Don't fûck with smart TV unless your data sub is uncapped

Meanwhile by the time you get that uncapped data you're paying more than DStv sub already... it's a zero-sum game

Smart box is different from smart TV.

Who is advising you to use a smart TV?
Get a smart box which will consume data at almost the same rate as your phone.

Sure they do, I actually read the post from a nairalander talking about how he has been enjoying the unlimited 20 (20 for 20mbps download speed) from airtel. He stated that the router comes in two variants, an outdoor unit(ODU) and the normal 5G routers that usually come with a small power bank. I was reading as a guest and I didn't save the link to that particular post, it would have come in handy at this point. I don't know if it's just me, but lately, MTN data just seem like a bottle of fanta given to a toddler, it's exhausted in no time. I've spent 8k on data this week alone.

MTN are a bunch of licensed crooks, they will always wipe off the data when they think you're not looking

unless you have unlimited data, using a smart TV for watching content is useless... and might as well stay with DSTV.

if you do have unlimited data, you can easily get an IPTV app on your smart TV and watch channels/movies/series/sport etc from all over the world.

Honestly, data is expensive. Ordinary YouTube is chopping 5GB a day, I can imagine what streaming 4k or HD on TV would cost.

Watching TV using data is always gonna be expensive especially if it comes through mobile. Here my standard 20g is just for mobile usage even though wifi is everywhere for free. To watch Tv(multiple devices), you need a high speed fibre optics subscription which is installed by the telecommunications companies and they own the equipment, you just pay the monthly bill of about $70cad but its unlimited data.

Bottomline is that without the package being unlimited, its gonna be very expensive!

Thanks for this suggestion. I take it that Showmax doesn't use data, right?

Depending on your location, install fiberone broadband internet and enjoy unlimited access to internet then thank me later....
Re: My Experience Using A Smart TV by Dennisochampa: 10:00pm On Jun 23
Netflix 5K per month
Prime videos : N2,300 per month.
YouTube premium : N1,230 per month.
If u want to watch sports, there are live streams website that can give u free streaming as long as u have data....
Cast them on your smart TV from your phone (depending on how stable your internet connection is)
All these no pass 10k....
The only advantage with dstv is that for the sports, it does not depend on internet, rather on weather so it's almost the same thing considering that bad weather affects dstv connections..

Re: My Experience Using A Smart TV by go4success(f): 10:02pm On Jun 23
@pocohantas consider Airtel 5g router. If Airtel is okay in your area, the 20k monthly unlimited works great. That's what we use and besides streaming content on smart TV, everyone in the house connects to it on various devices. I was on the 20k for 200gb plan before so was combining it with DSTV to save data. But I stopped DSTV subscription when I discovered the plan. We now switch between Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube and other entertainment apps for content. Nobody missed DSTV. I consider it cheaper since I work from home. No more different bills for work and entertainment.
determination26:
To really enjoy your smart TV, you'd need to be in a situation where you never have to bother about how many GB/MB you have left in your data plan. I was reading on Nairaland recently that Airtel offers unlimited internet for 20k, but I think you might need a 5G router to enjoy the benefits, I'm not really sure so be sure to do a little more research or visit the nearest office. Starlink is also an alternative, I think the price of the setup was reduced recently to about 400k or thereabouts and monthly unlimited is 38k.

Call me old school or stingy but if I am to advise people that have smart tv sets, get a smart tv that can upscale so you would just have to screen mirror whatever you want to watch from your phone to the tv. It is cheaper. Opening some of these apps directly from the tv set consumes a whole lot of data.

So, at the heart of the matter is cost... and utilization:
So, with Dstv, you subscribe monthly, at say, 12,500 or 15,700 for compact, but you hardly stay at home to watch, besides, they have old movies, but sole rights to some key programs like football, reality shows, etc.

On the other hand, with smart TV, you have to subscribe to the apps - Netflix, showmax, prime, etc, say 6,000, then get unlimited monthly data for about 25,000., which, like. Dstv, requires monthly subscription irrespective of usage...

For me, I think, its still cost effective to stick with Dstv, in addition to data subscription on your phone (which is inevitable). This, you can use.for Netflix and co on your mobile when you can.

Can 1TB last one for a year?

I am considering subscribing Mtn 1TB data plan for 100k.I think in the long run it saves money.
Actually it can, if moderately used. We @Skymaxy experimented on it last yr connected all our CCTV about 3 to them, plus staff gadgets both personal and company and it was running till last month May 2024.

Buy MTN or Airtel 4G or 5G broadband. But if you have the money to spare, you can buy starlink. Starlink cost close to 500k though, subscription fee per month is close to 40k. It's unlimited sha.

You can make research about fiberone too, if it's in your area, it's very cheap and it's unlimited too.
