The Gombe State Governor, Inuwa Yahaya, said Tuesday that his administration cannot pay the new national minimum wage of N70,000.

Mr Yahaya, who chairs the Northern Governors Forum, spoke at a meeting with labour leaders, civil society organisations, and traders associations at the Government House in Gombe, ahead of the planned nationwide protest.

He said Gombe State’s limited allocation from the federation account makes it impossible to implement the increased wage package. This is despite the fact that the federal allocation to Gombe and all other states has increased since President Bola Tinubu announced the removal of petrol subsidies.

“I cannot pay the N70,000 minimum wage, and I suspect many other states are in the same predicament,” he said.

He said even the previous minimum wage of N30,000 was a struggle for many state governments to implement.

The governor also said that Gombe State has yet to receive the promised 20 trucks of rice from the federal government, intended to alleviate the suffering of its citizens.

PREMIUM TIMES reported that the federal government announced the donation of 20 trucks of 25kg bags of rice to each state as part of efforts to ameliorate the cost of living crisis faced by Nigerians.

Mr Yahaya also said the state received only N2 billion, contrary to the N5 billion palliative allegedly given to states by the federal government.

The Governor attributed last year’s fuel subsidy removal, which exacerbated Nigerians’ hardship, to a decision initiated by former President Muhammadu Buhari and announced by President Bola Tinubu.

He said President Tinubu had no choice but to announce the subsidy removal, as the National Assembly was not inaugurated at the time of his swearing-in and there was no provision for petrol subsidy in the 2023 budget beyond June.

Governor Yahaya urged residents of the state to shun the nationwide protests, which, he said, could lead to violence and destruction.

Lol, before, the governors were shielded from the insult and only Tinubu took the blame of minimum wage.

Now that FG will start paying it, the governor will start receiving their own barrage of insults coz e sure me say 40% of the states won’t be able to pay that 70k.

I am even surprised Gombe is paying 30k, Abia can only muster 18k so Gombe still senior one state.

I don't understand what this people mean by we can not pay 70 thousand naira minimum wage, is it that the institution managed by this workers are unproductive or what? If yes then why run an institution that is not productive? Just for employment sake? The main reason people choose private school over government school today is not because their are no learned teachers in government schools, as a matter of fact their are more qualified teachers in government schools than private, the problem is, this government schools just like any other government institution in the country are not properly managed, most government school teachers only attend classes once or twice in a week, same with headmasters and principals, who will punish the teachers for not attending classes? Is it the principal that's also at home? Or the Education ministry workers that are also at home? The problem of Nigeria is nobody is ready to carry out his duty, majority of the so-called workers that are clamouring for minimum wage increase are not doing their work.
To solve this problems once and forever, any political office holder that is underperforming should be voted out, any voter that collect bribe before casting his or her vote should be giving one hundred strokes of cain, any institution that is not productive should be scrapped and workers that are not performing their duties properly should be laid of.

It's left for the civil servants in Gombe state to fight for their right. They should call their governor to order and make him pay a reasonable amount.

Most governors have never run a successful business therefore lack the ability of creating wealth.
If you can't pay 70k you have no business occupying office of governor.

Governor resign if you can't pay no be by force you must govern them. If you can't go and use all the resources find it then you are in the wrong job. Being a governor is not just building roads and paying salaries you must also attract bring investors to your state if you can't do it resign. They have the best cars bulletproof and the most expensive furnitures but can't pay ordinary salary.

People fail to realise that state allocation is not only for civil servants. Its for millions of people in the state.

The whole minimum wage thing is baffling. Why must every single state adopt a uniform salary rate in a country which is supposed to be practicing Federalism? Why have a uniform wage structure as if we are a unitary state?

Does the daily expenses of a Civil Servant in Victoria Island or Banana Island equate with that of a local government clerk in Talata Marafa Local Government Area of Zamfara State?

That's the problem with this country. It is run by unintelligent people who in a decent society are not even qualified to clean toilets.

Then resign!

It’s that simple. You can’t come & kill yourself.

Any governor that can’t pay 70k minimum wage should step aside for anyone that is ready to pay to be sworn in.

Abia state take note.

Even with the Free Niger Delta People Crude Oil Money that the federal government is distributing to them.

They still can not pay workers salaries based on the new minimun wage.

This means that by the time Nigeria is restructured where there will be no federal allocation Gombe state and many states in the northern part of Nigeria will collapse.

THE GOVERNOR OF GOMBE STATES SHOULD DEVELOP AGRICULTURE AND SOLID MINERAL IN GOMBO STATE.

That will help to improve on the state internally generated revenue.

I suggest Gombo state institute E-GOVERNANCE to reduce cost of governance.

Some states in Nigeria have started E-Governance which is helping to cut down cost of governance.

E-governance will reduce the unproductive civil service drastically.

More workers will be available for farming work.

Agriculture is the way forward.

Talking about the new minimun wage, I think most governor in Nigeria are wicked, corrupt and untruthful,

They have large entourage of aides and security votes yet they can not pay the minimun wage.

What a corrupt Nigeria.

People don't know the implications of minimum wage increment. It's a garbage in garbage out thing, i.e circular flow, robbing Peter to pay Paul. The bad news now is that, the government will tax the private workers and self employed just to pay their own workers. May God help us. I tire.
