“We have been killing wild animals, we have never killed this kind of pig before. It has the capability of killing even a human being if it first sights him or her” the hunters reported. Report got to us that this wild pig was not the game aimed but eventually it happens to be the biggest catch of today. Credit: Afrobadoo 22 Likes 6 Shares

Unlike pigs that produce up to 20 piglets per litter, those beautiful antelopes rarely produce more than one or two per litter. So they are really in serious danger of extinction. Unlike pigs/boar that eat lots of things, they are very picky herbivores and they need thick forests too. With deforestation, the risk is compounded. Our grandkids may never see living ones if we don't stop killing them. Chicken & catfish mass produced are becoming cheaper to buy now. We need to preserve these animals for tourism when we run out of oil/gas. 126 Likes 10 Shares |

Nigerians and bushmeat! Conservation is not in our dictionary! l give it to Kenya as you dare not try this in that Country as such animals na government pikin. Even if you see them destroying your property you still have no right to touch them, all you have to do is inform the Kenyan Wildlife Service and they come assess the damages and pay you compensation. lt is only the Kenyan Wildlife Service that that have the right to kill such animals subject to their discretion. Kenya annually makes billions of dollars from wildlife conservation as TV stations like Discovery Channel, National Geography pay millions of dollars to shoot their wildlife documentaries here not to talk of regular tourists who fly in for safaris. l know if the maasai mara was in Nigeria the hundreds of thousand of the wild animals there would have ended up in our pots as bushmeat! When they migrate it is a beauty to behold, people fly in from all over the world to view it .One really need to experience their migration to really appreciate wildlife Kenyans are taught from their primary school level that the wildlife is their national heritage and foreign exchange earner. 150 Likes 14 Shares

Ijebulogic: It's a monitor lizard. Am really worried about our wildlife, I seriously wonder what will be left in the next 50 years. These Duiker forest antelopes hardly produce more than one offspring a year, and they are been killed in huge numbers.. Unfortunately the word conservation is ailen to Nigeria. The western part of Nigeria is so blessed with thick forest unlike the east. It's your heritage, preserve the animals and plants that live in it. The other day it was a harmless civet cat, only God knows how many more were slaughtered that we hardly hear of. Nigeria should introduce hunting seasons so animals are not killed when the are breeding. 33 Likes 1 Share |

Pavore9:long stories. how much do u ever think we can make from tourism even if we have all the species in the world? honestly speaking, extinction of some breed of animals is one of the smallest problems we in naija shud bother our brains with. As far as this issue is concerned, I am only concerned with rapid deforestation especially when it is carried out for estate development rather than for agricultural purposes. keeping those animals alive can hardly put food on our table (cos we all know they can hardly survive if they are bred under captivity as farm animals) meanwhile, preserving our agricultural land and developing agricultural practices (both animal husbandry (for farmable animals) and crop husbandry) can certainly guarantee food. 17 Likes 3 Shares |

obstead200: l am so pro-conservation, we can't just be killing anything that crosses our sight. Just like you, am so concerned about de-forestation that is why l opened the thread on biogas where cooking gas is generated from our wastes bringing into people's consciousness that it is possible to cook with gas from waste even in the rural areas where our local folks are felling trees for firewood. 13 Likes |

kodded: Feral pigs are very prolific breeders and they are nowhere near to extinction. You need to see the damage they are causing in Australia, Hamburg (Germany) and other places where their populations have gone unchecked. You should do more research before making your pronouncements. 39 Likes 4 Shares |

mfm04622:. Even if they caused problems, indiscriminate shooting is bad. Controlling them should be done cautiously. Back in the day, during holiday visits to the village, hunters and trappers used to hunt wild pigs, deers & antelopes easily. Traps caught many too. But now they are hard to come by. Those monitor lizards, it should be a crime killing them. Pork is widely available now to buy. 6 Likes 1 Share |

Pavore9: Very well put sir. There is a very long and complex value chain to wildlife tourism. Wildlife can spin off many industries like travel agency, TV documentary sector(think Discovery and Natgeo wild etc), selling curios and mementos to foreign visitors, there is even special safari tourism insurance. All these are direct employers. We have alot to learn from wild animals e.g some scientists say some fauna have an ability to fight cancerous cells from their natural immunity. These tissues can be isolated and studied for human benefit. I wish and pray that Nigerians wake up and see the Natural heritage God has entrusted them with before its too late. I didnt spot this post before from one of my fav Nairalanders, always looking forward to your posts. Have a merry christmas. 8 Likes 1 Share |
