EFCC, Police Personnel Formed ‘Kidnap-for-Ransom’ Syndicate In Enugu, Detain Suspected Fraudsters In ‘Makeshift Cells’

Certain individuals within the Enugu State police command and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have been implicated in the kidnapping of Nigerian youths, particularly those suspected of being involved in online fraud, commonly referred to as ‘Yahoo boys’.

Sources told SaharaReporters that the rogue police officers and EFCC officials have formed a clandestine team that collaborates to apprehend suspected ‘Yahoo boys’, targeting their homes or detaining them on the streets, often for exploitative purposes.

According to sources, the security personnel have adopted a tactic akin to kidnapping, mimicking criminal organisations, as a means to circumvent the lack of evidence needed to formally arrest and charge suspected ‘Yahoo boys’, bypassing standard legal procedures.

SaharaReporters learnt that the squad’s victims are abducted and held captive in undisclosed locations until they meet the ransom demands, effectively being treated like kidnap victims.

This rogue squad, comprised of errant security personnel, detains the suspects in makeshift holding cells, mirroring the tactics employed by kidnappers, to extort money in exchange for their release.

A police source said, “So rogue EFCC officials and some policemen formed an illegal squad and they would go for raids on ‘Yahoo boys’. But because they have no base to take them, they would practically hold them to ransom, kidnap-style and never release them until they pay ransom.”

According to one of the sources, some policemen involved in the illegality have been arrested.

However, the sources could not say if the EFCC had done any similar house cleaning to arrest and sanction its officials involved in the illegality.

Some of the policemen on our side who are involved in such have been arrested but I cannot say if the EFCC apprehended their officers involved,” one of the sources said.

When SaharaReporters contacted the EFCC spokesperson, Mr Dele Oyewale, for his comment to our findings, he denied the agency's involvement in such illegal arrests.

He said, “The configuration of EFCC does not allow for that. The standard operating procedure of the commission does not allow that; it is a very disciplined organisation.

“It's never possible for the EFCC personnel to be conniving with policemen to be doing that. That allegation has no basis because there is no substance. There is no evidential proof. Just last week, four people were arrested for impersonation in Enugu. We are not that kind of organisation.”

The allegations were also denied by the Enugu State Police Command spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe during his telephone interview with SaharaReporters on Sunday.

Ndukwe said, “The information is vague and I would urge those bringing these to be more specific for proper investigation. The claim that we arrested some officers doing that is not true. We don’t have any officer charged for that habit presently.”

Impersonation is rife, if you are arrested and you ain't a cyber criminal ask them to take you to their offices.

Besides, if you were obtained why not forward your evidence together with these reportage, premium times and people's gazette are very good in such undercover report. There are too many corrupt elements in all the law enforcement agencies in Nigeria

People have been saying it since that insecurity in the SE is artificial and mostly sponsored by government agencies. The EFCC, army and police are all involved and the government turns a blind eye.

The army works with fulani herdsmen to kidnap people and extort huge ransoms from them.
The police will mount roadblocks and extort motorists by day but once it's evening, they will turn to armed robbers and kidnappers.

Nigeria is indeed the world's largest crime scene.

Of fake or real EFCC

What are you talking about? Have you been living under the rock or you just want to feign ignorance of what has been happening since?

A popular OAP in Owerri, called Nonso Nkwa had done several videos with full evidence of how police and army were involved in most of the criminal activities going on in Imo State in particular and SE generally. Sometimes, police will stop you on the outskirts of the city, in the guise of checking your papers, then the next thing, they will jump into your car and ask you to move at gun point or will even seize the steering from you, then drive along the highway. On the way, they will tell you to transfer huge amount of money to them or risk being killed and thrown into the forest. And these are not empty threats. If you're alone in the car, it makes it worse for you. They could kill you, throw your body away and drive your car to another state where they sell it to their syndicate buyers.

All these has been happenings and the government can't claim not to be aware. They know, from the authorities in Abuja down to the state headquarters. They're all aware!

They feel it serves their evil interests in the following ways:
1. It projects the SE as unsafe and they easily put the blame on IPOB or ESN.
2. It punishes the Igbos they hate so much.
3. It enriches them because these syndicates pays returns to their ogas at the top.
4. It scares away investors since no one will want to invest in an unsafe zone.
5. It makes them feel happy since they won't have to suffer the effects of insecurity alone while SE will be relatively safe.

These are the factors driving over 90% of the insecurity in the SE.

Indeed Nigeria is the world's largest crime scene.
