dallyemmy: I don't speak for the government. However, you fact check the exchange rate of Nigeria compare to our neighbours. Then you can make your inference why it's a good business for the smugglers. Have a great day! that is not what I asked you. since you have checked the exchange rate, then you should have no issues answering the questions. Is this the first time that the naira is being devalued? If devaluation is the reason for fuel being smuggled to neighbouring countries, how come the government has always said the reason for smuggling is because the price is low and needs to be increased? If devaluation is the problem, how does government deliberately devalue the naira knowing the consequences it will have in terms of smuggling? |

We should stop deceiving ourselves with this story of smuggled fuel. I've told people before and I'm glad Punch corroborated it, the fuel moving through the borders is negligible. To claim Niger and Benin Republic are feeding fat on cheap fuel from Nigeria is a big fat lie. No tanker can move fuel across the border. What is mostly used are cars and in foot and even those go in very small numbers because of the risk involved. Besides that, if you combine the number of cars, motorcycles and other vehicles in the three main countries bordering Nigeria together, it is not up to half of the vehicles in Nigeria. That's besides the fact that more Nigerians use generators than those who have cars. So this excuse of smuggled fuel causing scarcity is bollocks on my opinion 3 Likes |

By gates of an abode, blessed, A man stood, asking for donation, A beggar, cruelly oppressed By hunger, thirst and deprivation.
He asked just for a piece of bread, And all his looks were full of anguish, And was a cold stone laid Into his stretched arm, thin and languished.
Thus I prayed vainly for your love, With bitter tears, pine and fervor, Thus my best senses, that have thrived, Were victimized by you forever!

Don’t trust in self, my dreamer young, don’t trust, Beware, like ulcers, inspiration… It is the heavy fit of your unhealthy heart, Or jailed ideas’ irritation. Don’t seek in inspiration Heaven’s stuff: That’s your blood boils or powers you over! Let troubles fast extinguish all your life, Let poisoned drink be outpoured!
Could you, sometimes, in any sacred flash, Find in your soul, mute for years, The spring that is unknown yet and fresh, And full of thoughts, so simple and so dear? Don’t hark at them nor trust in them a slight, Just put on them forgetfulness – a curtain: You’ll not be able to translate them right By icy words and by a meter certain.
Whether pine creeps into your soul’s deeps, Or enters passion with its tempests -- Don’t come then at the noisy feasts of peoples With your girlfriend in utter madness. Do not abase yourself. Be shameful of the trade With wrath or with observant sadness, And of your soul wounds’ disparaging parade To shock the simple-hearted masses.
Why must we know that you suffer else, Or ever have some kind of agitation, The silly hopes of the early years, And bad remorse of your reflections? Behold: before yourself, the crowd easy sails Along the road that well wears, Their festive faces have the easy troubles’ trace And have not any shameful tears.
But, by the way, there’s not a person, single, Not mauled by a cruel action, Who had been covered with the early wrinkles, Without crime or deprivation! Be sure, they’ll ever scorn your laments and your pricks, With your tune, learned by heart and stoned, Like a tragic actor with the rouged cheeks, Waving a sable of cardboard.
And another poem from Lermotov.... |

Tell your president to make our refineries work nairalanda1:
It is simple.
1. Fuel costs below N1000 here
2. Fuel costs above N1000 over there. Even in NIger, with the recent reduction, fuel costs N1400 per liter
3. Naturally, smuggling would result. And let's be honest, it is not only big people doing it, even the small ordinary Nigerian would carry a 50 liter jerrycan of fuel across the border, and sell it, and come back with a big enough profit to bribe customs, and still have enough left over.
4. We don't have fuel, because government is struggling to pay the subsidy on fuel. Right now we owe fuel exporters lots of money, we are struggling to even pay the NNPC shortfall, and NNPC is now raiding the dividends to pay off its own shortfall.
5. And yet, Nigerians keep asking for cheap fuel
It is our desire to have N40 fuel that is causing this, people. And it is high time we woke up and realized fuel cannot be cheap, and totally removed subsidy.
Yet, anyone suggesting this now is apparently agbado, even if they have never voted for tinubu or never liked the man (I have not liked tinubu since 2005, when Gani first raised the questions about his certificate then)....
But it is obvious subsidy, even at tinubu level is not sustainable.
The only way to stop smuggling is to TOTALLY REMOVE SUBSIDES. Yes, fuel would cost N1500 per liter, and yes, Agbado people brought hardship to NIgeria, and yes NIgeria needs to divide, and bla bla bla
But you cannot sell at a loss and not expect issues.
And if you think NIgeria is the only country with this issue....
1. LIbya has a severe smuggling problem, to the point that smuggliers are being bombed by the LIbyan air force
2. Saudi has a smuggling problem with Yemen, which they are finding hard to fight
3. Iran has issues on the border with Pakistan. Iranian fuel is being smuggled into Pakistan well well. Subaisy
4. Venezuela has a massive smuggling problem. Same thing happening here. They lost 18 bn dollars to smuggling one year.
See the benefits of subsidy
Yet somehow, we want something that costs over N1000 to make to be sold at N200 or less because 'poverty'
We better wake up folks. |
