Why You Should Do Your Research Really Hard Before You Japa Os Relocate Abroad by Papilagreen: 8:31pm On Jun 11
Okay here we go...

First of all I want to apologize ahead of time just in case you see a typo please just ignore it because I know you will understand what am trying to say just in case because I am human and not AI that does things to almost perfection.

Okay so before you japa or relocate to any other country please and please do your research real good before you dive in.

I will say this because I was very guilty of it. The problem with our typical Nigerian man is that we hate to read and study more to get more info. Instead, we all go by the words of people and what we see on social media.
I am here to tell you that the that not all that glitter is gold.
Yes you will see our people the moment they relocate abroad they take pictures ND post online we the ignorant people back home when we see the environment where the pictures are taken we fell they are in the promise land.l but they are not.
I will advise you if you have relatives abroad be it the USA, Canada, UK, Germany etc. its not easy i know what am talking about.
One advice I will give to us Nigerians is stop the money conversion YES! Stop it.

Now before I go any further let me explain. Even if you make 2000 pound or 2000 Dollars every paycheck my brother you are suffering.

See to sum it up right. Let me use my self as a case study. I have traveled to different countries , From UK to France and now i live in America where i am a legal resident i don have to be fraid of deportation or what not.

Firstly before you relocate please and please first make sure you have a very good professional skills. I am not talking about your university degree I am talking about something marketable. Be it taloring, hair dressing, mechanic any job at all heck even plumbing or electrical too abeg learn

Secondly the living system abroad is a whole ball game. You are new to a whole different culture. In Nigeria, things are so very very cheap but nobody will agree with me. So let me explain a little as I can for you.
And before I say bills, somebody will come and say what is the bills you people pay abroad that we in Nigeria don't pay. And I am here to say alot of bills plenty bills even your papa no pay before.
In Nigeria you can not pay your nepa bill and still have light one way or the other
Abroad, you don't if you don't pay, you lose your privileges and what are those bills, let me tell you.

For example here we go.
I will be using myself as a case study so here is a few of the main bills I pay monthly I don't miss
1 house rent : $1345 per month
2, electricity :$120 per month
3, phone bill 3 phones me myself and my first daughter totalling $120 per month
4, car insurance I have 3 cars but I drive two because nobody drives the third $180 per month.
5, internet fee $45 per month.
Food and drinks $800 minimum I spend for 4people that doesn't include eating outside not even a fancy restaurant just normal fast food if I include that then I should be running up to $1100 per month if am correct.

This are the min expenses monthly. I haven't included health insurance and other emergency expenses.
Last month my send child fell a little sick I went to the hospital and after just minor examination by the doctor, we were given pain medicine and some flu medication the next week, my hospital bill came ND it totalled $2113 I wan shout.

Now I haven't talked about the fuel I buy to drive around and other expenses ooo.

Now have it in mind that we in America nobody will tell you this but I will now. And I want somebody to prove me wrong in America and the UK, the citizens 15 people out of 100 are the ones that go to school. When I mean school I mean the university i.e bachelor's and masters degree. They don't go to school only the wealthy go to school here those who were born into money or the one that decides that he or shill will go take out student loans to go to school. Na we wain japa come here dey go school.its not that they don't want to its because it is very expensive and they can't afford it. A typical American citizen doesn't have up to $4000 saved u as emergency funds it's very hard to come by. I am not saying they are not but it's rear. ( Ask me why and it will be a while new topic for another day)
Na only abroad somebody can be kicked out of their house at anytime and they be one homeless.
I know a lot of people American (oyinbo) who are homeless and get they still work they sleep in their cars t the parking lot at Walmart or any super shopping center at night and in the morning, the just brush clean their self with baby or body wipes face, armpits under leg and off to work. Why you ask me? Well because they can't afford to pay their rent and bills and eat at same time.

You might think this is funny but it's not it's the fact. Na who neva go no go know.
I'm summary you have to be working two or 3 jobs to be able to make ends meet to survive. Na only yanki you go dey work pay rent for house where you don't spend up to 4 hours living in that house daily.
Forget that word say u dey come here come hustle hard people dey wain hustle pass you here take it or leave it I see it everyday.

