Cleverley lost confidence and became more and more timid as the years progressed. Herrera has not show me yet that he is such a special passer of the ball, he is a good passer.....but thats just it,nothing special for now.

I can't categorically say one is a better passer than the other FOR NOW......I need to see more of Herrera

This is why i had to give up on Cleverley. The major problem was not that Cleverley was unable to pass the ball forward but that he appeared to be UNWILLING to pass it forward. He became too timid to take chances, and fortune favors the brave

He’s a ball-player but he’s not the quickest…I think he could get exposed (in the Premier League)…I think Man United need a powerful defender…who is very physical and very aggressive, and that is definitely not Hummels.

perhaps the öbsession of modern managers to keep possession caused this for him. cleverley can pass the ball but i think as time wore on, he noticed the public started hating him for not really contributing much in the games we lost - his self confidence took a dent & he got worse and worse.

he's started every game for villa since he went there & he doesn't play badly at all. he's a facilitator. he just knit the passes, keep things tidy to preserve possession. the whole cleverley cannot solve calculus is laughable.

His willingness and ability to bring the ball out from the back is what sets him apart from most and the consensus seems to be that this makes him a prototypically Louis van Gaal type of defender. The focus on Hummels’ adeptness on the ball partially hides the reality of his drawbacks, however.

however, if smalling improves his run from deep & doesn't panic when he crosses the half way line then we can overlook hummels & godin should be our target. smalling & jones would have improved massively had they gone to other clubs - SAF & moyes really stunted their growth playing them as RBs.

I will take Hummels ahead of Otamendi. It seems we are getting hummels anyway.....not too bad just wish he was quicker and a lil more physical.

i won't buy anybody from atletico. their success seems to me to be too dependent on the schemes and tactics of their manager.
put most of those defenders and DMs in another system and they might falter.

sadly enough i see your point that varane still has a lot to learn. anyways the signs are that varane stays at madrid or moves to chelsea while hummels stays at dortmund or moves to united.

Jose Mourinho is baffled at the influence on society of footballers such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, considering they “don't save lives”.

The Chelsea boss - one of the most recognisable figures in football - believes people from other walks of life deserve greater status given the tasks they perform on a daily basis.

Mourinho also questioned those who regard football as the most important thing in life.

"I am passionate about football, of course," the former Real Madrid boss told The Daily Telegraph. "But for us professionals, if it means everything then we are in trouble; and for supporters it is the same.

"In Portugal they say that you can change everything except your mum and your football club. I understand football’s power, socially, politically and culturally, but how can a football player be in the top 100 of the most influential people in the world in Forbes magazine?"

When it was pointed out to Mourinho that two footballers are in the top 100, Ronaldo (30th) and Messi (45th), he added: "It’s absurd! We don’t save lives!

"I know that people can jump from a fifth floor because their team lost a game, but that person has problems.

"How can you compare a football player, a football manager with a scientist, a doctor? You cannot compare."

Mourinho worked with Ronaldo for three seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu, where he clashed with Messi's Barcelona on numerous occasions, before returning to the Chelsea helm in 2013.
