The way Atiku is playing his role as opposition leader is becoming nauseating. How can VAT be increased without FEC's approval and legislation? Taiwo Oyedele had debunked this inaccurate information now.PBAT media men need to do more in countering Atiku's misinformation .
He encouraged FG to do everything possible to ensure nothing delays the take- off of Dangote refinery but he was quick to query speedy approval of Agip by Oando. What a double standard.

You can say that again Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

President Tinubu has been firing from all cylinders at the Nigerian masses.

He careless about our welfare, from one imposed hardship to another since the very minute of his ascension.

But we take solace in the mercy and succour of the God Almighty.

Maybe the attitude of these people in power reflects some sort of throwbacks to the indigenous cultures from where they come from. It is becoming obvious that those who have been ruled for ages by autocratic and brutal emirs and obas, seem to see governance as a place where an emperor dictates and the people follows, without necessarily worrying about the different layers of pangs of poverty tinibulating the masses. They can't do without being brutal too, since thats all they know about.

That is the only conceivable reason left to explain what is going on. Most prehistoric Obas and Emirs in some areas that formed present day Nigeria, were brutal despots who were projected as not just rulers, but as diviners too. Semi gods. They were the executive, the judiciary and the legislature in one body. The made laws and their brood of serfs bowed to say yes. Some even rolled in the mud to greet them. They had little regards for the poor tucked away in forgotte remote villages.

That is where this problem started. Because it is now obvious that the products of these societies lack empathy when they eventually find themselves government. They see themselves as some sort of "national Obas and Sultans", and because they are used to people from their ethnic groups finding it it hard to criticise them as was the case during the precolonial era, these leaders also expect the rest of us, including those that never had "almighty" obas and emirs, to also swallow their bullshit, line, hook and sinker.

Believe me, it's cultural..

You're actually a SanePolitician. You've made one of the most lucid comments ever written on Nairaland. Europe once had the same kind of all powerful royalty. Culture is dynamic, only in Nigeria it seems to get worse.

Thanks.

Good Luck to Nigeria.

Your comment does not show that you understood the history of our traditions with government arms like judiciary, legislature and executive. You don't even seem to know what women protesting naked meant for a ruler or who was part of his council. You simply assumed they had autocratic powers.

Unfair taxation and levies is what led to the Aba Women Riot and Abeokuta Women Riot.

In 1928–1930, Aba women protested against the oppressive rule of the colonial government. These Igbo women of eastern Nigeria feared that the headcount being carried out by the British would mean they were to be taxed.

I already said the government should embrace massive cut in the cost of governance. How do you run this expensive, wasteful and flamboyant government and then expect the masses to bear the brunt without revolt.

It's not even a Gen Z thing., it's common sense. Kenya isn't a template for Nigeria.

The government needs to demonstrate prudence to be able to secure the buy-in of the masses. I'm afraid, that confidence is missing in this admiration.

If you have the ears of those in the authority, tell them there's always an elastic limit and a tipping point.

You can't force subsidy removal and currency devaluation simultaneously on the masses and then thought of increasing taxes again while everyone groan in wants.

Again, go out and feel the purse of the people

Again, like Atiku said; a regressive and punitive policies. See, using opposition as a minister of finance won't help change things, cos there's corruption in Kenya as well, so the opposition is just a lucky guy there to enjoy. Regardless, even if it were Obi or Atiku who became the president, things won't have changed that much, as long as corruption is not drastically reduced.

If their coterie of advisers are wise enough, they might be careful not to make blunder policies like the ones this tax collector did with subsidy and currency on the spot, only to look for ways on how the masses should pay for it without considering how big he and his guys are living.

Normally, the economic technical chart of Nigeria in Buhari's administration was down trend, any fundamental news that is negative would continue to push the trend downward.

After transitioning, Mr tax collector and his click of advisers thought making a fundamental news like that would make the down trend to find support immediately and reverse to Uptrend. So they could become overnight heros, since Abokiz like Buhari don't understand economics..

Believe me, it's cultural..

You are right only if you break it down to regions or ethnicities.

The Igbos ran their nation on an ancient republican system, while the Yoruba's made use of checks and balances ( eg Ọ̀yọ́ Meesii) who regulated even the powers of the Alaafin or Obas.
However, the Islamic north ran on complete rule by Kings and Sultans, who had the final say.
This was why Chief Awolowo had problems with the northern rulers , always calling them as dictatorial and against liberation of the common peoples.

Tinubu, sadly , wants to run a government of kings, barons and serfs ( packaged slaves ). Sad.

U must be dumb not to see that the Govt. needs more revenue to fund its deficit budget. It can only be done through increase in taxes when they run out of loan options. Whether Oyedele denies it or not, it will be increased soon, the signs are there, the National assembly will approve in 1 day so dont think that is a sieve for debsting national issues.
