Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has opened up about the internal crises within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) prior 2023 general election and currently, accusing Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, of betrayal.

He also claimed that some governors elected on the platform of the PDP were working against the party.

During a live media chat on Tuesday, March 12, 2025, Wike recounted past events that shaped his political stance, recalling his time as Rivers State governor when he resisted efforts to undermine the PDP.

“When I was governor, I saw the ruling party coming out, using Ali Modu Sheriff to fight to kill the PDP. I stood my ground, saying the PDP must survive. I did not go to the Villa — never,” Wike declared.

Wike declined to delve into the matter when asked if he agreed with former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai’s claim that the ruling party was sponsoring divisions within opposition parties.

“I don’t want to go into that; it’s El-Rufai’s view. Do I look like someone that does something out of the public?”

Addressing concerns about the PDP’s preparedness ahead of the next general election, Wike expressed scepticism, blaming some governors for the party’s woes.

“See why it would not hold; every governor is working against the party. Let them challenge me, and I will tell them one by one.”

Wike particularly accused Governor Bala Mohammed of betraying the G5 governors during a critical moment of political manoeuvring for the 2023 elections.

“Bala Mohammed was having a problem with Atiku and Co. That day, I was going to commission a lounge at the airport; when he landed, I said there was no need to come to town when I was coming to the airport. He called me. Ibrahim Adoke, the former Attorney-General was there.

“He said Atiku would kill him if Atiku wins and that we must support Asiwaju. We now organised G5 to go and pay Bala a visit in Bauchi, not knowing that he was using us to settle with Atiku. When we got there, he was happy. The next day, Tambuwal led a team to go and see Bala, and Bala abandoned us.

“That’s why I say before you hold some position, you must be a man of character. That’s why I always talk about character.”

Reiterating his stance on integrity, Wike added, “I don’t need to go to any Mallam (Herbalist) to pray for me to have character.”

Amid speculation about his loyalty to the PDP, Wike clarified that he had no intention of leaving the party.

“If I move to the APC, I’ll tell you when I’m leaving. I don’t run away from fights; I’m not leaving this party o. The governors have money, but they are not spending it on the party.”

He also criticised the Enugu State governor for failing to assert leadership in the South-East.

Wike said: “Look at the Enugu governor who wanted to be the leader of the South-East; in Anambra today, not a single person bought a ticket for the governorship. You cannot bring someone from Anambra to contest, and you say you are a zonal leader.

“I don’t care who likes me. Do you like my work? If yes, that’s fine. Forget about me. The only person that should like me is my wife, and she does.

“I don’t care about who likes me and who does not. Fubara was once my supporter, has he not changed?”

Then, the race began in earnest for three years now, reaching a frenzy with the works of the two PDP committees on zoning. The first was the Gov Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi committee on the zoning of the PDP party offices. The Ugwuanyi committee quickly told the world the committee’s assignment did not cover zoning the office of the president. Though this was true, the question is: why didn’t the Ugwuanyi committee zone the PDP chairmanship to the North without aligning it to the divide that would produce the PDP presidential flag-bearer? The second committee headed by Gov Samuel Ortom of Benue state was specifically on the zoning of the presidential ticket and, with the votes of the representatives of all the 17 Southern states without any exception, the Committee unanimously recommended throwing open the PDP presidential ticket, which the PDP NEC simply upheld.

One thing irrefutably stands out – Wike shot himself in the leg. Here was a man who had an overarching influence on both committees but could not insist that the ticket be zoned South. Many had wondered why? The reason is also relatively in plain sight: the Southeast factor. As the clamour for zoning of the presidential ticket of the PDP to South reached its crescendo, many had pointed out the fact that though the PDP Constitution had prescribed zoning of the office of the president to be between North and South since the South-west and South-south had taken their turns in producing the president and the vice in this current dispensation in the persons of Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, zoning this time around, should not just be to the South but the Southeast.

Atiku Abubakar went a step further by offering to step down from the race if it would be agreed that the touted zoning to the South would mean micro-zoning to the Southeast. Wike and the rest could not take the Atiku challenge maybe because Atiku would likely back Peter Obi, who was his vice-presidential running mate in 2019 and an ally. The prospects of Peter Obi picking the ticket if PDP zoned South was so real compelling Wike to go for an open contest, believing he could pick it up ahead of Atiku, Tambuwal and Bala Mohammed, given his large war chest.

Lagos lawyer and counsel to the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Festus Keyamo says nothing would stop the House from probing allegations of financial misappropriation against Governor Babatunde Fashola.

He called on the governor to submit himself to probe in order to clear himself, saying there was no hiding through court injunction to dodge the probe against him.

The State House of Assembly had yesterday set up a fresh 7-member committee to probe allegations against the governor by the True Face of Lagos, which staged a protest to the House recently to demand probe of the governor.

Speaking with P.M.NEWS this morning, Keyamo said that the governor should be probed, adding that the accolades the governor received in the media should not divert attention from the real thing.

“Every public officer has a duty to give account of stewardship no matter the height of praise singing he receives from the press. The office you are occupying is not your father’s property but the public.

“Probe is not the same thing as verdict of guilt, but an opportunity for one to clear himself. If Fashola believes his hands are clean, now is the opportunity for him to shine,” he stated.

According to him, “Fashola should take the path of honour and clear himself of the allegations. He can’t continue to hide under court injunction.

“If you say you plant grass and flower, come and tell the people how much you spent in planting them, tell them how you spent their money because it is not your father’s money.

“The House must go ahead with the probe because it is their constitutional and moral duty to do what they want to do. They have now properly published the allegations in their official journal.”

Comrade Bamidele Aturu, who was counsel to Mr. Richard Akinola, the man who first went to court to stop the House from probing the governor, said “we will assess our legal option and deal with the issue.”

Aturu stated that if the House erred in setting up the new committee, it would be challenged in the court, saying that “we are for democracy and probity.”

Also, Majority Leader, Lagos Assembly, Hon. Kolawole Taiwo said the House had already published the allegations in the Assembly’s journal, saying that the House would go ahead with the probe.