Infact the American living here are complaining. I know some people will say tax is used for good roads and electric etc. baba that's cap. I have lived here enough to know otherwise. Ask a sain American who is 85 % saintient of his or her environment, and they will tell you that the greatest scam system ever created in America, is the taxation system Americans cry because of taxes they pay always yet somebody who hasn't left the shores of Nigeria or should I say JJC or person eain no a spend up to 3 years abroad will argue with me. That's why I will always say who no go no go know.

I will tell you something today yes, there is dignity in hard work, and hard work pays off in the long run but believe me in America where I dey sometimes the case is different.

Finally, I will end this not with this if you have the opportunity to japa please japa it's worth it even if it's just the travel experience it's worth it on the long run BUT, never ever try and relocate abroad without proper plans e.g accomodation mostly accomodation make sure you well prep to where you will be staying when you come or else you will regret mostly when it's the winter time. See your relatives and friends abroad go fail you. Once you tell them say you don land 80% of them will leave you hanging at the airport because them know what's up and you win just come don't know shit so wise up make sure you set before you japa.
Also abeg no sell your property japa make sure it's not you last resort to sell you property japa because you might end up regretting it.
Those people wain dey tell you say japa say in less than 6 months to a year you go be permanent resident most especially those trave agents abeg avoid them.
Finally I will leave you with this last advice. You bring a black man in a white man's country, just know say your one simple honest mistake is equivalent to a white man's 100 mistakes you will be judged differently.
Abroad no be by hard work dem dey take survive here na wisdom ND since. In Chicago Illinois alone I know this for sure because I have been there. We have many africans who just came into the country not up to 3 years and they are already in jail serving long term because of crime and fraud in the name of I must blow. No be their fault na the movies dem dey watch for Nigeria about yanki and when they came here, they found out the other way. I have a friend I will call him ola just for this sake. Ola dey prison serving 7 years for Internet fraud aka aza man.
After his arrest he called his mom from prison telling her that he now works offshore for an oil company and they don't use phone there always so he calls her when he is allowed to use the phone for call which is limited to the inmate In there the mama dey Nigeria dey brave her pikin set work offshore the mama no know and I can't tell her because such news can never come from me to her.
So abeg my people always know that it's not always bright at the other end of the tunnel abeg wise up.
Before you relocate try improve on a good marketable skill or skills make u no go dey left behind.

Thanks for the info. However, with a made-up mind, all obstacles will be taken care of. Apart from the jail part that's scary, which one needs to be extra careful the rest can be coped with.

shame on you to allow yourself to be used as a tool to spread propanganda and lies. an average homeless man on the street in Us is better than an average man in nigeria yet you claim everything is cheaper in nigeria. big shame on you!

you even said you can get ight in nigeria without paying.

in case you dont know we pay more for light than those in texas where minimum wage is 2.1 million. and rice is more expensive in nigeria than in the uk. (check images below)
i pray they deport you in the us. so you will come back and suffer here. mumu.

if you get money to japa, run without looking back ooo. dont let this idiot decieve you. he has 3 cars in the US and he's telling you that life is hard there...

Na why I say person like you no fit succeed in life no offense but it's just the normal truth. To it. People like you never succeed in life and all you do is blame other people for it
You see the word mental slavery, you are the perfect definition of mental slavery. Your chin shackles are not physical. You have been enslaved till your last days on earth.

With that said I see no reason to further communicate with you on any ground of so ever. Like I said to you before, NA PERSON LIKE YOU AN INNOCENT MAN WILL CALL A FRIEND GO ASK YOU ABEG HELP ME WATCH MY DRINK MAKE I GO PISS, AND YOU GO POISON THE DRINK BECAUSE WHEN YOU SEE THE PERSON WAIN DEY SUCCEED AND YOU DAY LEFT BEHIND YOU GO KILL THAT PERSON. I am 100% certain for a fact YOU will do it.

