It's called being realistic. People who make and sell the petrol all want to be paid, and refineries cost a lot of money to maintain and run, plus business loans must be paid back, and more jobs must be created.

Paying subsidy is a big part of why by May 2023, 99% of our revenue was going to debt service. Cost of producing petrol has no respect for the amount bugeted for subsidy. You can budget N2 trillion for subsidy in a year, and in that same year, price of crude goes up by 50% meaning your subsidy costs rise two to fourfold. But you already have a budget...so where does the rest of the money come from

Usually from the health and education and even sporting budget. And government takes a loan to cover things up, and the deficit for next year risies, as does loan servicing.

There is a reason why subsidy removal has been on the lips of several governments since 1980's. It';s not for fun....it is because if we kept fuel at 15 kobo per liter since 1981, subsidy costs would have by now dwarfed our earnings, and budget. Our debt would have been in the trillions of dollars, and we would have been at the mercy of everyone.

But since you want to help the poor by selling fuel at 15 kobo per liter, so be it.

Precisely. At the moment, it costs 700 Milluion naira to pay for subsides. monthly. If fuel had remained at N145, it would have cost over N1.5 billion naira or more monthly to pay for subsdies....at a rate of N1200 PER Liter.

If fuel had stayed at N65...it would be costing N 1300 per liter to subsidse fuel. At fuel consumption of 60 million a day, you do the math....it would make your brain tremble.

A cleaner overseas pays for fuel at market price, and pays for power at market price, that;s why they get it well well

They also pay property tax and council tax to get a good rail and public transport service.

Yeah I get you, but assuming GEJ Had listened to the ojota people, and returned fuel to N65, back when we were spending N34 per liter as subsidy, and the price remained N65 to date, our subsidy cost would have risen from N34 per liter to N1300 per liter

You can see the effect it would have on our budget, and by extension our debt. Maintaing fuel at N195 was by May last year costing us 99% of our revenue in servicing

Agreed, e go stressful with subsidy removal in totality, but keeping subsidy is another way to economic disaster.

Why I prefer total subsidy removal is that it is the least worst of two worst options. ....it guarantees some more domestic refining, savings of forex, earning more forex, and crucially more jobs and investment. Keeping subsidy just makes things worse as removing it...without those added benefits.

Also, subsidy causes severe deficit.....if you are Presidnet and you budget N5 trillion for subsidy for the year 2025, at oil price of say 80 dollars per barrel, and then oil jumps up to 120 dollars per barrel....that increases the cost of making fuel, and thus the subsidy costs....which means you have to take money from other sectors, plus the potential savings you make from high crude prices....to pay for subsidy

THat leaves you with a DEFICIT...which has to be filled with loans, and which leads to increased debt servicing

So, you won't see the benefit of high crude.
