Nigerian Pastors Fleece Believers USA-Style: Bishop David Oyedepo Owns a Gulfstream Jet and Several BMWs

October 16, 2014 by Terry Firma

Nigeria has long been known as the home country of countless Internet scammers, but Reuters reminds us that some of the country’s megachurch pastors have devised their own get-rich-quick schemes modeled after shining U.S. examples like Benny Hinn, Paul Crouch, and Jim Bakker.

Some of the churches can hold more than 200,000 worshippers and, with their attendant business empires, they constitute a significant section of the economy, employing tens of thousands of people and raking in tourist dollars, as well as exporting Christianity globally. …

[TB] Joshua draws miracle-seekers from all over the world with claims that the holy water he has blessed cures otherwise incurable ailments such as HIV/AIDS.

And Ebola!

We see giving as the only way to be blessed. Blessing other people is a way of keeping the blessings flowing,” said [David] Oyedepo (pictured), whose blessings include a Gulfstream V jet and several BMWs.

The untaxed prosperity and typical lack of accountability are ruffling some feathers.

“They don’t submit accounts to anybody,” says Bismarck Rewane, economist and CEO of Lagos consultancy Financial Derivatives. “At least six church leaders have private jets, so they have money. How much? No one really knows.” … As the churches have charity status, they have no obligation to open their books, and certainly don’t have to fill in tax returns — an exemption that is increasingly controversial in Nigeria, where poverty remains pervasive despite the oil riches.

The pastors argue their charity work should exempt them. “We use the income of the church to build schools, we use the income of the church to serve the needs of the poor,” David Oyedepo, bishop of the popular Winners Chapel, told Reuters in an interview. “These are non-profit organizations.”

In a country where the average worker pulls in about ten dollars a day, Nigeria’s megachurch pastors are financially fortunate indeed.

In 2011, Forbes magazine estimated the fortunes of Nigeria’s five richest pastors. Oyedepo topped the list, with an estimated net worth of $150 million. He was followed by “Pastor Chris” Oyakhilome of Believers’ LoveWorld Incorporated, also known as the Christ Embassy and popular with executives and politicians, [who has] $30 million to $50 million.

A former banker at Nigeria’s United Bank for Africa, who declined to be named, recalled being approached five years ago by a church that was bringing in $5 million a week [$260 million a year] from contributions at home or abroad. “They wanted to make some pretty big investments: real estate, shares,” he said. “They wanted to issue a bond to borrow, and then use the weekly flows to pay the coupon.” In the end, he said, the bank turned down the proposal on ethical grounds.

Nothing about this obscene wealth-generating machine will change anytime soon.

A national conference to debate Nigeria’s constitution this year proposed that the megachurches should be taxed. But with an election coming up in February, it is debatable whether President Goodluck Jonathan, who is close to several megapastors, would risk upsetting these influential men and their hefty congregations with a fat tax bill.

Neighboring Cameroon, at least, isn’t quite so reluctant. As I wrote a half a year ago, Cameroon’s government has been closing prosperity-gospel churches that “rip off vulnerable people” and are therefore deemed “harmful to society.”

Lmao...you actually think you're more "Christian" than a country that started Protestantism, which Pentecostalism branched out from. The same country that wrote the King James Version of the Bible, no?

Keep fooling yourself...these folks just see African pulpit pimps for the frauds they're. They know most of them, including the sheeple like you, don't understand the origins and the purpose of the religion. However, they will never let you flip it, and use it as a tool to steal from, or abuse folks out here. That is an unacceptable behaviour. Keep ya religion and chasing witchcraft (medieval tripe) in Africa.

They have already given you lot enough space to keep lying to yourselves in the naija community. What else do you want? Want to spread ya tentacles to schools no one asked for, or start competing with the Church of England?

The truth will always emerge. After all the rigmarole the last line says what its really all about. Fear of competition. Period. The Communist Party will do it in China, even the orthodox church in Russia. They attack the individual but what they really fear and target is the ideology, dynamic pentecostalism. It is a real and emerging threat globally to atheism and old order religious establishments.

What. I am saying is that.. You look at the homosexuals as evil..well nigerians are more evil at heart .. A lot of same se people even contribute more to the economy than the people accusing them and being straight. Land of hyprocrities
WHO SAYS NIGERIANS ARE SAINT, HOW DOES THIS ADD TO THE DEBATE. THE DEBATE IS THE WESTERN COUNTRIES SHOULD ALLOW EVERY OTHER COUNTRY PRACTICE THEIR LAWS AND RESPECT THEIR CULTURES ... THATS HUMAN RIGHT , NOT FORCING THEIR LAWS ON SOME OTHER ONES. THEY SEE NOTHING WRONG IN THEIR LAWS BUT ARE QUICK TO PUT SANCTIONS ON ANY COUNTRY THAT REFUSES THEIR LAWS ... IS THAT NOT WORST THAN SLAPPING A " SELF CLAIMED WITCH" . BRO , MAJORITY EMBRACE THESE LAWS BECAUSE THEY DO NOT BELIEVE IN THEMSELVES AND HAVE SEEN THEMSELVES AS A LESSER BEING.

This is the most sensible comment I've seen so far.
No one is even saying anything about d girl that was abused in front of thousands, instead they are all throwing verbal missiles and baring their ignorance. Smh for we blacks.

