He might be a political bigwig in the country but in his residence in Lagos, Mr. Jude Emeka Idimogu is a philan thropist with a distinction, a humble man to a fault. He has decided to contest for Lagos State Assem bly under the umbrella of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Oshodi- Isolo Constituency. He is from Imo State but has lived in Lagos for long, hence the decision for aspiring to be a legislator in the state. In this inter view, he speaks on various issues. Excerpts:

What prompted your aspiration to run for Lagos State Assembly?

I want to serve my community. They are in pain, all our representatives have failed to hear our cry. We are being deprived of a lot of things. It’s not the wherewithal but sometimes the will to do it; some of our representatives are so bad one can weep for us. But, by the special grace of God, if God gives me all the possibility to be there, I believe I will change lives positively for people. My lifestyle will make other politi cians, who have been there before to have a re-think to understand that being there is to serve humanity and to serve God.

Don’t you think to serve your com munity, there is no much to do from Lagos House of Assembly?

For now I want to take it from the grass roots; so I have decided to go for the Lagos House of Assembly from the grassroots; then from there, depending on how it goes, I will move forward. But for now, there is much to be done for this constituency, if you look at Oshodi/Isolo community, it will disgust you. Our roads are so bad that and is the major thing. The road is bad and the gridlock too much.

The many hours we lose in traffic is so much and these are the things I wonder and I look at it and weep. When you ask the representatives about the road, they will tell you it is federal road and state road. What’s the meaning of that? We are the people that use it, not the Federal or state government. These roads are meant for me and the people of our community, so most times, no matter how good your car is and you are taking bad roads, there is no way your car will not have problem and at the end of the day, you will go and visit the mechanic. When you look at the cost you incur on the road and because of the problem, your car will develop inconvenience and a lot of time is wasted.

All these will spur disgust for the area. Investors will avoid our area. Yet our cost of living is high like every Lagosian but not enjoying same benefits. It’s not good enough for me. If we are exactly patriotic, it is not necessary that you tar the road; you may not really have money but you can find granite and level the road pending the time help comes from the federal or state govern ment. As long as those in federal and state governments are also human beings, when they see that you have started to proffer a miniature solution to it, they will be urged to come with standard solution. They will feel ashamed that the people or community are challenging them. Before you know it, the help will come sooner than later.

Why do you think your representa tives have not tried to help the com munity?

Our representative is a-one man army. They think they can do it alone. They have forgotten that lobbying is politics. When you are in politics, you lobby because it is not you alone in the State House of Assem bly. You are to be closer to other members and when you have your problem, you table it and lobby every member, including the speaker that your own needs are more important than others. They will allow you to have your way, depending on how you relate with others there. Everything is about relationship and lobbying and before you know it, you will gain more stability and what you want for your community and that is your bottom line.

There is a popular belief that Nigerian politics is about money and godfatherism. How do you see it?

For now, money partially runs politics in Nigeria. For me, my godfather is God. You must also have people that have been there before you, even in terms of money. They can encourage you, advise you and also help to give you a soft landing and to direct you. In everything, even in the world of politics, we have people that you naturally want them to direct you. You may call them god fathers but in Nigeria, the godfathers that are being talked about are your financiers. If it is a godfather who finances me, I don’t have one. From experience, godfathers are people who will direct you the right way to follow, guide you towards success. Politics is an ideology that needs guidance. So, there is need for an advisor, not a financier. You know you can’t do it alone, you need elders around you; elders that will speak on your behalf to their associates and acquaintances. Such elders you come across by doing good and being hardworking. When they have seen your quality and your determination to really serve for the benefits of the people, you will definitely have it.

Why did you decide to run under the PDP umbrella?

For today, I represent PDP and the reasons are that PDP controls the centre and because All Progressives Congress (APC) has failed my constituency. The only way for me to make impact is from the opposition. I believe that PDP will make an impact in Lagos State in 2015. Among the people the APC has failed are the Igbo. The Igbo have been suffering under APC. They have been molested. In the history of the world, it was in Nigeria that a governor of a state decided to deport indigenes of another state.

Do you think you as an Igbo man will get your party’s mandate to con test in the main election?

I don’t have a doubt. The problem we have in Nigerian politics is empty promises but I am happy after all that things are gradu ally changing; people are asking questions. I don’t need to be boastful, people have started asking questions; who is that person, what is he made of? For us to move forward, if I get my party’s mandate, I will make it. I am not saying I will make it alone; a tree cannot make a forest. Most people say I am not part of them, yet, I am married to a beautiful wife from Yoruba land. What more do they need? I am the only son of my parents; despite that, I was allowed to marry my heartthrob be cause I love her even though I had ambition to do politics in my hometown but suddenly my mind changed. I felt a stint in Lagos; I have lived in Lagos for the past 30 years and besides, we are all Nigerians and not only that, my wife is a daughter of the tribe. We need to forget tribal boundaries to move this country forward.

