I got a little confused on the right place to open this thread..
From my own view, it is significant in both career and education categories
So I’d leave it for you guys to decide on how you want to relate with this thread….

If you are a Geoscientist (Geologist/Geophysicist), Engineer (Petroleum/Reservoir) then you are on to the right place
I am a geologist, a reservoir geoscientist in practice…
This thread is directed to reach out to all those in practice and those aspiring to get into the industry
So if you are a 100 Level student of any of these disciplines, you are still in the right place…
Here, I hope with the help of my fellow seasoned & experienced professionals in the industry, will help
grow this thread… providing answers to some questions and sharing ideas, ebooks, softwares etc…

As a sign of good faith, I’d be sharing one of my most priceless books
“Reservoir & Production Fundamentals”
I cannot overemphasis the relevance of this book

It would be up for download for a short period of time
After which, I’d bring down the download link…
If you have got questions, feel free to ask…

Good to have you all on board...

I need just few more people following, then i drop the download link for the first item i'd be giving out

“Reservoir & Production Fundamentals”

It won't be a bad idea introducing yourself...

A brief introduction will suffice...

So we can get more familiar with ourselves...

Thanks in advance!

I had a telephone-convo with an old friend of mine who was doing her industry training few years ago. She a geophysicist from one for the prestigious federal technical universities. I was heart broken when she told me she had accepted defeat and resolved to teaching in secondary school since she was unable to secure employment in the oil industry. One of the highlight of her decision was her not being able to finish with a second class upper. I managed to have a brief talk with her to uplift and motivate her spirit.

Now here is the gist;

One thing you guys need to understand about securing a place into the oil industry is that its not just about connections exclusively. First it takes the Grace of God, then the following Six (6).

1. Packaging.
Let me throw a little more emphasis on packaging. When I say packaging, I mean acquiring skillsets and developing yourself so that you can fit into atleast an entry level profile of some MNCs (Multinational companies) or LCOs (Local Content Operators). Some of the skillsets you'd need is - Ability to Read, Understand and Write. It may sound ridiculous, but its a challenge to many. You'll need this when your are required to prepared a technical report. If you already have this skill, put it there in your resume. Technical reports are very essential during different milestones in the industry. You don't need to be gainfully employed before you know how to write one. Google it or ask friends that work in the industry to school you on how to write one.

2. Learn An Industry Software.
The most widely used and promising of these is schlumberger's Seismic To Simulation software, PETREL. You don't have to register to SLB NexT courses before having hands-on experience with petrel. Even here on Nairaland, our fellow Nairalander offers these courses at a relatively low price, contrary to the exorbitant amount being charged by SLB. Though they give you value for your money I must say. Some of them (Nairalanders) are even magnanimous enough to give a copy of Millions of Naira one user licence software for free or little token (Although e dey illegal oh). With this, its creates an avenue for you to have a hands-on experience with this software at the comfort of your home. For those that already have this software, in the near future I'd drop a link to where you can get the 2010 petrel manual and tutorials to help you speed up you self-training, including a training data. Asides petrel, there are other very good industry software. But from my own assessment, petrel is more widely use. Also, techlog for petrophysical analysis.

3. Go for your Masters
The importance of Msc in a geoscience related course cannot be over-emphasized. No MNC will want to listen to you if you are seeking entry or trust your judgement fully if you are already in without have a second higher degree. You don't have to wait to completely finish you Msc program before looking for a slot to the oil industry. Once you program is in view, its good enough for some company who would gladly employ you. From there you can build your career.

Upload a decent picture of youself. Most companies overseas always like a visual image of whom they wish to connect with or contact. No lies or falsification!

5. Engage In Research Projects
For those that think going for ones masters is a luxury, try carrying out research. Write technical papers. I have a friend who was hired recently without a masters, but has lots of published research papers to his credit. During the course of his interview, after any statement he makes that is related to the question being asked, he refers them to his paper saying he has carried out a research in that area. They were marveled. You won't believe the offer they made him if I tell you. His research and self-development was his selling point to that company that eventually hired him.

Lastly,

Sorry peeps... I've been very busy. Hopefully, you should hear from me this week as regards my regular uploads.

