UK–based Nigerian lawyer Dr. Dele Ogun has disclosed that the major culprit in the scrapping of regional government in Nigeria was Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.) and not Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi as it is popularly believed.

The convener of the Fatherland Group made the statement on Sunday during an exclusive interview with Rudolf Okonkwo of 90MinutesAfrica.

"It's completely misplaced to say Aguiyi Ironsi's decree 34 was what abolished the regional system in Nigeria because military rule is by definition unitary," Ogun stated. "So the unitary system came in as a result of the coup."

The author of the book "A Fatherless People" explained that Decree 34 was simply used as an excuse to perpetuate the 1966 pogrom against the Igbo people.

He insisted that the decree promulgated by Yakubu Gowon, creating 12 states in 1967, formally abolished the regions and replaced them with states.

The prolific author, however, express the belief that it is unwise for anyone to advocate for a return to the regional system of government, which he described as the "Berlin strategy," which allows one ethnic group to be joined to another whose culture and language they don't share.

He argued that to get it right, Nigerians must retrace their steps to the structures that existed before the artificial amalgamation of the various ethnic groups into Nigeria.

"The structure is natural because the territories are there, and everybody knows the area of their ethnic groups," he said. "We should allow self-governance on that basis rather than using the Berlin strategy to cut those ethnic groups and join one piece with another group somewhere else whose culture they don't share."

He acknowledged that there may be a need to support the ethnic building blocks of the new nation in the transition period to ensure smooth development.

"Obviously, there would have to be some support networks, at least during a transitional period. And this is why there will still be the union to offer support in the transitional period,” Ogun explained.

"As the resources are not evenly distributed among the various ethnic groups, so too is the weight of responsibilities they can carry. So, a network of mutual support is required in the early stages to enable the new units to develop to a point where they can function independently.”

He argued that the borders of the current system were artificially drawn, as was done in the Berlin Conference, and that building the nation based on the ethnic units, which he called the Orange Union, would resolve many of the internal contradictions challenging Nigeria today.

One major criteria to be a Tinubu supporter is to hate one certain tribe and that is what Reno is doing, his lies keep getting busted

I've said it to those asking for regional government that it might not work, regional government is what led Nigeria to where it is today, Nigeria needs to break up because we don't share the same regional ideology especially on politics and leadership.

Ironsi already abrogated the resources of all the regions to the centre, thereby ending the regional autonomy. It is called unification decree for a reason. Gowon acted on what was on ground already.

"It was the decree that started the death of regionalism....General Gowon further compounded it by promulgating the Decree 14 of 1967 which broke Nigeria into 12 states and provided military governors for each state. With decrees 34, 8 and 14 regionalism was finally buried"

https://guardian.ng/opinion/history-and-the-future-of-decree-34-of-1966/

So, trying to pander to the feelings of your host or so is dishonest. When you have taken all the resources to the centre, what remains?

Aguiyi Ironsi abolished regionalism and resource control...Gowon, out of necessity due to Ojukwu's rebellion, further buried it by breaking it up into 12 states.

They have lied for almost 60 years that Aguiyi-Ironsi's Decree 34 is what abolished the Region's and ended true federalism

They know that those who will believe the lies are those too lazy to Google Decree 34 and realise it was just a civil service Decree

It was Gowon who abolished the 4 Region's Nigeria had, and replaced them with 12 states, using Decree 14

Then Gowon introduced full blown unitary rule by abolishing resource control with Decree 15

The truth is in black and white below

Regionalism wasn't even a good thing, Gowon was very wise for abolishing it, unlike Aguiyi he opted for Federalism not Unitary government.

Not necessary now, the most important thing is how to end Nigeria now let everybody go their separate ways. Nigeria is like joining China, USA, Afghanistan, Russia, Ghana and Qatar together. It will never work. We must correct this mistake lord lugard and the British government made out of their selfish interest.

Exactly!

Because the North had wanted to leave Nigeria, but the British told them if they leave, they will suffer from now till eternity and that the resources of this country is from the South.

And the following day Gowon removed the clauses of Northern succession from his speech and created 12states.

But some people who just hate Igbo people for no reason will not look at the FACTS but pure sentiments. Tell me what Igbo people have done, they have nothing to say but just running here and there

P.S. This isn't an endorsement of Ironsi because Ironsi too get his own for body, but just laying out the facts about that issue

That’s his personal opinion and that won’t change the truth..

Ironsi scrapped our regionalism..

One of the major reasons Ibo killed Saudana & Akintola was simply cuz it wouldn’t be possible to scrapped our regionalism if they were alive. They had to plan and use a coup to kill them, thereby paving way for their plans..

They wanted to control the whole of Nigeria from the center but they forgot man proposes, God disposes! Azikwe knew there was going to be a coup, he fled away I think 2 days to the planned coup day. It was all planned by them to snatch power!

I just love the fact that Ironsi didn’t end well! He was killed like a church rat and I so love that..

1. You are Yoruba

2. You didnt read and cant comprehend English too well

3. You do not know any history and think the rest of us are like you Yorubas.

4. We know where the ibos failed and we hold them to that but you Yorubas are the ones who brought tribalism to southern Nigeria

5. It was Gowon who abolished regionalism