ABIA, EBONYI GOVERNORS COLOSSAL FAILURES - NUF
A group, Ndigbo Unity Forum (NUF), has said
Governors Theodore Orji and Martin Elechi of Abia and
Ebonyi states respectively have failed in the discharge
of their duties as governors.
The group in a statement jointly signed by Messrs
Augustine Chukwudum and Chinedu Onyebuchi,
president and secretary general respectively, urged the
governors to forget their senatorial ambitions in next
year’s general elections.
The statement read in part: “Based on the assessment
of performances of the five South-East governors, we
unanimously agreed that Governors Theodore Orji and
Martin Elechi of Abia and Ebonyi states respectively
have failed woefully. We also condemn the invasion of
the National Assembly by the police on the order of the
Presidency.”
Commending the Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie
Obiano, for ensuring the security of lives and property
in Anambra State, the group also commended Enugu
State Governor, Sullivan Chime for making
infrastructure development a priority in the state, and
Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State for his free
education programme.
The NUF said after weighing several factors, it had ad
opted Okorocha as its sole candidate for the 2015
presidential election, saying it believed that the Imo
governor’s candidacy “will assure the Igbo that they
have fully been integrated into the Nigeria project after
the civil war.
“Rochas has proven through his numerous
contributions as a private citizen that he is a
detribalized Nigerian. Rochas through his Owelle
Foundation has shown that he understands the plight
of the common man in the street. Rochas has also
proven through his performances and achievement as
a governor in Nigeria that he has in-depth knowledge
of how the Nigeria systems work.
“We call on all Igbo to give their unalloyed support to
Rochas. We call on all patriotic Nigerians that are for
equity and fairness to ensure that they use their voting
rights in voting Rochas. We call on all religious leaders,
traditional rulers and other stakeholders in the country
to sensitize their people on the importance of working
for the emergence of Rochas as the president of the
country.
“We called for the immediate sack of the inspector
general of police over his desecration of the nation’s
sacred institutions,” the statement added.

Delta, Imo Emerge Winners of NNPC/MPN STAN Science Quiz

August 29, 2014

Delta and Imo states have emerged winners of the 2014 NNPC/MPN Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) National Science Quiz Competition in the primary and secondary school categories respectively. The competition took place in Asaba, Delta State.

In the primary school category, Delta state represented by Enameguono Aroesiri and Adarerhi Efere of DSC Model Primary School 3 Orhuwhorun, Aladja garnered a total of 106.25 points to defeat Imo (105), Osun (92.27) and Benue (90) who came second, third and fourth respectively.

Imo fought back spiritedly in a keenly-contested secondary school category. Adolalom Obinna of Living Word Academy Secondary School, Nkwerre and Ononiwu Benjamin of Alvana Model Secondary School, Nkwerre, who represented the state, amassed 112 points to narrowly edge out Akwa Ibom (111), Enugu (110) and Ondo (107).

The secondary school winners were rewarded with a cash prize of N200,000, second position got N100,000 while the 3rd place got N50,000. In the primary school category, the winners received N100,000 while 2nd position got N50,000.

Speaking during the presentation of the prizes to the winners, Mr Paul Arinze, General Manager, Public and Government Affairs, Mobil Producing Nigeria (MPN) said the sponsorship of the competition in the last 19 years by MPN was a demonstration of her commitment to the development of the youth and the future of the country.

He said: “Through the platform of STAN, MPN and its joint venture partner, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), have consistently sponsored the National Science Quiz/Project competition in the last 19 years.

“By supporting education, especially science, mathematics and technology education, we are making an investment in our future by establishing the next generation of science professionals and equipping them with a strong foundation for the future.”

Arinze further admonished the students to imbibe the culture of discipline, hard work, focus and courage, adding that achieving success would be difficult without those qualities.

While expressing his appreciation to both NNPC and MPN for the sponsorship, the STAN President, Dr. Amos Cirfat, stated that the lengthy support of the programme was a rare feat in Nigeria. “Mobil Producing Nigeria deserves commendation for her sponsorship of the STAN competition for almost two decades. It’s not common having a corporate body throwing her weight behind a project like this for such a long period of time. This sponsorship has helped STAN fulfil some of her objectives. We are deeply grateful.”

The NNPC/MPN STAN National Science Quiz Competition is an annual event organised by the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN) as part of activities marking its annual National Conference. Students, both in the primary and secondary schools, across the country participate in the quiz and project competitions.

