This tax reform only benefits one State and that's Lagos State. If passed every major institution will be forced covertly to relocate to Lagos. Tinubu na real thief, he knows what he is doing. 2027 is not sure for him and Seyi Tinubu will likely replace Sanwo Olu, connect the dots |

Paramount01:The northern governors have been making statements actually, they are trying to forge a common front so they are speaking through the NEF mostly, just few days ago AM DAGASHA a retired air force general of the NEF made a statement on behalf of the north, the media people certainly know those they can contact to get the real position of the north from,if efforts are not made to sincerely n openly. clear the grey areas of the tax reform bills, I'm afraid that it may eventually fail |

Do not generalize. That is the mistake being made. North north north north...name names. In the north they have so many dialects, languages, they are not all Muslims, Hausa is not their language and they have different tribes so many. Some clowns will come out toake themselves important and divide the country further by saying north says this...which north...who in the north? Mention the names of the governors or northern man or woman making himself important or trying to cause problems. Is Nnamdi kanu the East? No, no 1 man can speak for the east or a group. Do not be deceived |

NybenSBF101:dullard....I am also a northerner like u... I am I. Support of the vat .. This vat reform will stop insecurity in the North.... Northern governors will sit-up and fight insecurity... Read this explanation below ...written by fellow Nairalander From what I know of the bill, let me give you my own explanation. VAT is tax paid on finished goods/services that reach the final consumer (e.g. turkey eventually consumed, hotel bills eventually settled, construction materials eventually used), it is based on 15% of retail price. Some add it to the price that final consumers are to see and so on. Final consumers then pay the retail price plus that tax. Normally, this tax is to be remitted by the retailer. However, in Nigeria, because of some acute lack of organization in its part, it is even remitted by the manufacturers/distributors. And because of that, VAT is remitted by Lagos State (hq of the manufacturer) instead of in the various states in Nigeria and by the retailers. FG wants to better organize the VAT taxing structure, and at that, wouldn't be collected by FIRS (FG tax collector), but by each state's IRS (each state's tax collectors) instead. And further, rather than FG pooling the VAT tax revenue, and then sharing it to the states using the FAAC sharing formula, FG says the states having collected it by themselves would then take 85% of it and give the FG 15%. This is equitable, right? In almost all countries of the world, sales tax is the state's responsibility. The North opposes it for these: If your state's people are poor, and do not consume plenty things, or expensive items, or luxurious items, your state's VAT revenue would be low. Also, if your state's tax collection is inefficient or sharia no tax-bound, your state's VAT revenue would be low. So, the North believes that their people consume poorly and their VAT would be low compared to if Lagos State or River state share theirs with them for example. Also, they don't collect taxes, except maybe Kano, and even so, little compared to other ever-tax-ready states of the South, so they believe their revenue would be low compared to if the inefficient VAT'ing system still sticks. The FG continues to say that, no, eventually, there'd be benefits to those Northern states inasmuch as they encourage productivity and developments in their states, and in which increases incomes and increase consumption, hence high VAT revenue, but apparently, that seems like death sentence to some of those state's governor. With the above, I hope I have been able to explain the tax reform bill, in the simplest way. And PS: states like Ekiti state in South may also be badly affected by it, and that's the point, each state's government should also work on developments from the grassroot in order for them to reap high state revenues. 1 Like |

In respect to what you think, this Reform is done in bad faith, filled with half truths and other stuffs a Govt of propaganda is wont to do.... The devil is in the details..... Go read the full Bill. You will quickly realized it's full of bullshit. If anyone, let alone Asiwaju is serious about reforming taxes in Nigeria, VAT must not be centralized, and conglomerates with nationwide spread must not be allowed to remittances from their HQ which for obvious reasons will be from Lagos or Ogun. Companies like Coca cola whose income come from all over Nigeria should remit VAT state by state ditto alcohol companies. Then, Agriculture & Shipping should also be reformed too. States should be allowed to to pass export tax on all produces moving to other states. Should Asiwaju over looked other sectors because it doesn't favor him, his state or region? No be advantage we wan take of others, let everyone be taking advantage of everyone let's see how far the country will survive. Raph82: |

As receyas last month, December 2024. Oyo collected allocation from the FAAC account, whose income comes mainly from proceeds of Oil & Gas..... Has Oyo become an Oil Gas producing state in Nigeria? If no, then that Oyo you know, led by Makinde is a full blown parasite living off the body of it's hosts..... States producing oil Gas in Nigeria! I won't be surprised many of you don't even know the meaning of parasite.....lol Paraman: |
Re: TAX Reforms: Northerners Acting Confused, As Oyedele Speaks by Raph82(m): 5:50am On Jan 07 |
Bigkoko:Nigeria should remit vat state by state, isn't that what this reform is all about? Each state should be remitting vat based on value-added products consumed, keep 85% and remit 15% to the federal pause. Most of agric products produced in the North like beans, groundnut, maize, foodstuffs generally are sent out to other states from the North without adding any value to it. Besides, the northerners are not taxed on the basis of religion, yet they want vat money at the expense of other hardworking states. This is more of a parasitic arrangement if u may ask me. This tax reform bill will make other states like Osun, Ekiti and the northern states sit tight and think out of the box. Since this reform uproar, Ekiti has been brainstorming all along, because they know that this will affect them. 1 Like |
