Your people's penchant to look away even when truth stares them in the face is legendary.

Look at how you excused Zik from the blame. Zik ought to have argued in favour of secession like Awolowo, but he probably thought his people would succeed in lording over other tribes. Sadly, the opposite is the case today.

If Zik had supported secession clause, that would have been two against one. His people won't be screaming Biafra or death today and begging to secede. So you see, Awolowo was a visioneer, he saw today from yesterday.

It's sad that you now want Awolowo to commit a treasonable offense like Ojukwu after the latter's brother Zik supported the law that placed secessionist tendencies as treason.

The moment you fail to acknowledge the truth, no matter how bitter, you will start to make horrible decisions. That's what is wrong with your people.

The problem with them is they always twist the truth to suit their agenda....they tell so many lies that they start to believe lies are truth....they have consistently refused to tell themselves the truth but choose to blame their folly and mistakes on anyone but themselves.....Azikiwe has been shown to be a very unstable character but on this thread you see many of them excusing him for their current woes but instead choose to blame Azikiwes unstable choice on Awolowo.......lol grin

You guys are missing the point. That constitution, no matter what it contained or could have contained was thrown out so that it would have mattered if it contained secession clause.

Ok, it contained resource control for the regions. Are we doing resource control today?
BlowYourMind:
If zik was wise and had foresight, he would have opposed the removal of secession, but he is blind to the future, he want to be premier in the south west.

If the military did not intervene and the secession clause was there, the country would have broken up long ago
seanfer:

Who opposed the inclusion of secession in our constitution? NNAMDI AZIKIWE. Without him opposing it, we won't be where we are today and the civil war pf 1967 would have been avoidable.

Zik was a statesman.

Azikiwe was a very unstable politician whose ideology changed with each day.....NCNC.....Biafra......NPP......
He stole NCNC from Herbert Macaulay.......in Biafra he initially supported Ojukwu but midway through the war jumped ship and declared support for Gowon and Nigeria......He stole the Nigeria people's party (NPP) from Waziri Ibrahim who had to abandon the party for him to go and form Great Nigeria people's party(GNPP).

Nope, its the Yorubas that are going with the Hausas even when its unreasonable. Igbos went with Obj and it was successful. Igbos went with Yaradua and GEJ, it was successful. Yorubas went with Buhari, it was unsuccessful. They went with Tinubu and its been a disaster
ElSudani:

The problem with zik is similar to what we experience with Ibos today. They always want to go the opposite way on everything with Yoruba, whether it is in their interest or not is secondary.

Where was Amadu Bello in this argument?

When Biafra left, why didnt Awolowo leave instead of looking for secession clause?
TimeManager:

Read the article very well or go get the full speech of Azikiwe against secession clause. Zik clearly argued that any attempt to divide the union by secession was treasonable. He argued that Nigeria is an indivisible and indisoluble union. Impliedly, Zik was appealing to the British monarchy to arrest and jail Awolowo for supporting the inclusion of secession clause.

This is 2024, not 1954. Zik has long been dead. We don't need to be together, we can always go our seperate ways and return as we were before the British came to bring us together in their disastrous colonial project called Nigeria . I don't even know some people want Nigeria to continue, all the country has achieved since creation is fighting, poverty and suffering

Again, if the constitution was abrogated by the military, does it matter what it contained?

That means zik is far far bigger than Awolowo and Amadu Bello
TimeManager:
1957 London constitutional conference, Nigerian representatives across party lines and regions were invited to have an input in the drafting of the independence constitution. Zik took it personally, beyond debate and conviction but calling on the british authority to arrest anyone who speaks for secession, he called it a treason and we all know what that means to ask that people be indicted for treason. It was a capital punishment. Zik was the architect of a dyfunctional foundation of the country.

I bet you don't remember the election in which there wasn't a clear majority and any two of the three main parties could have formed an alliance and then form the government. Awolowo offered Zik the position of Prime minister so their parties could form the government.
What did Zik do? He made an appointment with Awo while he was in the north signing an agreement with the Northern People's Congress to take a ceremonial position of President.
If this is not absurd and unreasonable to you then nothing is.

The way you people reason ehn. You guys never want to admit you are wrong for once. To you, it means you are a loser.

You said Nigeria is chaotic today. Awolowo saw that and prescribed a means to avoid it, which was a secession clause. Sadly, the Zik you are praising today was myopic and should be blamed for the chaos in Nigeria today.

You people lack visionary leaders and it's all because you deny the truth. You are even ready to attack whoever tells the truth among you . Same way you guys say there's no hunger in your region and pounced on Cubana Chief Priest for telling the truth.

Then tell your governors, assembly men, senators, ministers and house of reps members to pass a bill seeking an amendment to the constitution to insert a referendum clause....that is the first step and not violence, and terrorism....but we know you will never do this because you want to have your cake and eat it too......lol....you want Biafra but you want Nigeria more.. ... grin

Yorubas did not look on but connived with the North. Imagine Awolowo suggesting food blockade to keep Biafra from going instead of him using the opportunity to put Yorubas out
flokii:
Nnamdi Azikiwe opposed secession clause in our constitution in the early days because he thought Nigeria in its entirety will fall under Igbo domination.. he has several quotes about some gods giving Igbos dominance over Nigeria credited to him. Let them not deceive you that they wanted regionalism or federalism and whatnot.
Ahmadu Bello pointed it out clearly in his interview that Igbos took over all the Governmemt jobs in the North and he changed everything to ensure Northerners get jobs in their region. That made him introduce the " Northerner first" policy which has favoured Northerners till date.

That is why it's always good to think deeply before acting.. they orchestrated first blo0dy coup d'etat on 15 January, 1966 but Northerners fought back and took power for themselves while docile Yorubas looked on.

Give me an example of stable politician like you don’t even understand what being a politician is, a politician is supposed to be a man of the people, since people are unstable, politicians are fluid. People may want rice tiday, but if they keep eating rice they are going to get tired and want fufu, stable politician keeps believing in fufu and that’s not a great politician

Why was resource control not made in subsequent constitutions going by your logic?

Awolowo tried to have the clause in the constitution but zik opposed it.

If zik had agree to it maybe an ACT or provisions would have been made for it in subsequent constitution.

I suspect he thought the 1960 constitution gave same powers to the governor General like the 1954 constitution.
This is more reinforced by the fact he did not know he had no control over the military until 1965!!
