I think an independent woman is a woman who has her own source of income, and doesn't depend on her partner fully but is not ashamed to ask for help when she needs it. This also means that she is willing and happy to help her partner when the time comes.
freecocoa:
So I created this thread to get better views on who/what people think/believe an independent woman is/should be. A lady (firstEva) talked about her boyfriend having two cars yet she has to 'trek' about town, asking if it isn't selfish of him not to give her one, now I see nothing wrong in her wanting to share her boyfriend's car, only thing is, she didn't ask but almost everyone sounded like she committed a heinous crime for even just harboring the thought of ever using his car, shior! shocked.

I believe an independent woman is one who can take care of herself but that doesn't mean she can't ask her man for stuffs when she needs it and ofcourse he gets to do same.

I'm only asking because from what I read yesterday, people sounded like an Independent woman is one who doesn't ask her man for anything whatsoever, I come dey wonder, if I can share my body, my time, my brain, my energy etc with my man, what then is a 'ducking' car?

Uhhh I'd say boyfriends are tilted more towards the husband axis, than friends.

But some of you find it difficult to believe girlfriends are tilted towards the wife axis, than just friends.

An independent woman is a fallacy just like romantic love is.

No wwoman is totally independentcheesy

As for that car issue...its no biggie buying your girlfriend a car if u worth it and if the girl deserves/worth it.

And a girl that worths buying a car doesn't ask...it comes to her as a surprise gift...the ones that ask for gifts and favours are diamond diggers, greedy ladies and those with insatiable needs.

So the problem isn't the car or what to give but the intention or motive of the lady asking for such gifts/favours.

Independence is a mindset, a way of life, an idea ... the mistake most people make is to think that Independence only or simply revolves around not depending on other for anything. That's not true because the reason is in as much as you are human, you would one way or the other depend on people for something ... we are not wired to thrive in Isolation.

In light of this I think an independent woman is a woman who knows what wants she wants out of life, has a clear cut goal and plan for the future and thus pursues them with vigour and zeal, she is not easily swayed by peoples opinion. because she has learnt to own her voice and is bold enough to stand on her beliefs.

She never let's anyone or situation to put her to ransom, Most importantly She takes full responsibility over her life, her actions, inaction, her wellbeing and survival. She understand that she not entitled to anything unless she's worked for it. She is hardworking and self reliant

A woman with the above attribute would not be thinking of asking her boyfriend to give her his car because he has two cars and she is trekking ... Instead she would be thinking about how she can get her own car, and if she needs her boyfriend's car the reason she would give would be more solid and well thought out.

For example, She would ask in this manner ... Please can I use your other car for a while most especially during the weekdays so as to offset my immense transportation cost to and fro from work. I have taking driving lessons and my driving skills are quite good... Moreover I would take full responsibility of fueling the car, and its maintenance during this period. I would also ensure its well taking care of and readily at your disposal whenever you need it.

This tone of request is more proper and does not carry or suggest a sense of entitlement ... but portrays her as a woman who has a sense of responsibility. and even if he reject her request she would not be pissed ... because she knows it only a matter of time her own car would arrive

Oh really? You depend on fellow men to be your wife/girlfriend and give you everything that comes with the territory?14 years dey wait you o grin, even if you are gay, you still depend on your partner.

The point I'm trying to make is that, men and women depend on each other, it is only when money's involved that you hear men screaming blue murder.

An independent woman does not complain if her bf decides not to help her.
An independent woman is not a liability.

Hmmm

I hope an independent man doesn't complain when his gf does not help either

I think I go with UjSizzle on this

No one is truly independent; we are more of interdependent and dependent

Anyway independent woman is one who makes things happen by herself

One who can think like the head act like the head but can't be the head.. ..... And understand her limitations

There goes the main crux of the problem.
A relationship is something you can easily get into and out of as you so wish
A legal union isn't, so priviledges and rights in both are greatly different as they should

Most young people get their knickers twisted because they simply misunderstand that simple fact. A bf is never going to be responsible for you, that job is reserved for your husband
But legal unions are only a means of furthering already existing relationships. I say relationships are test runs for marriage.
Re: How Do You Define An Independent Woman?. by justmag(m): 1:32pm On Nov 08, 2014
An independent woman is a woman who has a mentality of doing things on their own. They are go getters! They have their eyes set at the top. An independent woman could care less about people opinions but HATES when ppl misunderstand her and think she needs a man to get to the top or fears giving people the impression that a man is her meal ticket! An independent will have a back and forth argument with u on a date when it comes to paying for a movie ticket, resturant bills or any payment during a date! An independent woman will offer to pay for stuff among their peers and not just city back and wait to be taken care of. An independent woman is worried about being broke! An independent woman sees no pride in getting money. She is out there getting money by any means except selling her self short! An independent woman always keeps a great hustling story to tell about her journey and how much she has done for herself! An independent woman always has a strong drive even if she is not where she wants to be! An independent woman maybe unemployed but she is out there looking for a job or a business and not just sitting around waiting for hand outs. An independent woman shud be every man's dream woman even though most men are intimidated by her because they fear she cud wear the trouser in the relationship but a real man will take inspiration from her.

lol, sure u are right. And I don't have problem with showering the lucky woman with gifts and money if need be, what I hate most is forming madam independent and feminist on top a man's moneycheesy

Men enjoy spending on women in their life (mother, sister, nieces, girlfriend, wife) but it is women that are now giving men a reason to complain, withdraw from giving women any form of help and become stingy towards women; men weren't like that some years ago if u can be honest.

Let our ladies go back to d good old times and I bet u that men will become their maga! If u want a man to be your maga, u must be ready to act like a fool. You can't be forming too wise a woman and still expect men to be your maga, mbagrin

Nice topic @op...An independent woman in my opinion is 1 dat can take care of her needs without the help of a man financially...so she doesn't need a man 2 eat or buy clothes or make her hair or provide shelter...men are usually scared of dis type of women....bt in terms of companionship, physical, mental n otherwise evry woman needs a man n vice versa...nice 1 @op

Which type of asset adds no monetary value?
And herein lies our problem: Limiting people to only the financial benefits they avail us. Humans aren't capital expenditures, they are people with varying strengths. If you really buy into what you've just said now, then why shouldn't a woman stay interested in only men who have monetary worth? Why do men feel so bad when she leaves for lack of financial gain? Does it make the man a liability too?

You need to stop limiting yourself to certain things. If as a woman my major interest in a man was that he met my emotional needs, then his financial abilities would only serve as a plus. If he is unable to meet that need for whatever reason, save for providing money, then he is of no use to me. This is why I say no woman is a liability; you just haven't identified her as the sort of asset you need.

'Sharing my body.' Some people still think sex is a 'favour.' Giving things to ur lady is manly, but when you see it as his 'compulsory' responsibility, cos religion and tradition supports it, then you are simply a whöre. angry
