Most likely as a result of heatstroke, imagine walking long distances under temperature as high as 45°C. There's a current heat wave in Saudi Arabia and other parts of the middle east. Even with numerous cooling stations provided across the states where hajj is being performed, people are still passing out from exhaustion and dehydration. Regardless of the weather, there's no year people from across the world don't lose their lives during hajj. RIP to the departed.

Jerusalem pilgrimage is more or less sightseeing of historical sites from the biblical era, there's no stipulated time when Christians are supposed to go for the pilgrimage. You can go at your own convenience. Now compare that to hajj where millions of people from all over the world converge for pilgrimage which involves walking long distances for days. Some die from exhaustion, some die from stampede, some with terminal illnesses go there hoping to spend their last days there.