Even d topic of d thread is very misleading and d gullible brain-washed ones are here defending d pastor and raining abuses on BBC. The OP just used a catchy headline (purposely or out of ignorance) to attract readers and those who cannot read btw d lines are exposing their level of dumbfuckery.

U gullible nigerians need to understand that d mentality of d average westerner is far different from that of a nigerian. U don't just physically abuse a vulnerable girl in front of thousands. They don't take that kinda bullshittt. Westerners are far more intellectually enlightened than many mentally enslaved brainless nigerians who cannot think for themselves. The UK frowns on a church that espouses belief in witchcraft as one of its basic tenets; not just mere belief but carrying out actions that are contrary to reason, human conscience and d legal system.

A lot of d inhumane treatment we mete out to people all in d name of "witchcraft suspicion" can only happen here because of our low mentality.

Here in Nigeria (and other low-mentality african countries), people can be brutalized, beaten to death or even burnt alive because some imbeciles think they're witches/wizards. Wtf!
Here in Nigeria, u'll see some kids being starved or detained in churches, whipped and harassed until they confess to being witches. If a family brings a child (to be used as househelps of course) from d village to town and anything dares go wrong in d family, aha! Na winch oooooo!
If an old woman looks at u in funny way, she's a witch. Here in naija, people will construct kiosks and call them churches. In one street alone u can see up to 20 churches all blaring unbearable noise from their giant speakers and when u complain of d noise, u're a witch or agent of satan. In a compound where u're not d only tenant, u'll host noisy casting n binding prayer sessions and if another tenant dares complain, na winch. Naija is a lawless entity with little regards for d social/physical/psychological welfare of its citizens and that's why all these nonsense can happen with no one giving a fuqq.

A western pastor/priest/man of God cannot try that nonsense that Oyedepo did. He did that because he has d mentality of a typical Nigerian. Some of u who support anything done by anyone who brands himself as a man of God need to realize that its d westerners that brought this same Christianity to us and they are not all immoral/irreligious atheists.
SINCE YOU BELIEVE SO MUCH IN THE WESTERNER AND THE BLACKS ARER MENTALLY ENSLAVED LIKE YOU SAID .... HAVE YOU BOTHERED TO ASK YOURSELF WHY THESE COUNTRIES YOU PRAISE ARE VERY QUICK TO SANCTION ANY COUNTRY THAT OPPOSED THEIR LAWS. IF THEY WERE MENTALLY SOUND AS YOU CLAIM , WOULD THEY HAVE TAKEN A BLACK MAN AS SLAVE BEFORE NOW. IF THEY SO MUCH LOVE THE HUMAN RACE , WOULD RACISM STILL EXIST. WAKE UP ... YOU ARE AFRICAN , YOU ARE AFRICAN ..... YOUR THINKING IS WHAT MAKES YOU DIFFERENT , STOP TRYING TO UPGRADE YOUR THINKING TO THAT OF A WHITE MAN . MAKE SOMETHING OUT OF YOUR THINKING LIKE THEY MADE SOMETHING OUT OF THEIRS

And what has happened to the church where HUNDREDS of sexual abuse cases involving minors lasting decades and only being revealed lately globally including by British based priests. Who is serving time. Which church has been penalised, barred or has its permit to run schools revoked. None. Why. Because it is the establishment church. This on the other hand is a foreign invader.

Full gospel pentecostalism does not sit with the topic of witchcraft. Certainly it is out there but what is being referred to here is scriptural. Disobedience 'is as' grave as the practice of witchcraft. Oyedepo did not write that. King James did.

Pentecostalism isn't a threat to the traditional Churches cos no matter their reach, they're not part of the state. So basically they have no power apart from the self-anointed Pastors who are just out there to enrich themselves, at the expense of the gullible folks.

The witchcraft thing is just so medieval, and most of the traditional Churches stopped it from the mid-century to the like 18th century. So why are Pentecostal Churches so big on it now? Also, the miracle thing is just make-believe. How many times has Derren Brown exposed all these African miracle pastors on channel 4? Folks can see through the fraud.

Can Anyone please Tell me The Reward of A Born again Christian Is it to be wealthy on Earth or To Make Heaven......

Both. The full gospel makes it clear. 'brethren, I wish.... that thou prosper and be in health even as thy soul prospers'. Practically speaking Abraham was acknowledged to be in the bosom of God. Before he died Abraham was exceedingly rich materially. Read Genesis 12 forward. The key here is not to let material stuff master and rule you. God tested Abraham and found he was willing to let go. That is the right attitude. Our wealth is meant to serve the needs, to bless others.

But take this from me today. If you 'walk' with God you will become extremely rich whether you like it or not. The problem is always us, our mentality, our reliability, our objectivity. God gives abundantly. I am a witness. I hardly preach, I am not a pastor. I just do what he says and he blesses me. So its not a matter of one person scamming the other. Most of what I have I never ask for and I don't buy much but I just get a lot of stuff....and I'm not that friendly either. God is real.

I'm not concerned abt BBC, they wld say anytin to sell news.

I'm more concerned abt people who take advantage of others, trample on their rights, take the little they have, in the name of Christ who washed his disciples feet, pray for his killers, gave to the poor, went abt teaching, healing, loving. Yes, he talked of treasures in heaven.
According to the bible they preach, he told people to take up their cross (not jets), he didn't amass wealth, neither did Paul, Peter, or John.
