Chairman, Senate Committee on Finance, Sen. Sani Musa (APC, Niger-East), in defending the plan to tax the profits of banks, said the banks had made more money lately, taking advantage of the administration’s foreign exchange policies.

He stated, “The end-of-year reports of the banks tripled, despite the high interest rates. How are they making this money?

“They should be taxed to contribute to infrastructure development in this country.

“I believe taking a small percentage out of that profit to contribute to our economic development is not bad.

“I am in full support that we should look at the books of the banks in terms of their profitability in foreign finances.”

Sen. Adetokumbo Abiru (APC, Lagos-East), who chairs the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions, also gave his full support to the amendment of the budget and the Finance Act.

“The profits of the banks must have come from the liberalisation of the foreign exchange market and the policies of the current administration.

“So, it’s not out of place to ask the banks to contribute some funding to the running of our economy”, Abiru added.

However, Sen. Seriake Dickson (PDP, Bayelsa-West), cautioned against what he termed the hasty amendments to the Finance Act, saying that the Senate must not pass laws that would later be unimplementable.

He argued that a government must not continue “to tax our citizens, whether corporate or otherwise.”

The former Bayelsa governor added, “We are talking about taxing the profits of banks, that will be a serious issue. We should step down the bill and have the benefits of expert opinions on it.”

Dickson recalled how the National Assembly passed a similar bill for more taxes by telecommunications operations through the Office of the National Security Advisor, adding that though the law was signed, it had to be quickly withdrawn due to public outcry.

Make una Abiru that was a bank MD until yesterday, see wetin he Dey support . 🤷‍♂️

So it is the bank that must use finance new minimum wage and Lagos-Calabar coastal road project from their profit ba?

When banks start moving mad and start transferring this to their corporate and individual customers now, we will be blaming banks .

It is forbidden for these useless lawmakers to take pay cut to contribute to naija development , instead it is the bank and its customers that must sacrifice . 🤦‍♂️

You didn't start this post well, but u ended it well.

What is Fubara expected to do to prevent a criminal from being a criminal? Crime happens in all the 36 states of this country. Few weeks ago, a vandal was arrested for vandalizing the lights fixed on the newly renovated 3rd mainland bridge in Lagos. Do we pin that vandal's criminal activity on Sanwoolu like u want to pin this one on Fubara?

The koko is there is a law and law enforcement agents have successfully apprehended the criminals in both instances; there's no need politicizing the acts of criminals that doesn't favor anybody but the criminals.

I agree with you 100% that in the Niger Delta companies usually face serious issues with their host communities. This is mostly because the indigenes always have this sort of mentality that the companies didn't bring anything to their community aside capital & equipment which they use to make billions, pay billions to FG and state as tax while leaving them the host community with little or nothing. I'm not saying this mentality is right, but that is mostly what drives them.

Like u rightly said, most companies always plan for such community issues. Some companies go as far as giving the host community a tiny bit of their shares such that when the company pays its shareholders dividends, the community will get something substantial which will be shared by their leaders however they deem fit. That way everybody is happy and the community leaders always fish out criminal elements threatening the companies' operations

there are two issues - theft of materials which is large;y a process and security thing, and incursion by the community which is partly a government matter.

Fubara is governor of the state. he has the power to get the community leaders in line. we saw fashola do the same with the restive community when dangote was building his refinery. this is also why we had doubts about wigwes university.

people complain about lagos all the time, but these are the things that ensure that all your state gets is an ioc mini office rather than a head office

if your community leaders and youth are too foolish and short sighted to understand creating a business friendly environment, you as the governor should know better and call them to order

then again, most of these governors are just idiots elevated to leadership positions. fayose actually pulled this nonsense in his first term when he brought some thugs to burn a bank down, and in his second term when he dug ditches in front of all banks in ekiti because they refused to let him shake them down

port harcourt is also a stakeholder in this matter.

Baba, Niger delta and oil matter goes beyond what a governor can solve .

If it was something that can be solved by a state governor , do u think FG would’ve come up with amnesty program? The Dangote matter with host community in Lagos is a totally different ball game entirely .

You need to have a conversation with a member of the host community in the Niger Delta to have a peek into their mindset

i have an understanding of their mindset. anyone who has worked in ph has. 'it is our oyel ' . the men are lazy and the women are the hustlers. also why cultism is popular. easier to take machete and rob someone than do 9 to 5 taking shit from someone

imho, they are all part of it. you think governors are not getting their own cut from oil bunkering etal? when amaechi was governor there was a significant reduction in cult activities and violence in rivers. when wike entered, cult activties resumed, bunkering got to an all time high, and kpofire became so entrenched that there is permanent soot in the air in ph.

it is the same miltants who are pledging allegiance to fubara or wike right now. the governors are complicit in all this. same wike who was insulting chiefs cannot call them to tell them to tell their boys to behave?

After Lagos, Rivers makes the highest IGR, but the men and women are lazy.

It is easier to machete and rob someone, than to do a 9 to 5.

Cultism thrives in Rivers, yet for the first time in a long time, we saw a dead man been ridden upon with bikes and people celebrating inside this Lagos.

If that was Rivers, only heaven knows how many extra pages we for get on that matter.

Summary of what happened.

The question is will the banks declare profits next time or look for a way to hide it.
And I wonder how we hope to convince businessmen to invest if you are saying you can come after profits or stop shareholders from being paid..

Apart from Lagos which is like the melting pot of hustlers from across the country, a lot states across the country are quite chill, though some more chill than others. For example, it's not uncommon to find tons of idle young men in Benin, but going from Benin to say a Calabar and seeing how relaxed its people are can come as a culture shock. I'd just say people are chill in most places not called Lagos because there's just not enough opportunities in their communities.

There has been an exodus of companies and workers from pH to lagos because of violence. Has Ph economy shrunk or grown over the past 10 years?

We settle community in lagos as well. Settle once and you are done. Is that the case in pH?
