most 7.5kva generator will take 7k fuel for 24hrs daily. Now you will have to add the cost of the noise, the cost of the maintenance and the best part of it, the generator even with best servicing history can decide one night not to start. You will have to wait until the next day to get a mechanic.

Start your journey with the available 2ml and keep increasing the batteries and panels as days go by. You will get off the grid in no time

I don't have solar (yet) I cannot use 5ml on generator at all. I will rather use it to set up solar and budget a six months upgrade until I get what I want.

Last year,a friend of mine went off grid in Enugu. Like completely for a little over 4ml. It was a DIY project

That must be a typo, do you mean to say 70k? Cos 7k fuel will amount to nothing

50k on petrol monthly Maybe you are putting on the gen for just 30 or 45minutes

Mind you, there is already solar. So you don't have to run the genset flat out.

a heavy one. I meant to say 6-8 hours. From 8pm to 4am

Solar only makes good sense if one can get to off grid stage. Here resides the problem. The cost is so prohibitive that it is out of reach to majority of Nigerians.

Mind you, about 90% of Nigerians living in urban areas are renters. And about half (or less) of Nigerians living in rural areas and villages own their own homes. For these demographics, off grid is not feasible.

This is why a hybrid system comes highly recommended. A well managed 2M hybrid system with 50k monthly outlay can guarantee more than 15 hours access to power per day.

This one no be hear say. My brother is using only solar in his hospital. The whole 2 storey building, and has been off grid ever since. 24 hours electricity with ac, water pump, fridges and all tvs . The system has 45 solar panels.
When most of the appliances are on, it say only 25% usage, meaning he can even add more load. 15kva total. Cost more than #10M.

This is what we're talking about. On an industrial scale, solar is spot on. The hospital will pay for it.

Spending onwards of 15M on electricity for an average family home does not make any economic sense.

This is one problem am having with the solar discussion, i am yet to get any reviews and feedback from those actually using it, rather what we read is “my friend” “my neighbor” “the one i installed last month for a client”. I have a neighbor across my fence with over 12 panels and the security lights are so dimmed that a candle is even brighter. I am yet to see a company that runs on solar, i was driving by a filling station the other day with over 12panels on their roof yet the generator sound was as loud so what were the panels installed for?

Maybe in the nearest future solar will become better but now its a waste of funds.

If am to spend 7m on something i expect my Ac, water pump, Tv, washing machine and mico wave to be working because that is what i use my generator for. Don’t tell me to install a solar and you now go around to give me a list of what i should not use while on solar. Just a small mini rechargeable fan you asking me to turn of my light bulbs after spending 7m abeg make it make sense.

I don't think you live in this same Naija wey we dey so. Or maybe you haven't bought fuel for quite a while now.

A 7.5kva gen has a 25L fuel tank and a full tank can run non-stop for only about 12hrs. In today's economy, that 55k you mentioned can get you just about 70L of fuel, which translates to about 3 full tanks on that 7.5kva gen, hence you'd only be able to run the gen for just 3 x 12hrs (1 and half days, if run continuously).

Get an inverter generator. The science is, an inverter generator of the same capacity you evidenced will run 75% longer than your normal generator as it will use less fuel. Inverter consumes fuel according to the load. Less load, minimal fuel consumption.

So if you have a situation where your appliances like energy saving bulbs, TV run on solar, but only your fridge, occasional A/C and washing machine run on inverter, a 25L fuel can go well more than a week.

For a homeowner with an average family, a hybrid system just like a hybrid car, is the best energy solution with a solar budget of 2M.

My own wey dey up there nko?

Oga, go to solar thread u will understand better. I didn't even spend up 200k to go almost off-grid. (Roughly 2 yrs ago)

Most installers you are close to still use lead acid batteries (tubular nonsense).

If u touch lithium u will confess. This is called better money well spent.

Who dey spend 7m for just basic appliances?
Your exaggeration too plenty sef.

Nigerians can be funny sha, so jpumping machine, water is my primary need for electricity before i start talking of refrigerator then AC, charging my phone is the last thing i will want to install a solar inverter for.

