy

See ehn, there are better ways of doing the job of a government's spokesperson. It doesn't necessarily need to be about u going combative with the other party.

NLC and TUC are labour unions ; Like them or hate them, their existence is guaranteed by labor laws and u will always have to deal with them on workers welfare. There's no need to start making it seem like u are ready to spar with them in a combat.

A spokesperson to government should be telling a story that the government is trying its best to have the grievances of the workers addressed. Simple! This is not a time to be playing politics since we all agreed the government cannot afford to allow the strike to linger too long.

Are you just knowing Bayo Onanuga? grin

I'm surprised you are surprised by his statement. What he is doing is what he is paid to do.

I'm not asking labor to drive any policy on inflation or anything.

If you go back to the genesis of the argument it's a video interview of a man on channels. My argument is that Labor must insist on the govt increasing minimum wage for the survival of the citizens while they can now continue to pressure the government to work to reduce inflation, provide affordable housing and all. Those are medium/long term solution.

Workers need instant solution to be able to survive which is increasing minimum wage.
APC has no concrete plans for workers' welfare, so what is labor supposed to put pressure on FG on when there's little that has been even suggested by FG as regards their long-term plans for worker's welfare?

Yea, I agree that the wages of workers need be increased, cause I don't see what APC wants to do even in Tinubu's remaining 3 years that will make any significant change, any reactive government will take this strike as cue to begin working on long-term solutions.

This particular situation, I expected baba to be lending his voice to add pressure for demands to be met.

So that they'll say Peter Obi instigated strike to bring the government down.

The more reason why I believe he's too hot-headed to be a government's official spokesperson. He doesn't address issues but dwells so much on politics.

He's at best fit for a political party's spokesperson; a person in which he can attack any opposition party he so pleases. A government's official spokesperson should be cool headed, if possible a public relation expert and not necessarily a journalist who became a poltician

I really don't know what is wrong with those people. They are doing as if when labour eventually gets to negotiate something better for the works it won't affect their own members whom they claim to be speaking for.

At least of they don't have anything reasonable to contribute at this moment, they should just shut up angry
That's why they are useless
They are never contributed anything positive in the country
All they do is gaslight, condemn and spread hate

Omo , I just understood the Heritage wahala now. I just read that last year their head of IT diverted 49 billion into third party account and disappeared ; even at a time the bank was having issues with its Capital Adequacy Ratio.

That bank had died a long time ago

So what happens to the civil service if all workers quit and go into business? Are their no govt workers in foreign countries?

A political union is making outrageous demands and yet people are supporting them just out of spite for the government of the day.

Politics should always follow economics but looks like it is otherwise and people are just being played to the gallery.

Under what Iterations can the revenue of the country sustain those silly numbers. An extremely poor country by every economic, fiscal and revenue metric

People should readily make sacrifices but one which is worthy. Not being used to further some barbed agenda.

APPEAL TO ORGANISED LABOUR, BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OF NIGERIA

This is a heartfelt and deeply considered appeal to the Labour Unions to continue along the path of negotiations with the Federal and State Governments, under the auspices of the Tripartite Committee that has been established to fashion out a new, realistic minimum wage for the Nigerian people.

As Government, we are desirous of a peaceful outcome, and we will do everything to make this happen. Yesterday, the leadership of the National Assembly met with the Unions. Today, we have offered another invitation to the Unions, to meet with us and continue our discussions.

We will continue to engage, and continue to make ourselves very available in the context of these negotiations on behalf of the Nigerian people

Let me make it clear that we are not opponents on this negotiating table. We are united by the fact that we want the best for the Federal Republic of Nigeria and for all 200 million citizens of the country.

We have a responsibility to strike a measured and realistic balance, in this effort to arrive at a new minimum wage for Nigerians.

Let us remind ourselves of the fundamental facts:

The minimum wage is not only for public sector workers. It will be binding on the private sector as well. This reality must be factored into the negotiations.

As I have explained earlier, Labour’s current proposal of N494,000 is an increase of 1,547 percent on the existing wage, and translates into an annual wage bill of 9.5 Trillion Naira for the Federal Government of Nigeria alone.

This is apart from its cost implications for subnational governments and private sector employees. Such a wage bill would cripple the Nigerian economy, by leading to massive job losses especially in the private sector.

The National Consumer Credit Scheme and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) are additional significant demonstrations of a determination to bring relief to the people of Nigeria.

We want the Labour Unions to understand that the relief that Nigerians are expecting, and that they fully deserve, will not come only in the form of increased wages. It will also come as efforts to reduce the cost of living, and to ensure that more money stays in the pockets of Nigerians.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) is firmly committed to doing what is right, reasonable and sustainable regarding these minimum wage negotiations. We call on the Labour Unions to reciprocate this gesture in the interest of the nation.

I thank you for listening.

This one still makes sense than the nonsense Bayo Onanuga was spouting earlier .

As per the bolded , while they are highlighting the labour union’s demand is 1,500% increment from the current minimum wage ; they should do well to tell us the percentage increase in general inflation rate , the percentage increase in fuel price , the percentage increase in electricity cost , the percentage increase in food inflation , etc .

As regards the over 400k demand of the labour unions , every reasonable person knows it is only normal for labour to start with a higher figure before they negotiate downwards to a middle ground . Nobody expects that amount to be what the labour will insist on.
