What career path do I advise for my daughter? Currently in J.S.S 1, she's so good at English language which has earned her several awards and commendations right from her primary school.

Although, this is her first examination at Faith Academy Secondary School, but she has started to draw the usual accolades and commendations both from her class teacher, particularly her English teacher who walked up to her in class to single her for praise as she scored 100% percent in English Language which the subject teacher acknowledged that the feat was unprecedented from her students.

In contrast, she is not as good in mathematics as she does in English language, which can be traced to the poor mathematics background from her previous schools, but I have made several arrangements to encourage her so that she can improve and get better in mathematics.

My career advice and counsel for her from the outset is for her to study Nursing or any discipline in the medical profession, but with this development, I am thinking otherwise, of she has to shift focus and major in Arts & humanities or to put extra more effort to proceed into the medical profession, particularly to become a Nurse or Doctor as we have envisaged and for which she has a strong passion.

Most of us were good at a Particular subject back then.......But that didn't make us look as if we were dullards.....I was so good in physics back in secondary school that when I got into polytechnic,my first semester physics courses,I didn't even study hard but got A's in all of them.......But when it comes to mathematics,if I pass self,I dey imagine how come about . ,cuz I wasn't good at it all...

Op,you should sit your daughter down and reason with her.....At least she's still very young and very much likely to catch up......But in case she isn't interested in maths, don't force her...... Just let her choose what's on her mind and go after it ..

In my jss class I was part of the jet team, I was in love with mathematics, until I entered ss1, the lazy mathematics teacher then fuckeddd up my love for maths, by ss2/ss3 i already hated maths like three days poo, anything that involves xyz dey give me serious anger and headache, how that came to be I cant even tell, so i avoided maths like plaque I failed it woefully in, but I was good in govt, literature, English, and fair in economics and biology.

I ended up studying mass communication, now I am in the HR and consulting field, not directly related to what the degree i earned...and I have seen hundreds of people I train and consult having degrees in field entirely different from what they are applying for..na for Nigeria I don see mechanical engineers, lawyers,psychologists etc working as bank tellers, marketers etc just to survive

However the advise I want to give you now is that, please ensure your daughter learn a craft, and be good at it before she graduates from secondary school, it's obvious she's brilliant gauging by her prowess in English, jobs in Nigeria now are not even about what you studied in school or what you are good at, tht is if you are even lucky to have one.

It's much more important she's equipped with skills and crafts that would make her self sufficient before she's 18 than her being good in mathematics

still trying to wrap my head around it, how can you be good in physics and you will be struggling in mathematics? All of them involves formula, equations, hypothesis.. and cracking of brain...
I myself was never good in calculation, I struggle with maths.. but I was good at other social subject, like English, government, economics, literature... And Fair better in some science subject, like biology, agric, and geography... I think our brain works differently, some people like cracking their brain, that's why they easily do well in science class,, while we that like to comphrend and understand things or artistic in reasoning are different brain entirely... And there are few who are good in both science and social subject.. but no matter how good you are, you can't be 100% at everything

Let her study linguistic, literature or any other English related course.

Who knows, maybe one day, she'd become our Ambassador to UK or US

She will make a good journalist,lawyer,lecturer or blogger

There is PLENTY of time for her to explore her career choices and make a decision for what path to take in university.

And bear in mind that even what you study at uni may have no future bearing on your career path, as I've seen Doctors become successful financiers and Engineers become great bakers.

So please free her. Let her push her Math skills some more and polish up the English skills as far as she can.

Buy her rig light , open a YouTube channel for her to start teaching Chinese English lessons.

English language is very useless and has no economic value


She's better off learning Chinese or Russian that'll give her a lot of benefits

I was also good in English but very bad in mathematics, I had to drop it while I was still in high school.

If she is not struggling with Dyscalculia, extra maths classes for her would really help her to improve but do not put pressure on her, keep praising her for her outstanding performance in English language, the Arts and humanities may be her pathway....no pressure.

Please kindly get her a personal maths Teacher, At this level she can still be taught Maths from the scratch and don’t conclude that she is not good at it when you have not done your part.

Start maths from scratch with her.... Like from primary 1-6....thats d only solution.... Do it when they have holidays..... And don't beat her or force her.... We all learn at different pace....

Those Good in Physics , are usually good with Maths, Infact, its the "goodness" in Maths, That makes them Comprehend Physics properly

Allow her to finish SS1 and see her performance in English language, mathematics, Biology, physics and Chemistry. Introduce her to one other language too. Her results after SS1 will determine...

In the meantime, encourage her to take on public speaking and open SM accounts for her...

Had the same issues from nursery school all the way to secondary school. Maths makes no sense to me unless money is involved.

Eventually got to realise Math isn’t that complex. E no pass addition, subtraction, multiplication, division. Depends on the problem being solved which determines the sequence of how these basic functions are arranged to solved the problem.

I got to knowing Maths better...after leaving school. Under NO PRESSURE atmosphere.

Pls let her just pass WAEC and NECO. She should learn the one to pass Tests and Exams, especially if what she wants to study does not need mathematics.

I think it should be her opinion to choose to do what makes her happy; that's more important than deciding for her.

You are very lucky, she is still a child and at this stage, she can learn anything you want her to.
Maths is very important and she needs to be good at it, no excuse.
But you the parent needs the advice not her.
The question you should be asking yourself is, what is the best learning method for her.
You mentioned that she had a weak background in mathematics so I suggest you go back to the basics.
Go as far back as you need. Start from primary 1 mathematics if needs be. Slowly build that background and she will grow from there.
Also, set a target of 10 maths problems a day for her with a price at the end of each month she meets her goal.
Do this and come back in a year to post about her progress.

Jss1 it's still early. Just monitor her maths works and also get a private maths tutor to teach her basics.

Also more importantly,do not ignore her basic integrated science o....don't joke with her science.