Bro make I hint u small. I can never be poor or mentally ill like you are till the day I die.
To me I just feel you didn't go to school at all or even at that if you go school your parents just wasted their money to send you to school because if you read my post well you will get the point of my story. All I advise was for you to not come to another man's country ND think all is well because you watch it on TV. I advised to learn a skill before you leave if possible but here you are saying trash because YOU CANT READ. You are too slow for my liking. People like you travel to somewhere like meric or other places with high hopes are the type that never make it in life home or abroad prove me wrong
Person like you no even fit boast of 300k for your bank account I am very positive about it.
I am in my 30s bro and I am here to tell you boadly that I made my first.1 million at age 17.
I was already smarter that your whole family combined when it comes to IQ at that age (17).
Honestly from all you have written here I see nothing but a failure if I am to put it that way. I bet u still drag food with your younger ones at home.

My last advice to you before I pen down, is go and learn how to read and read more book that way you will broden your mind and maybe make a better life out of yourself boi.

That's like 180$ here which I can make in a day or two with no hassle all thanks to the hady work i learned before I left Nigeria.
Make I help be source of provider for you family since you are useless to help.
My offer stands bro 100% legit for sure.

They are some wisdom in you posting. However, you made the who thing scary than it is. I agree with you we all need to plan and be diligent in our relocation plans.
Your major point is that things are very expensive here in the US. That is the truth. However, if you are in Nigeria and you don't have a job, how can you afford what is cheap? Majority of the people that comes to this country and regret are those that thinks they will be earning America dollar and their cost of living will be as cheap as they are in Nigeria and those that want to blow before they leave the airport.

Yes, there are homeless people in America. no one that is hard working and ready to work is going to be homeless whether you have paper or not. There is always work for you to do as long as you are not choosy.

Americans complain about taxes but they can see what their taxes is been used for. You drive on good road, send your children to free school. Get treated at the hospital for free if you don't have money to pay. Yes, I repeat you get treated in the hospital free if you don't have money to pay. You must pay if you have the money after you have been treated. it is not Naija where you can lied and hide your money.

It is not true that only children of the rich that goes to university in America. If you are poor, you will get financial Aid and yes education is very expensive. Even in Nigeria quality education is very expensive. American do go to school. If you go to any university classroom, no matter the number of immigrants in the class, more than 50% will still be Americans in majority of cases. Of course there are significant number of the population that did not have university education just like any other countries in the world.

As for prison, America is not Nigeria, they don't settle case at the police stations. If you commit crime, you will go to jail. No excuses.

From the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness:

While employment helps people stay housed, it does not guarantee housing. As many as 40%-60% of people experiencing homelessness have a job, but housing is unaffordable because wages have not kept up with rising rents. There is no county or state where a full-time minimum-wage worker can afford a modest apartment. At minimum wage, people have to work 86 hours a week to afford a one-bedroom. Even when people can afford a home, one is not always available. In 1970, the United States had a surplus of 300,000 affordable homes. Today, only 37 affordable homes are available for every 100 extremely low-income renters. As a result, 70% of the lowest-wage households spend more than half their income on rent, placing them at high risk of homelessness when unexpected expenses (such as car repairs and medical bills) arise.

There is a lot of complexity in that statistics that is important and useful for policy makers that is not applicable in the context of our discussion here.
My comment you quoted states that if you are hard working and willing to work.

You referenced the document that says 86 hrs of work at minimum wage is required to afford one bedroom. This means if you and your spouse is working regular 80 hours per week and extra 6 hrs( less than the number of hours you will waste in traffic every week in Lagos smiley), you will be able to afford one bedroom. if you and your spouse don't have children, you can get roommate, If you don't have spouse you can get two roommates. You can then work yourself up to the point you can be able to buy your own house. That is how a lot of people do it here? You are not coming to be stuck on minimum wage.

The discussion here is regarding Nigerian coming to US. In Nigeria if you are earning triple the minimum wage, can you afford one bedroom, pay other expenses and still be able to feed yourself?

Please don't misunderstand me. I am not saying America is a paradise. It is not. However, it is a land of opportunity for those willing to work hard and face the challenges it poses.

You're assuming that work is always there for those who want it, and that those who are able to get it will always have it.

you can get roommate, If you don't have spouse you can get two roommates. You can then work yourself up to the point you can be able to buy your own house. That is how a lot of people do it here?