So those of you coming to my WhatsApp to bomb me with threats coz am spoiling your business, stop wasting your time abeg. These solar guys are cashing out fast because they will give a false hope that your electricity problems are solved only for you to finally done with the installation and they start giving you rules and regulations on how Samsung ac is not good for solar but panasonic ACs are good. I have had clients who spent millions on that and later regretted it. Lol

Bro, you install solar based on your energy needs. All home appliances can be powered by solar. The people you speak of, were probably scamed by the solar vendors or installers. You can budget above 5m for solar and not opt for lithium ba3.
If you can afford BYD lithium ba3. It can power all your Home energy needs smoothly

Haha they ve start the attacks once again. Is solar a temporary backup yes but deceiving your clients into spending over 10m on something that still won’t take them off grid and they would need to replace batteries every 18months is fraud.

Pls go for Lithium battery, any installer still telling you to use lead acid is no doing you any favour. I have just a 60Ah locally built lifepo4 battery and it's over 3 years now without noticing anything drop in its efficiency. So, a good lifepo4 battery will have a life span of nothing less than 8 years

I've been off grid for a couple years and now use it with phcn power after connection of prepaid meter.
The capacity of the inverter, number of solar panel determines what appliance you want to use. With required number of solar panel with high wattage and say 10kva inverter, solar would power the A.C, pumping machine and freezer conveniently during the day while there is sun. It would still charge the battery simultaneously.
After sun down, I don't think batteries can power heavy appliances for long duration. The battery would have to be excessively much.
To get more of the battery at night, led light, TV and 10 watt standing fan is used.
Even when the battery is weak, you will use any appliance within the capacity of the inverter and solar panel during the day as it uses the battery as just a portal that charges pass through then.
The day time usage alone is a big savings on the long run.

A genuine 6.5KWh LiFePO4 battery is just under 3million. Never mind the 15KWh they write on the body of some batteries. This is not true.

One will need about a genuine 15KWh to have any descent power supply and we will be into the 6million range for batteries alone.

For me, this is where everything breaks down value for money wise. A 20M off grid solar set up for a residential home is not good value for money from my perspective.

My personal experience.
I had a 3.5Kva solar system set up by SolarEdge (he is on nairaland) in Jan 2023.
2 Luminous 220A batteries and 4 300w panels.
It cost me roughly about 1.4/1.5m.
I use it alongside govt electricity which can be epileptic 50% of the time.
Pros.
When there is a long time power outage eg vandalization or downtime.
1. I run the freezer from 9am to 4pm.
2. I can wash during that time.
3. TV and fans are always on
4. I am on postpaid metering and my bills reduced by about 20 to 30% or so.

Cons.
1. I rarely iron with it even with high sunlight
2. I can't pump with it.

Interestingly in this over 18months I have bought not more than 10 liters of fuel for emergency pumping and ironing.

I have been very happy with this set up and only hope to add 2 more batteries to tap mlre sunlight during raining season.

Just assume the inverter is your generator set. Do you think 3.5 kva generator can power a pumping machine or electric iron conveniently.
You may need to increase the solar panel and inverter capacity to do so.
Your 1200 watt panels won't charge 4 batteries efficiently. It would still be at the same level of the 2 batteries or 3 batteries distributed in 4 batteries. I use similar set up as yours but 2080 watts panels. It's really the panels that supply the main power and the higher the capacity, the more the capacity of the inverter at the appropriate kva.

Oga at a point its about what you deserve not so much about the value for money. If you have the money spend it on your life’s comfort unless those wey no know how hard you worked will get to squander am.

If you are making financial/commercial decisions then value for money comes to play.

For Nigeria if you know how liberating being able to go off grid is eh you go see yourself dancing without music when you go by those long queues at petrol stations.

I have a 3.5KW inverter and can Pump flawless with 24V 200AH lithium ion phosphate batteries, equivalent to his 2 tubular batteries, But has more energy Density and higher Current Deliver up to 1C..

Lithium batteries have changed the game in renewable energy.. a small 12V 200AH can power Iron because the batteries can deliver up to 1200w continuous without stress.

Also I have been using mine for 3 years plus with little degration.
