For 3 to 4 decades, PHCN gave us darkness and at best epileptic power supply. Privatization is just about 2 years old. It's just common sense to allow more time before reaching conclusions on whether it has failed or not. Let's give privatization at least 10 years, which is just about 1/3 of the time we gave PHCN/NEPA

Joe Ajero!! The man of the people. I concur to your opinion. #babaonechance should Bring back Prof. Barth Nnaji.

These days you guys seem to be wanting to set an agenda for "babaonechance". That is good atleast it shows you want a better Nigeria instead of remaining in agony instead of the loss of a tribe'sman zeal to wreck Nigeria. With that attitude, we will improve ourselves instead of jst sitting back and wishing the govt fails, which will be no good for us either as a nation.

God bless Nigeria.

If Dangote wants ownership of Arsenal.....wouldn't he have to pay for it?......and would the owners after selling continue to pump money into Arsenal ? Wouldn't common sense tell you something is wrong if the owners sold the club but continue to foot the expenses? If yes then the same common sense should tell you something is wrong if the FG sold the electricity utility but continue to foot the bill for its expenditures....and here you are saying they should continue for many more years to come. If he is serious about corruption.....from Day 1...Buhari needs to begin a criminal investigation of this privatization scam .....jail the criminals involved and put the utility back into the hands of the FG.

We should be talking about more competition amongst distribution companies and closer regulation and sanctioning by NERC rather than revisiting the Monopolistic beast that was NEPA. The challenge is that it is very difficult to run 2 distribution companies in an area due to duplication of transformers and power lines. Probably, reducing the area under the administration of distribution companies and making it easy for them to lose their licences to rivals will improve customer experience.

Why has electricity supply been so bad of recent? Accompanied by the very crippling fuel scarcity. #Govt borrowing money to pay salaries and ever rising debt profile. And in the face of all these, recent attention has been on a 'soon-to-be' president. I ask. What is wrong with the current president...who still earns income to do a president's job? What of his ministers? Is it until Nigerians start dying off? This daily suffering is becoming unbearable.

They tried to pack it all in until after elections. But since they were refused at the polls, all is now unravelling. So I'm not talking about Buhari till he becomes President.

President Jonathan, your transformation claims are hogwash...but don't end in ignominy. Sort this electricity and fuel problem in the next few days and leave Nigeria as you met it...as you're not well equipped to fix it.

With such a vile statement coming from a former PHCN senior staff why are we still wondering who the 'ghosts' that are sabotaging gas pipelines are? I heard the Power minister say last week that "demon possessed Nigerians destroy pipelines for NO REASONS, well here's a GOOD reason; RESENTMENT FUELED SABOTAGE.

Now they want Buhari to reverse the privatization. What signals will you be sending out to foreign investors by doing so?
Re: Privatisation Of PHCN A Fraud, Electricity Workers Tell Buhari by logica(m): 9:10am On May 10, 2015
Right. The government injected money into the DisCos just as they injected into the banks a while back. Even airlines got assistance. This is simply because they are essential sectors that cannot be allowed to fail.

what was the right thing Barth Nnaji did that power improved tremendously?..even d nepa workers were against him because he got them on their toes..Privatisation is good but the process was flawed..how can they rely on money from us to provide power for us..meaning they weren't serious people or companies with interests...if telecom could work, others can too..its a big opportunity for investors but the system is their scare...corruption..corruption..when u deal with a few..d others will fall in line..we are flaring gas..we have mamilla plateau etc..Barth Nnaji did it even without privatisation..things can and will work...we can't stop hoping cos life can sure be better.

The federal Government controls transmission, and cant transmit all the power coming from the GENCOS that has been paid for by the DISCOS. So the Transmission company has to pay the penalty.
The gas company will not give gas unless paid by the Gencos. The gencos won't buy unless paid by the DISCOS,neither will the DISCOS pay unless the get the power from the TRansmission company.Unfortunately,we have not raised transmission capacity by a significant level since the 80s. The current administration has started in the last few years to expand transmission it is unto the incoming administration to continue.

The gencos can actually generate more than 5000MW but the Transmission company can't transmit all 5000MW without power losses along the transmission line( Government has to pay for the losses to the gencos and discos). The Gas company is limiting the Gencos to less than 5000MW because they are having sabotage issues.
So the limiting factor in the country's electricity industry is gas pipeline vandalization and transmission capacity.

Bro the DISCO where privatised 100%, TRANSCOs 60 \40 btw govt and private but GENCO are 100 % govt owned.
Do some more research.
Extracted this from a news report on tribune: The Goodluck Jonathan administration came up with the Power Sector Reform Roadmap which culminated in the construction of new plants. The administration also pursued with vigour the privatisation of the generating plants (GENCOs) and the distribution companies (DISCOs) because of the belief that with these in the hands of private companies electricity generation and distribution would witness an improvement.

Although getting the Gencos and Discos privatised was a daunting task given the opposition of the labour movement to the idea, the government eventually accomplished it when the ownership of the generation and distributions companies were transferred to the new owners on November 1, 2013.
http://tribune.com.ng/business/tribune-business/item/11777-road-to-gencos-and-discos/11777-road-to-gencos-and-discos.

