The Increase In VAT Is Set To Become The Blazing Inferno- Atiku by iwaeda: 9:13am On Sep 08
The increase in VAT is set to become the blazing inferno that will consume the very essence of our people.

President Bola Tinubu, alongside his coterie of advisers, has resolved to raise the VAT rate from 7.5% to 10%, even as the NNPCL has announced a soaring PMS price increase at the pump. This move unveils a new era of regressive and punitive policies, and its impact is destined to deepen the domestic cost-of-living crisis and exacerbate Nigeria’s already fragile economic growth.

President Tinubu and his entourage seem to be resorting to their familiar tactic: heaping burdens upon the impoverished while steadfastly ignoring their extravagant excesses! Tinubu’s actions reflect a profound insensitivity to the plight of the less fortunate as he indulges in the opulent renovation of villas and the acquisition of new jets and vehicles for himself and his family.

One need not be an economist to grasp the ominous implications of President Tinubu’s ill-conceived policies for Nigeria’s future. The relentless rise in taxes and interest rates has proven excessively onerous, debilitating businesses of all sizes and leading to job losses while intensifying the suffering of the poor. The manufacturing sector, in particular, has endured relentless strife since Tinubu’s ascendancy, with its contribution to the GDP diminishing by over 20% since December 2023, as reported by the NBS.

In early August, Tinubu turned his attention to agriculture. As is customary with this administration, a new policy was clandestinely formulated and announced, permitting duty-free importation of agricultural commodities such as wheat, maize, and paddy, despite vehement opposition from farmer groups nationwide. This policy poses a grave threat to Nigeria’s food security ambitions, as local farmers, facing unfair competition from low-cost producers in Asia, Europe, and America, are compelled to reduce or entirely abandon their production efforts. It jeopardizes job creation, wealth generation, and the sector’s long-term prosperity, casting a shadow over Nigeria’s sustainability and development.

President Tinubu and his advisers would be wise to redirect their efforts towards crafting sustainable solutions to the systemic shocks afflicting the economy rather than compounding the crisis with measures destined to ignite further turmoil. -AA

Where is Wole Soyinka the Gbaju e crooner?

If he could describe Goodluck Jonathan as worse than Nebuchadnezzar... what will he describe Tinubu as?

Nigerians are now seeing a devil incarnate in the person of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Tinubu is worse than Idi Amin Dada of Uganda.

If I recall correctly, sometimes back the local rice farmers justified their high prices with the intl market price of rice. If that is truly the case then they need not fear flooding of the local market with foreign rice for example. This part of the article is unnecessary.

I am sure the many Nigerians whose cries his opinions resonates with are elections losers also.
I understand that's how politics work in Nigeria. Attribute election lose to any sensible advise from the opposition because it exposes the shortcomings of the present govt which you support.

Maybe the attitude of these people in power reflects some sort of throwbacks to the indigenous cultures from where they come from. It is becoming obvious that those who have been ruled for ages by autocratic and brutal emirs and obas, seem to see governance as a place where an emperor dictates and the people follows, without necessarily worrying about the different layers of pangs of poverty tinibulating the masses. They can't do without being brutal too, since thats all they know about.

That is the only conceivable reason left to explain what is going on. Most prehistoric Obas and Emirs in some areas that formed present day Nigeria, were brutal despots who were projected as not just rulers, but as diviners too. Semi gods. They were the executive, the judiciary and the legislature in one body. The made laws and their brood of serfs bowed to say yes. Some even rolled in the mud to greet them. They had little regards for the poor tucked away in forgotte remote villages.

That is where this problem started. Because it is now obvious that the products of these societies lack empathy when they eventually find themselves government. They see themselves as some sort of "national Obas and Sultans", and because they are used to people from their ethnic groups finding it it hard to criticise them as was the case during the precolonial era, these leaders also expect the rest of us, including those that never had "almighty" obas and emirs, to also swallow their bullshit, line, hook and sinker.

Believe me, it's cultural..

You already made the senseless years of trolling as if you don't have any meaningful life going on outside NL cos wondering why normal and sane human being would be creating daily monikers just to troll those who don't share same political ideology with him.

Okay fine, let's assume I am the bad guy hence trolling but hoe about the forum statistics you are manipulating with the senseless monikers.

What's this #50 charge on deposit of more than #10 000 at this precarious time?
This is insensitivity at its peak.

That's why every region should manage themselves.
To avoid a situation politicians from certain regions will carry their archaic way of life into national politics.
You will be hearing statement like give the leaders some time to perform.
And when the vocal ones who just want a better life for everyone complain, they label them as wailers.
It's just unfortunate that people who have archaic reasoning are in large numbers who usually elect funny characters always.
Next election, observe them. They will still vote in funny characters.

You don't understand, it's not about the percentage even if it is 0.0001%. Its about timing!

Not now when fuel scarcity is biting harder.

Any sensitive government will feel the purse of the masses before adding to their pains.

What has been the benefits of the ridiculous loans they took in the past on the masses?

Why even borrow unreasonably only to fritter it away on frivolities.

I support massive cut to the cost of governance to free fund instead of going cap in hand to borrow money for basic things.

I really do not think we need to tax the masses more to be able to have fund for the big boys play with.

Not even this period. Feel the purse of the masses first.

I don't like back and forth arguments.

The Kenya opposition was made the new Minister of Finance as they initially rejected any increase of tax. Now that Kenya have limited borrowing, he has returned bsck to the tack increase which already took effects.

Meaning the Gen Z weeks of protest was just so useless

Their most prominent political mantra to excuse idiots in power is to utter "power comes from God"! And they say that with an air of finality that has all sorts of cultural stamps all over. How many times have you heard that as the most revered defence line to support brutal despots? It was used for babangida, for abacha, for buhari, etc. Even if the dictator eliminates a whole local government as obasanjo tried to do in Odi and Zaki biam, there will be an ethnic henchman somewhere, energetically trying to remind you of the need to accept the genocide because according to him "power comes from god"! Crazy cultures.

I already said the government should embrace massive cut in the cost of governance. How do you run this expensive, wasteful and flamboyant government and then expect the masses to bear the brunt without revolt.

It's not even a Gen Z thing., it's common sense. Kenya isn't a template for Nigeria.

The government needs to demonstrate prudence to be able to secure the buy-in of the masses. I'm afraid, that confidence is missing in this admiration.

If you have the ears of those in the authority, tell them there's always an elastic limit and a tipping point.

You can't force subsidy removal and currency devaluation simultaneously on the masses and then thought of increasing taxes again while everyone groan in wants.

Again, go out and feel the purse of the people