Again, you're assuming an always accessible, reliable supply.

You are not coming to be stuck on minimum wage.

My friend, you have a lot to learn about America.

He's correct.

Despite the wealth of America, much of it is deliberately designed to not be accessible. Where transportation infrastructure should exist (especially given the taxes paid), Americans are forced to eat those costs at higher and higher rates. Car prices have soared in recent years, and even affordable used cars are disappearing from the market. Furthermore, there's even a racist aspect to costs because anyone in a zip code with a large black population pays substantially more for insurance (typically almost double).

They are some wisdom in you posting. However, you made the who thing scary than it is. I agree with 't have money to pay.

No excuses.

The rest of OP's post sounds like good advice, but the bold is where he lied. As you stated, at least half of the students in any class are American citizens. Whether Chinese or black or white, they are bonafide American citizens. The issue with student loans is applicants, nay students, borrowing money to study courses which are not lucrative or take a long time to be monetised yet are not lucrative. Why should people study History with student loans? Journalism with student loans?

America is a place of opportunities, but interested parties need to conduct deep research into their educational aspirations and career paths. I came across one career path which does not need too much education. Just have a STEM bachelor's degree as an American and MSc minimum as an immigrant, write the national and state licencing exams and viola! Big firms would be rushing you because there is a dearth of workers in the field. Simple research o. As native speakers of the English language, acing such exams should not be hard compared to Chinese or Korean immigrants.

After his arrest he called his mom from prison telling her that he now works offshore for an oil company and they don't use phone there s not always bright at the other end of the tunnel abeg wise up.
Before you relocate try improve on a good marketable skill or skills make u no go dey left behind.

Well, in life, except for exceptions - which is why they are exceptions - there is a process to succeed. Some people want to circumvent the rules in life regarding success, but that is not how things work, especially in the developed world.

As for your healthcare costs, that is pretty high. But then, salaries are higher in the US than anywhere else in the world. Are you a Green Card holder at minimum or citizen?

What you said is mostly facts. The worst thing anyone can do is to travel to a foreign country blindly without first making research. If the person is a teenager or on their early twenties, they can afford to correct such mistakes. However, if they’re in their late twenties or thirties and above, such travel mistakes can ruin them for life.

Those that want to travel to Vietnam should read my threads and also make further research before going there to avoid stories that touch.

You're assuming that work is always there for those who want it, and that those who are able to get it will always have it.

If there is anything I admired most in America is the availability of Jobs. The fact that if you lose one job there is always another job for you to do.You don't have to beg anyone for money. You may be a CEO and lose your job. if you are willing to be a security officer after your unemployment ran out, you will get one. If you lost your CFO position and ready to work in the restaurant or a truck driver you will get something doing until the right opportunity come along. You as a Nigerian that can speak and read English are in a better position that many other immigrants lacking such important communication skill.

Again, you're assuming an always accessible, reliable supply.
You are talking of housing. Yes. when you compare to where we are coming from. I am not saying this is a walk in the park. I am saying if you put effort and energy you will get result unlike back home.

You may have had good intentions to put this writing down but you kind of exaggerated most things especially in comparison to Nigeria.

Having a skill is key to surviving in our present world, be it in Nigeria, Ghana, UK, US, Europe, etc. It pays to have a skill aside your academic credentials, every Nigerian of today have already realized this, reason you see Nigerian ladies learning fashion designing, hair making, baking, etc after their graduation or during their NYSC while guys are learning forklift driving, plumbing, phone repair, programming, digital marketing, barbing, etc.

You sound like a typical APC supporter living abroad trying to justify the failures of Nigerian government under APC leadership.

Yes you need to work hard and smart to succeed in the United States but you can't say the same for Nigeria where hardwork and wisdom hardly get most people anywhere. In Nigeria, you need more than hardwork, wisdom and sense to succeed. You need hardwork, wisdom, sense, luck, prayers, connections and more to stand a chance of making it.

Many Nigerian youths are ready to work but where is the job?

Many are even ready to do odd underpaid jobs in Nigeria yet there is none.