I urge you to download the read through the Power sector reform roadmap document; see the link http://www.nigeriaelectricityprivatisation.com/wp-content/uploads/downloads/2011/02/Privatisation_of_PHCN_Introduction_of_Private_Sector_Participation_BPE_CPCS.pdf.
After you read through, you will understand that the DisCo's and Genco's were intended to be privatized whilst the Transmission Company of Nigeria was to be handed over to a credible private sector company under a five year management contract. That company happens to be Manitoba Hydro Intl. You can see that from this link http://www.mhius.ca/news/read,article/45/mhi-awarded-management-contract-by-the-transmission-company-of-nigeria-(tcn).
Finally, you will realise after reading through, that No privatization whatsoever has been conducted on TCN. TCN has only been divided into 3 functional areas; TSP, MO and SO; with the expectation that TSP will be privatised later in the future.

When APC said during their campaigns that they are okay with privatization of the DISCOS and will privatize the GENCO a union is here making noise.
The fact is the union wanted govt to own PHCN so that they can continue siphoning from govt budget

Your head dey there. Hopefully the incoming government will scrutinize the current arrangement, but if this union thinks we will return PHCN to the hands of corrupt government employees who see civil service as a place to laze around and feed fat, they are joking.

I don't know who I dislike more, policemen or NEPA officials.

Government Workers are the bane of Nigeria..........Most of them are the architects of corruption teaching the politicians how to steal!

Are these not the same people that we see in the PHCn offices and in the field collecting bribes for everything. If there is a fault they will collect bribe to fix it yet collect salaries!... and demand for wage increment......they are the same thieves that are involved in over billing and withholding issuance of meters are spares. They render morbidly inefficient services... The unions should even work on inefficiency among thteir members. They should please shut up....Ole gbogbo!

They fought Barth Nnaji because he was on the side of the generality of Nigerians.......Barth proved to Nigerians that the workers are just thieves. Unfortunately the successes made by the privatisation were reversed by the clueless one when he fired Barth. The neew minister may be intelligent and all but ineffective as we can all see.

Nigerian workers unions are hopelessly inefficient and useless they are of no value to this country and my suggestion is that they be proscribed.

Nigeria will only be able to generate and distribute sufficient power if they continue with privatization. What the new government should work on is the monitoring of the DISCOs. The current regulatory agency is moribond

How can Nigeria have stable electricity when there are too many unstable minds in government - how? We will continue to have intermittent power supply for as long as we keep producing a ruling class with minds that, at best, work intermittently and averagely, doesn't work at all. Unless it's about stealing the nation's wealth, that's when they "magically" become geniuses.

You NUEE guys are the main criminals. Power sector has been privatised period. Buhari is not stupid to reverse it. Look at what is happening in NNPC. That one also needs to be privatised immediately and more refineries built. Buhari can revisit power sector privatisation only to fine-tune modalities of operation to enable investors operate at optimum capacity. NUEE wants us to be dragged back to the days of NEPA where they behave anyhow. The private companies have kicked their asses flat and have left them no room for impunity. That's why they are compalining. Idiots!

We also know bought everything GEJ sold off.

The change is here. Nigerians will soon smile.

@originalsly Stop wasting your time. Nobody can reverse the privarisation. What Buharis government should do is to see how the technical losses should be reduced to the barest minimum and find a way to assist the companies with an effective tariff structure that would enable investor make some profits from their investments. In Buharis time he should also privatise NNPC and get more refineries built so we can stop importing petroleum products from other countries. I suggest he does that in his first year in office cos that one is another monster that needs to be dealt with with millitary alacrity!

It seems every one these days except GEJ himself has jumped behind Buhari's agbada to hurl stones at the out going administration and I beg to ask. How can it be that no one takes responsibility for anything in Nigeria except the President and I ask is Buhari alone going to do all these things asked of him. What kind of society is this where no one knows anything, does nothing, is responsible for anything.

Why can't the unions be specific as to what is happening in the sector, what is bedevilling it and what they are doing to make it work. Or does the comrade not work there?

Well Nigerians will decide what happens. I just hope the public will cease blaming the President for absolutely every thing and start taking responsibility individually and collectively for a better society.

If Buhari sends the wrong signals the whole system is bound to collapse. The sector requires massive investments the kind of money government simply doesn't have. So we either raise the funds through debt or equity or both. The out going regime chose the last to fast track development. Let us see what the new government will do.

We won't have stable electricity until everyone has a prepaid meter , when you can actually use only the light you subscribed for. Imagine how hard it is to make call if you don't have airtime , that's how the light too suppose be.

That's why PHCN no dey do promo, they are only charging the big companies. Meanwhile, some houses fit get 5 A/C and Electric cooker and yet they pay #2500/month. If you load prepaid meter with that amount, dem no born you well make you on bulb for afternoon.

Serious work needs to be done in that sector, most important are BILLING and DISTRIBUTION .

So is Ajaero asking for the reversal of the privatization exercise that he vehemently opposed so that we can go back to the evil days of NEPA? This is the most self serving comment that we have seen for a long time. Ajaero represents nothing other than the interest of the cabal in the power sector, who have been sabotaging the efforts of government in making that sector efficient. His criminal kith and kin are the ones sabotaging the gas pipelines while people like him run their media propaganda for them.
One is not saying that the privatization process will solve all the power problems overnight, but every right thinking person knows that it is a necessary first step in getting the power sector to where we want it to be. The likes of Ajaero should quickly come to terms with the fact that the privatization of the DISCOs and GENCOs has come to stay, with that of the TCN to follow in no distant time.