But in the meantime, Do we have any stratigrapher ready made or wannabe in the house?

Please I wanna make things clear here. This thread isn't a place to come pick up something and leave. I'm very sure I'm not the only geoscientist in this forum. You don't have to be in practice before you have something to contribute. The objective of this thread is majorly development. I no sabi everything! We can learn a thing or two from each other. I've got a lot to give, but I'm not motivated! Make una try shake body small. For those that downloaded some of the books I've uploaded, try to acknowledge or share with us in the house what you discovered, read or don't comprehend. Even a little thank you would suffice. Please oh!

SEQUENCE STRATIGTAPHY!

The above used to be my most dreaded area in geology back in school...
I recall sometime in the past when i just joined the industry...
I was an active seismic interpreter and geomodeler in practice..
I knew the whole workflow to get a job done...
I could used any software to deliver what ever you wanted to see...
But I was lacking in an aspect..
Which was getting the concept on why we do some of the things we do..
How to troubleshoot when anomaly or challenges arises...
All these can only be answered if one understands his basic geology/geophysics
I flunked my interview!!

Most of the questions asked where centered on Environment of Deposition, Sequence Stratigraphy,
Basin analysis, Fault analysis and so on... 10% was on seismic interpretation (na for only here i manage shine small)... 2% was on software usage and proficiency...

No one needed to tell me to go back to my roots and READ!!!
That's why I've been so passionate in establishing than younger geoscientists get enlightened thru reading...
A question can come from anywhere...
Even though they may specify the position that is being opened..

As a geoscientist, you need to be conversant in both geology and geophysics..
Groom yourself into an integrated geoscientist...
Your market value no go be in Naira...
READ & RESEARCH!!

Most of what we do is reservoir studies.. All of which is being carried out be a team of integrated professionals
Ranging from a Petrophysicist who analyses the logs >> Seismic Interpreter who interprets the Seismic Section (either 2D or 3D) and produce surfaces>> A Geomodeler who creates static models for all reservoir levels of interest and finally to a Reservoir Engineer who carry out simulation/dynamic modeling...

What kills many of us is the mentality of "this is my area of specialization" It wont kill you to have an idea of what is being done in other disciplines. I cannot over-emphasis to relevance of reading or having good books to make references. And asking questions. Abeg una! If you are a follower of this thread, take it seriously. I don't know how far i'd be able to keep up with it.

The books i'd b be sharing today are centered around sequence stratigraphy. It was given to me by a Ph.D holder in sequence stratigraphy. He called it one of the key essentials for every sequence stratigrapher and wannabees. If una see the folder within folders, within folders wey this oga comot this ebook (Principles Of Sequence Stratigraphy) from, fear start to dey catch me. I Thought it was a confidential document on national security.

I have put these books (they are three in number) into a compressed folder and uploaded to dropbox. Will be sharing the link shortly.

This time around, I have decided not to make the download link expire or bring it down in any other form, except i see the need too. But instead, I have chosen to password the file. Any interested persons sld PM me for the password.

DON'T DROP YOUR EMAILS!!!

Enjoy Now, Thank Me Later!

hello mr ifoundmyperfect, am a final year undergraduate of geology...presently writing my final exams. I must say u are doing a great job here, esp for young undergraduates like myself. Thank u. I remember doing a seminar on the topic ''the applications of micro-paleontology in sequence stratigraphy''. Honestly my flop was painfully remarking! Infact i shaked and stuttered throughout the session of the presentation! Stratigraphy and paleontology are two branches of geology that most geology students find very challenging.

Sorry about how your presentation went...
All na part of training...
Many of us are guilty of stage fright...
No matter how bold or confident we may claim..
With time you'd get better...
You can't run away from presentation...

U may check online, der r excellent guides on how to deliver a good presentation without shaking or stuttering much...

Nice Idea Mr OP.
I'm a graduate of Geoinformatics and Surveying and currently undergoing ESRI ArcGIS software training!
I know it's quite distant from geology proper but they all deal with spatial analysis and modelling. I intend enrolling into some PETREL classes as soon as I'm through with ArcGIS.
Can you recommend a good training firm around? Thanks bro