How can you compare that with the US where you can find job so long as you are ready to work. In Nigeria even if you are willing to do the odd job to survive, you can hardly find one to start with.

Accomodation is as bad as it is in the US in Lagos and Abuja too. The biggest challenge people face in Nigerian cities is accomodation. You assume every Nigerian have a father that built a house, says who?

How many Nigerians live in the city to talk of having an accomodation in the city to rely on?

Things are now highly expensive in Nigeria, we that joggle between the two can tell you better.

Don't you ever compare Nigeria's situation with that of the United States.

Those that found themselves in jail in the US are bound to be in jail, they are the born criminals who cannot live without committing one crime or the other. They want to hammer millions overnight to intimidate others without enterprise. It is not the case for many Nigerians in the United States.

US is a country that support anybody's dream. If you desire to be rich and you work towards it and stay on course without being too greedy and stupid you will achieve it. It's not like Nigeria where you need connections, need juju, need ifa prediction, need special deliverance prayers, fasting and prayer to succeed.

Please don't paint the wrong picture of abroad, United States of all places not even the UK or Spain, Italy, etc

If you were talking about Spain, Italy, Greece, UK, etc where it is difficult to secure stable job, then I can agree with you to some extent but United States of America where jobs are everywhere waiting for those willing to work, haba Oga you no try at all.

You are even lucky you have a job to do to pay your so called high living cost and bills. In Nigeria, you will be ready to work, acquire the skills and yet no job to do to even talk of paying the cheap bills or stuffs.

The reason Americans don't have up to that amount saved has been explained below:

Kenn55:

All the western world countries are almost the same except for little variations here and there.

They are all credit societies where large chunk of their economy is driven by consumer spending.

However you have the choice to stay out of loans. For example, If you don't have money to go to school, then you don't have to study courses that would keep you heavily indebted since you will be taking loan to study. You can study in demand courses in colleges with grant rather than go to a high ranking university to study with loans. You can decide to drive a 15 year old car and pay for it in cash rather than going for a brand new or fairly new car with loan.

You can even keep renting instead of buying a house on mortgage if you hate loans so much but that doesn't make sense since houses are assets and not liabilities. Even though you owe money on a house, you can sell it and make profit when the time is right.

Note that an average oyibo doesn't care much about debt the way we do cos that is how they live from beginning and it's part of their lifestyle as built by their system.

You talked about savings but note that these western countries are not built for savings but spending. Like I said before, it is the bedrock of their economy. Besides, the structure of their society coupled with fairly good governance makes savings not to be a big deal.

Why do people need savings? In case of emergency. What are the do or die emergencies? Loss of job, health, accidents, loss of shelter, life etc. The oyibo model is insure instead of savings. This is why insurance is one of the biggest industries in North America.

In this place, your insurance is your savings while in places like Nigeria, your savings is your insurance because of the model our society is run. You see the difference.

Why would an average oyibo be bothered much about savings when he has insured against all possible emergencies? Life, employment, health, home, car, accident and even pet sef dey get insurance. These insurance coverages cost money but because of their mentality, they embrace it but majority of us Africans will see it as a waste and instead save those money in the bank and that would form part of our "savings".

So when you read an average oyibo have little or no savings, that is the truth but it doesn't tell the full story.

You asked a valid question but you need to understand how the society is built in order to properly navigate it. The choice to embrace the oyibo model or our Nigerian model or a little mixture of both is left for you.

That said, it is always interesting how you people reel out expenses but never earnings. Dem dey owe una salary for there? Una no dey earn money wey una dey spend? Why the focus on expenses but not earnings? Do you spend out of thin air?

Also, if the US is so bad, how come Nigerians in the US are the biggest buyers of real estate in Nigeria? Yes, Nigerians abroad especially those in the US purchase more real estate assets in Nigeria than Nigerians in Nigeria.

All I can say is,the mentality makes the difference.
We all have different opinions and it doesn't mean the other person's opinion is wrong or bad but that is just the way he or she is experiencing issues . Different strokes for different people .
One thing I have come to realise about this life is ,what works out for someone may not work out for you ,so just chart your own path
