THE PICTURE SAYS IT WELL WITH THE BAGS.
NA TO JAPA.
1. NO SECURITY.
2. NO VALUE FOR YOUR MONEY.
3. GOVERNMENT'S POLICY.

Hello all,

If you got 26 M naira tomorrow, do you stay or japa ? I have a friend who inherited 26 M with a wife and son. He has decided to stay. I can't see that money lasting more than 2 years with today's economy in naija.

Fellow nairalander, what would you do ? Stay and invest, or leave ?

I know 30 to 40 year olds that migrated to the USA and started as cooks, drivers and cashiers...got married, had kids and made it to the middle class in 10 to 20 years.

On a long-term basis, their FAMILIES have better living standards and more wealth than they would LIKELY have gotten in Nigeria.

Also there's the REALITY that some people don't have the intelligence or work ethic to develop high value skills. For such people the USA and other Anglo-Western countries is a much better place than Nigeria.

While there's no guarantee, the data produced by various trusted sources show there's a higher likelihood of falling into poverty in Nigeria. A lot of highly skilled Nigerians returned from abroad to live permanently in Nigeria in the 1970s. Many, likely a majority of them, fell into poverty. Maybe that's why nobody cares about their stories, they don't match the tales of Nigeria as a potential paradise for hard working people 🤔 Even in 2007 to 2014, diaspora Nigerians were still returning to live in Nigeria. I was one of them.

Nigeria is a feudal-socialist economy. Socialism produces poverty. Nigeria has been the OFFICIAL Poverty Capital of the World since 2018. Can't argue with that. Ask the Anti-Jakpa Crew!!!

Good Luck to Nigeria

So because you cited just one family that you knew who started as a driver and made it as a middle class in the US makes it the norm.

While I agree with some of the points you raised, I still insist that these much touted "opportunities" people always talk about abroad are not meant for everyone, but only for highly skilled individuals.

It is a reality which cannot be argued.

And if i may ask, how is Nigeria a Socialist country according to your write up? or has socialism suddenly lost its meaning ?

26 million means you r stuck

You can't use that money for something tangible in Nigeria

And that money when changed to hard currency cannot be used to jaapa properly

Damn undecided

This is good only when the exchange rates are stable for the period of one year but if they aren't that's a big loss in the purchasing power. I thought about this last year by converting USD to naira and then buying treasury bills then on a second note I did the calculations assuming the dollar to naira rate increases what then happens to my investment that scenario made me to hold my break.

Between that time and this month Naira has lost over 70% of its value meaning my USD has gained over 70% in naira equivalence but I would have only gained 15 to 20 % in treasury bills investment while loosing (70-20)% in the value of my money if left in USD.

Treasury bills is only great when exchange rates is constant and inflation is single digits. For a volatile economy like Nigeria I won't try it at present.

DO YOU NEED TO CONVERT YOUR MONEY TO DOLLARS BEFORE SPENDING IT ON NIGERIA?

put 20m on treasury bills at 15percnt and feed the family on the upfront interest for one year. use that 6m to start a business for one year. your head go don clear after one year weda you wan move or not. please if you dont have a definite plan on what you want to do abroad, don't make that move.. its capital intensive especially for a family of three.

Looks interesting

The problem isn't the amount you have but the inflation rate leading to its depreciation.

You guys are comedians.

I asked again - what is the percentage of people that have even 5000 USD in their account abroad as savings?

People that live paycheck to paycheck and their account is constantly in red.

I am not against anyone who wanna travel but stop making it sound like 16,000 USD is so easy to come by abroad.

If some people abroad could be offered the same job they were doing before they left Nigeria, they would snatch your hands off to accept it back. Reason why most people cant come back to Nigeria is because they have nothing again to fall back on in Nigeria.

Any adult Nigeria that migrated to any of these countries, Britain, France, Italy, Switzerland, Canada, USA, Ireland , Germany, Australia and still wants to come back to Nigeria, because he /she is better of in Nigeria and he is not coming for political office or to establish his firm/business, just know he/she has serious problems, and if you give such person 26 Billion, he/she will still mismanage it and become poor.

There is nothing bad in travelling out of your country. People do, even in western world but you won't see westerners sounding condescending and insulting to their home countries. Americans move from US to other countries , no shout.

Even the US passport that many of you consider as golden tickets, thousands of Americans voluntarily renounce it every year - they willingly gave up their citizenship [https://csglobalpartners.com/americans-are-renouncing-their-us-citizenship-here-is-why/]

I have heard people in their adult lifes saying what has Nigeria done for them? Such an ingrate.

It is now Nigerians realise that the FG has been paying subsidy on their education, fuel, electricity, USD, pilgrimmage just to mention a few. Now that the FG starts to remove the subsidies, all hell let loose grin grin grin yet you will say what has Nigeria done for you in the past.

Going to another country does not mean a silver bullet and you will be wrong to generalise. People's case differ. Consider your own personal situation before you embark on it.

If people are making it abroad like it is always mentioned here, they should be flying first class and build mansions in Nigeria. Most of these people shouting here are barely making it abroad but forming super commando online.

As there are different levels in Nigeria, there are different levels abroad. Ask yourself realistically, what level are you operating where you are and stop stupid generalisation.

So, a doctor who left John Hopskins in the US to Nigeria to set up his clinic has serious problems? [ https://www.vanguardngr.com/2024/09/why-i-left-my-job-at-john-hopkins-usa-to-return-to-nigeria-after-25-years-medical-doctor/]

Everyone cannot be you.

If you do not have capacities for something or you have decided to live your entire life in western world, and die there, does not mean others will toe your path.

With 1 million I can multiply that money, I have businesses plans, I have been asking for a opportunity to get to work on these. But I haven't so far. One day it will. I have no plans to Japa. All the opportunities I seek are here in this country. Someone give me some loan or something, I am willing to listen to loan offers and partnerships, my business plans fall in h education, agriculture sector and fintech. I have HD years of experience in these sectors I really need an opportunity that's all. Just one damn opportunity at raising a capital faster than I am doing at the moment. Thanks.

Guy make una nor dey discourage person oooo... Pple dey jappa with 15 milion....let alone 26Million

So, a Senior Software Developer in Nigeria now working as a cleaner has not missed it?

You will tell me he will someday get the job , right? What percentage of them actually ace their interviews? Where will he gets the time for continuous improvement after being used as a slave as a porter for many hours ?.

Dont be generalistic when you type.

No senior software developer would have problems in developed nations globally, ICT guru got job, much more faster than medical doctor or nurse.

Well, he/she may not know what is doing in Naija, maybe that's why he results to cleaner over thre.

Any senior software developer/engineer telling you is struggling over there, only dodging you from eternal begging of money from him.
