Masters without work experience will not give you a job. Except you are in the academic line, masters will not guarantee you a job.

In short, there are many people who have masters and even PhD who hide those degrees when applying for some jobs because they now find that they are probably over qualified (paperwise) for those jobs.

Skills over certificates

Skills get you money....not necessarily translates to SUCCESS

Fulfillment is the ultimate goal

SALARY is nothing

Entrepreneurship has no limits.

Holders of masters degree! What advice do you have for a BSC holder? Should he further? Wouldn't it be a waste of time and resources with the current situation of the country? Your inputs will be so much appreciated .God bless you all

A waste of time if you further in Nigeria. Except you have connection that will land you job. But studying it abroad is not a waste of time because you work while schooling and chances is high you'll get a job after graduation abroad.

Im a Masters degree holder in sports admin and management (Unilag) my candid advice as a brother and a God sent.. Brother that degree is very useless.. Find more money and japa from this entrapment called a country, go and do your masters or start work abroad. As im talking to you now me and other master degree holders are jobless for many years now. This is the biggest mistake i made in my life by doing that masters

between 2013 to 2015. I was active in the job section of nairaland . Got
Offers and worked for a mining firm, a big bank and a large audit firm.

I also applied to places like shell, Nnpc, chevron, kpmg, standard chartered bank, Saro, honeywell, unilever, alpha beta etc. Did test and interview with some of them. Foreign masters could not give some of the applicants any edge. Dey play.

Can you tell us your job search experience

Use the money and learn practical skills , dont waste it getting a worthless piece of paper, if you make your millions tomorrow, those schools will beg you to come and collect honorary degree for a price.

Except it's to augment a lower grade, obtain fast promotion or for personal prestige purposes, only embark on a master's degree when you have amassed at least three years of experience after your first degree. A master's degree without work experience (post NYSC) is no different from a bachelor degree without an experience. In fact, the latter will get more calls from recruiters and companies because they are likely to be command lower salaries and are fresh out of tertiary institutions. At the same time, those with work experiences command higher salaries than those with just academic degrees and/or less years of work experience. Also, depending on your field, relevant certifications are better off than an academic degree.

Nevertheless, nothing beats work experience!

It all depends on Ur long time objective?
Do u want a join the academia
Do you have plans to engage in any role that will put u in a vantage position with a master's
The economy has little to do with Ur own plan u can be working and schooling it all depends on what plan u have for urself nothing comes easy

That's not true, please. I saw your recent reply about some places who will not accept just an MSc, which is partly true. However, someone with a cognate work experience especially at some firms will be accepted before the person with just both MSc and BSc. Work experience is highly prized compared to academic degrees outside of academia. Without a work experience, preferably quality and cognate, a master's degree is a waste of time. Time that should have been invested in relevant certifications (field dependent) and acquiring work experience even at relatively unpopular establishments.

Currently I'm on it.
And it cost me the excess of 1.2million naira.
If you have a right kind of practical immaginato to have prduece something that will be generally recognisable you are good to go.
And don't forget pray to God always and get the right connection in our present day Nigeria. If you don't have a valid connection then Japarise.

I'll advise you get a job with your BSc degree first before going for Master. Your job will inform the direction of your PG program. If you rush to do a PG program now, it may turn out not being relevant to your job in the future.

Right now, you should be concerned with getting a job in your study field. Don't go spend money and time doing a program that the qualification may become useless. I see someone advising you to pick up a skill/certificate in IT. That'll make sense if you want to move away from the area of your BSc study. If your area of study isn't IT and you want to practice there, go for a Diploma program in Computer only.

Don't go spending money doing advanced computer program and later you still want to practice in a non-core IT area. I believe my advise to you is balanced enough. All the best.

I'm only trying to say someone with a master's degree has an edge over an ordinary B.sc. Where I work will hardly consider someone with just an ordinary degree and I know some other places like that as well.

Sometimes, some of your posts get as e be. So tell the house, what sort of master's does a tech bro need when he has the relevant certifications in his field of software development? What master's does a BSc holder with ICAN/ACCA, CFA charter and maybe CAIA need again? Unless the industry explicitly prefers academic master's (architecture is an example), it's not so important for someone who has no work experience. The fact that you say a BSc isn't enough for a man, whereas this topic has nothing to do with gender, without factoring relevant certifications is worrisome.

Agreed. I acknowledged it. There are companies like that. But it's preferable for someone without work experience to get one rather than just piling up academic degrees without in-field experience. Anyone can get a master's degree, but not everyone has obtained quality and cognate work experience.

I agree it's more of an experience for engineers and tech bro but a higher degree is always required for other discipline.
Don't mind some of my posts I like fight especially when everywhere is quiet.

The highest paying jobs/sectors that always have jobs in nigeria based on my recent activities in job boards are:

Software Development
Accounting
Human Resource Management

Only accounting sometimes request for professional qualification, not masters.

They all prioritize years of experience over a masters or a first degree in the case of Software Development.

I personally consider a masters useless. cheesy The only time you should get it for a job is if it is required in the job or career to advance.
