DUNDEEmoderatos:Have you ever heard of the maxim of he who pays the piper dictates the tune? What Tinubu is trying to do is to invade the domains of the state govs by using the LGs. He knows like everyone else that the LGs were put under the states by the Constitution. You might not like it but that is how it is. The states are the gateways to the LGs. Expect ALGON, NULGE etc etc to soon release statements thanking Tinubu for this "landmark" move. Expect visits to Aso rock from them soon as well. It is a case of abuja boys vs the govs. If it was not, the NASS would have been the best place to achieve this without the assault on clear provisions of the constitution 1 Like |

mohbadliveson:everybody that has commented lack wisdom.See before you give financial autonomy to LGs which is appropriate, the first thg tinubu would have done is to ensure states don’t conduct elections for councils.Delta election is on Saturday and nobody is feeling as if there’s any election coming up because once Okowa writes your name down u have won.You cannot have a financial autonomy for ppl that are hand picked by the gov.Our LGs are highly dysfunctional because of the way they get into office. So in as much as I support LG financial autonomy, the first thg to have done is make sure their elections are conducted by inec so there can be competition in the process.U carry money give who governor Dey control then you have not achieved anything. 1 Like |

It’s foolish to enact LG autonomy when details on the responsiblilities of state has not been outlined. If states can’t control LG then what’s the use of the states then? LG autonomy would only be good if state police existed 1 Like |

This thief is not ashamed to speak, that was how they control and hand picked LG chairman as pawns and puppets alike. This move will reduce the power Governor's have over the LG chairman, and will create checks and balances in the state. But then we need to strengthen the state judicial system to keep the LG chairmen in check, remove immunity for LG chairmen if there's any. 2 Likes |

Watch how only past and present crooks will be crying over the LG Autonomy victorious decision. If not that the entire NULGE is already inside the pockets of state governors, this issue would have been long settled. Anyone against this is a crook. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Mr James we have to move forward. Does the constitution empower governors to withhold and use L.G.A funds as they dim? It is that abuse by you and your cohorts that has brought us here. U even mentioned that FG will use it for political gains, so na state governors na im good to dey use am for political gains? Abeg I no wan talk too much, let's move to other pressing issues. 1 Like 1 Share |

It's a wonderful judgement by the supreme Court. However, it's an impetus for another do or die contest for local government chairmanships. The governors would do everything humanly possible to influence the local government chairmanships election. They would do all to impose their stooges as chairmen, those idiots they can control and even instruct them to bring some of the money. This is an open avenue and if effectively followed up can make every local government develop. It can provide infrastructure to rural areas and make them more attractive for residence to live in thereby reducing congestion in the Cities. It would also enhance security, accord people to function effectively while also making allowance for provision of employment. It's more of a positive competition with the governors in alleviating the living standard of the citizens. Summarily, it's a good judgement but I have my reservation and that's Nigeria. Nigeria has a thing against developments, against good thing, against anything progressive. However I think, who knows, probably this could be an exception. Hope the Poor will eventually breathe if they can still stay alive for a little while. 1 Like 1 Share |

Nigeria doesn't have the resources to run local government autonomy. Local government chairmen will start moving on convoy with scares resources. It's only means more money to waste. Although it's the perfect system of government but the state is too poor to even consider local government autonomy 1 Like |

What do you expect from an ex convict. Someone found guilty of stealing his state resources put under his care. How will he support direct allocation to the local government. 2 Likes |

Racoon: Focus on the message not the messenger. Ibori the last time I checked is still a citizen of Nigeria. The fact that he is an ex convict doesn't vitiate his right to hold personal views. Let's enrich the discussion by looking at the pros and cons of the ruling rather than throwing invective. This platform ought to serve as melting pot for cross fertilization of ideas but all we keep seeing is insult upon insult on personality. 1 Like |

A valid point raised, the same constitution also recognized the establishment of a local government election which serve as the apex office at the local level of governance, and most governor do not allow these office to exist instead they choose the have a caretaker committee govern the affairs of the local government. In most cases governor do this to be in charge of these areas and also control the budgetary flow to the local government This is a welcome judgement which I also feel that the Senate be responsive to it by amending the constitution to this effect. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Any local government autonomy that only addresses the financial aspect without taking into cognizance the leadership recruitment process is faulty. As a first step, the body that will be saddled with the responsibility of conducting the election that will usher in CEO of the local government should not be the State internal electoral body. |