Imo and the relevance of opposition
in a democracy
By Bede Felix Ejimadu
Driving from Lagos to the Eastern part of Nigeria, one will
cross three states: Ogun, Ondo and Edo, where you observe
the impact of governance. To say the truth, some of these
states belong to the opposition party, All Progressives
Congress (APC). There is no doubt that democracy without
adequate or good opposition is like a family without a
sensible husband or wife.
I have not been privileged to visit other opposition states
in the North but from the view of the states above, there
are tremendous achievements. Going further down to
Asaba, Delta State, to Onitsha, Anambra State, one beholds
a clear picture of democracy dividends, as reflected in the
improved state of infrastructural facilities.
The performance of the current Imo state Governor, Owelle
Anayo Rochas Okorocha, is absolutely clear. I couldn’t
conceal my joy as I arrived Assumpta Catholic Cathedral
junction, Owerri Imo State from Onitsha, having endured
the torturous hours in a bus all day from Lagos.
The magnificent structures erected around Amakoha,
Akwakuma, Orlu road enroute Government House Owerri
and the surroundings have turned the capital city, called
the “Heartland” to a delightful land. I am not writing this
to praise the APC or denigrate the former party that ruled
the state but merely to state the fact. When I look at the
rapid development of the state, with improved
infrastructure for the citizens, I couldn’t hide my
admiration for Owelle Rochas Okorocha, the “Obi ndi Igbo”
of Igboland.
I came to realise that Okorocha also belongs to the
opposition party, APC. I now asked myself, if Rochas is in
the former ruling party, would he leave such an impressive
mark within his first tenure? If he had allied with the
former party in the state, would he not continue to
patronize the powers that be in Imo State, dancing to their
whims and caprices to retain his office.
Will he not be a regular attendant to “Iri ji” and so many
other cultural festival ceremonies that are only designed to
service the greed of the “ Agada gbachiri uzos ” and party
chieftain instead of concentrating on the projects that
would have a direct impact on the people?
I belong to the class of those that acknowledge good
performance and there is no hiding the fact that Okorocha
has done well for Imo State. That Imo State is rated as a
peaceful state and also ranked among the best in terms of
infrastructure and free education policy is no longer news.
From the primary school to the university level, the state
made education free for all. This is a remarkable feat
achieved by the Okorocha administration, a legacy that
must be passed to future generations.
Perhaps, being in opposition party gave Okorocha the
courage to act differently in the interest of his people. He
rejected the usual nature of his predecessors who believed
that whence they have clinched the throne, it is business
as usual until the expiration of their tenure. They tend to
sweep Imo State under their foot, milking the economic life
of the state dry at the collective misery and detriment of
the poor masses. With Okorocha, old things have passed
away. It is a new political chapter, where leadership is
defined as service to the people.
Relief has come to Imo people through this amiable
governor who defied the zoning formula in Imo State to
clinch the exalted post. With these performances, we
believe that giving the opposition a chance in some other
states crippled by the dominance of a long ruling party will
create opportunity for change.
It troubles my mind daily reading about the impunities
that go on among the ruling class. The call for
transparency in governance is truncated daily by these high
and mighty political overlords.
Opposition parties are intimidated daily, thereby creating
fear in those who do not have the courage to withstand
the pressure from the ruling part. In Imo State for
instance, the last PDP administration has been casting
aspersions on the great achievements of Owelle Rochas
Anayo Okorocha, and mischievously painting the
achievements in a negative form. I could recall when the
last administration came to its knees, apologising to Imo
people, stating the mistake made with particular reference
to 10,000 job creation and the teachers issue. It went
further to claim the non-existing roads and infrastructure it
didn’t do, urging Imo people to allow him to return to
power for a second time.
Let me also recall a statement by one of the governorship
aspirants under PDP that Imo State is in huge debt,
undermining the fact that the present administration is
doing what has never been witnessed in the history of the
state. “ Free Education at all levels” is a monumental
achievement, an investment that costs the state huge sum
of money to implement.
With the present free education policy in Imo State, every
child has an unhindered access to basic education.
The role of opposition party, to me, is thinking out those
areas that are vital to the masses, or the better welfare of
the people that the ruling party fails to address or
deliberately ignores.
The most important ingredient of opposition party is to fill
the gap, providing the services that had eluded the people.
I call on all Imo people to be wise. Moneybags and
political deceivers are on the prowl, seeking for voters to
deceive. We must never fall for their tricks.
•Ejimadu writes from Lagos.

Its because Rochas is an APC governor that's why this thread is not moving fast. He has more haters than his fans so you don't expect the thread to accelerate.
