Do some research and don't wallow in ignorance.

I read this a while back in Nairaland, it's a common occurrence. Some of them are career beggars.

I didn't say you did, I asked you. Or, you are too blind by anger that you didn't see the question mark? I asked you because I was like, "how did you know all these"?
Why would you ask the question? Did I say that I did anything for any beggar?

Which word or sentence in my comment warrants your question?

I am aware of the ongoing hardship in our land, but these are people who are incapacitated in almost all ramifications of living

Please, endeavour to do so, your pot of oil will never run dry.

This is PORT HARCOURT CITY, and not a Northern part Nigeria, as some of the posters below are insinuating
But they will always vote APC instead of LP or PDP. They should live with their choice.

Go to China and see handicaps doing bobby jobs but here in Nigeria they don't just want to work.
Some of them are handicapped, and you know Nigerian factors
If an able-bodied must strive before they get what they can eat what happens to the handicapped?

The day I vowed NEVER to give the aboki beggars money again was because of the conversation I witnessed and heard some years back.

Something took me to Oshodi, while in the bus going back home at the park where we were loading, a fellow passenger sighted a crippled Hausa beggar, called and greeted him. The beggar crawled to where our bus was loading and the passenger asked him whether he travelled because he has been scarce for some months. The beggar said Yes that he travelled to Kano his place to go and complete his 3rd building. All the passengers shouted simultaneously: Third Building! And the man said Yes, that he has three buildings of two-storeys each.

It was as if they poured cold water on us after sitting under the sun for sometime, you know. Everywhere became so quiet, and people were shaking their heads in shock!

So they toil day and night in their places of business and work, give the little they have to the beggars, only for them to go build houses with their sweat, while they're here struggling, even to pay rent!
Passengers activated deep-thought mood that day ooo. I vowed from that day that "they'll never see my cash! NEVER!

Give them food, not money.

Don't give them money because they are mischievous. If you offer them a job that they can do, they will run from it. If you put the kids in school, they will withdraw the kids from the school. If you give them an accommodation, they will run from it. As a matter of fact, many of them are rich. Some of them have tricycles and buses generating daily income for them through public transport business.

Even in giving them food, know your limit. Most of them purposely give birth to babies or even higher babies just to make you pity them.

Years ago, I knew a beggar who rejected free medical treatment of his open wounds. He openly admitted that the wounds make people to pity him and give him money. His able-bodied wife had no occupation. His kids were looking good and were not out of school. After many years, the wounds naturally healed but he shamelessly continued to beg. He is/was popular in Garrki market in Enugu State.

I rather send the children of a beggar to school or buy food items for the beggar's family than give the beggar money, irrespective of how pityable the beggar appears.

Some blind beggars are led (paraded) by youths who are able-bodied and old enough to hustle and feed those beggars. Why will an eighteen-year-old able-bodied person lead a blind person around to beg in a marketplace? While will a female beggar be giving birth almost every year? Why will an able-bodied woman above the age of 25 lead her blind husband up and down in a marketplace to beg for help? Can't she hustle to take care of her home? And why do they beg for decades? Can't they save money to start a good business?
Everything said here is the absolute truth. The thread should've ended here because no one else will post a more suitable opinion. "Teach a man to fish and you've fed him for a lifetime."

You said Islam doesn't support begging but why do Islamic leaders turn a blind eye to this act?
Islam and Muslims are two different entities. It is possible for a Muslim to be ignorant of the ruling of Islam particularly on this matter. And begging to some is be cultural or can i say that's what they met on ground! And some leaders know the ruling and does not wish to follow it.

Infact some perpetuate this act of begging. There's a mosque I usually pass by in bauchi. In the morning these boys gathers there with their plates ànd all, all geared up for the day. An elderly man addresses them before they set out. I just shake my head. Would it be difficult for a Muslim, who's ready to give a Christian man the whole world just so he can convert to his religion, to take these kids off these streets? Enroll them in a trade school, have them use their God given talents for something. It's really pathetic to be honest. At a traffic stop I once saw a boy begging. Next to him was another with a bunch of facemasks in his hands selling. Just pathetic to be honest
We have this in Lagos too. I have seen an handicap man selling wares in Ikeja! And close by you'll see others begging! It's a matter of one's disposition and cultural values!

At least it is less common among Muslims from the south!
