ifoundmyperfect: Received your email, thanks man!!! Actually skimmed through, i see a lot of good stuff in there already.. One problems of being a wireline engineer is that unless you're a geologist, you're an unfinished product. You cannot fit into any other role without additional training... |

I'd like to add this book to the ones I shared a couple of weeks back, for those of you that is interested in building a career as a Petrophysicists and expanding your cross-discipline knowledge... Its straight forward.... Started from Elementary to Advanced... I use this book to as a guide in creating derived logs like Porosity, Permeability and Vshale with Petrel.. The result of which is closely related to what the Petrophysics will produce after a detailed Petrophysical analysis.. My point is, you can do it yourself... Enjoy! https://www.dropbox.com/s/otvuqji1jjkb30c/WELL%20LOGGING%20AND%20FORMATION%20EVALUATION.pdf?dl=0 |

AAPS: Geophysics is the latest tool employed in the oil industry now, more diverse, less time consuming and flexible. With recent advancement in software Geophysics have an upper hand over Geology. Just my thought someone else can give a contrary view. |

AAPS:The choice is yours to make AAPS. Geology/Geophysics, like any other professional course isn't noodles. Though many will say it's complex or somewhat complicated and in that regard one should avoid it. My own honest opinion is that in every difficult situation, there is always a porous layer to infiltrate to grasp a better understanding. The porous layer for geology and any other professional courses is getting to understand the basis (from scratch) and this comes with readiness and enthusiasm. You must be determined! Many people prefer Geophysics to Geology because of its assumed less complexity. That is very true! Geophysics is a branch/tool in Geology. Geology being the study of the earth, it's origin, evolution, composition, and processes that act/acting upon it to bring about its historic/present form. This sounds like a lot. It is! In your first degree as a Geologist, you'd be introduced to different courses (Geochemistry, Geophysics, Hard and Soft Rock Geology (Petrology), Engineering Geology, Structural Geology, Ore deposits, Stratigraphy, Hydrogeology, Geostatistics, Micropalenotology, Palynology, and a host of others. These syllabus will be covered within your 4-5years period before being awarded a degree. This will provide you a foundational knowledge in the field. During these period, there might be an area of key interest to you. You may choose to go for your Masters in that area or seek job opportunities for such openings. As a graduate of geology, your expertise is required not only in the oil and gas industry, but engineering, water cooperation, solid mineral exploration etc! With the knowledge of Geology in mind, you'd understand and appreciate the need for Geophysics. To put in simple words, it's understanding the earth with the aid of the knowledge of Physics. Physics and Mathematics go hand in hand. However, you still need the knowledge of Geology, as you'd still be taking some compulsory geology course, even when your major is geophysics. Need I mention, to be a full fledged Geoscientist, your knowledge in Mathematics, Englsih, Physics, Chemistry and Biology is vital. I highlight an example. Eng. Geology, Geophysics, Structural Geology (Mathematics & Physics (major), Geochemistry, Mineralogy/Crystallography (Chemistry, Mathematics & Physics), Micropaleontology, Palynology (Biology) etc. As I started off, the choice is yours. If one is looking for an escape route, then I'd recommend going for a monotonous course (linguistics, human kinetics, G&C etc). Na sabi wetin you want and also achieve. I know Geology/Geophysics doesn't have it easy in most schools. That yet I opened this thread to encourage your kinds. IT IS NOT THAT DIFFICULT! Create an academic plan for yourself at the beginning of each semester. Establish a balance between your academics and flexing. No dey shame to ask questions, or to corner your lecture @ his office to ask question if shame no gree you ask, don't let pride prevent you from taking lessons from your younger ones wey sabi. We all have different degree of comprehension. No one is dull! You can come here or email me if you have academic challenges. I'd try to respond as quick as I can. Please don't let anyone make this choice for you. It should be entirely lost. You know you strength and weakness. It's not for you to run away from me but work on it! My Bsc was in Geology, Msc Geophysics. And the choice was entirely mine because I wanted to establish a balance. Your Choice, Your Reasons... Choose Wisely! Goodluck!! 3 Likes 1 Share |

Ifoundmyperfect, great job you are doing here. I really commend your effort! Not everyone who has found his or her way to the "oyel" industry look back to encourage prospective entrants and undergraduates alike; kudos bro! I am a geology graduate myself, although still looking forward to the big break. You can help by putting up any entry level or internship position in your place of work or sister coys. |

AAPS: Congratulations on your admission. Now that you've scaled the hurdle of UTME and POST UTME, you need to prepare yourself for the task ahead! I feel your present state because I finished from the place you are now. Ifoundmyperfect has given you a clear picture of geology and geophysics already but I am going to chip in some tips to achieve academic success at AAUA. * Don't be carried away by freedom of leaving home for the first time. * Keep friends of like minds. Don't let anyone tell you geology/geophysics is difficult and blablabala. In your first year, you will only take two geology courses (introductory geology I & II). Better part of your course load will be in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, and other university courses that are compulsory. What I am saying in essence is for you to take all courses serious and don't think its only geology or geophysics courses that you need to channel your energy to. I will update the other part later. Cheers. 2 Likes |

Good day everyone, good day OP, I hail u for such good work nd nice thread, it's good to see a group of people in this same field, though am not happy am coming late! Name is Mike, a geophysicist nd graduated in 2012 bout hasn't been easy getting a job in this field! I actually have some work experience doing a contract job offshore, filtration services to precise! Had to leave because of the poor conditions of service and a longing to return back to my field! I am currently attached to a company learning seismic interpretation using Petrel and about to go into modelling! Am also applying for a master's in geology to help me get better in seismic interpretation! I appreciate the materials that ve been posted by the op, would love if it's sent directly to my email! Thanks nd nice to b here! |

mikkyjagga1: Welcome on board bro. No knowledge is lost. You are still on track. Try learn that Petrel wella. And update you usability with their latest versions. It's the global money maker for reservoir characterization from seismic to simulation. If you intend getting a better hand on seismic interpretation, then u sld opt for Exploration Geophysics in your masters. I dey here if you need a cue on modeling and interpretation. Best of luck! |

herringbone: Good to have you on board bro. You are right about the thread trending to oil and gas exclusively. But it's not limited to that only. I'd try to make it more flexible to accommodate more specialised areas of G&G and PE. Just keep following thread. |

AAPS, what worked for me might not necessarily apply to you. However I'd share with you my story and give you some hints. You made emphasis on electricity. Shey u need nepa to charge up ur reading mode? Lol... kidding! Now, this was me back in the school. Back in school, I had a very bad start. I was unserious and didn't believe so much in myself. I had this mentality of certain grades being stereotyped to different individuals (even though na the same schl fees we dey pay). So I was contempted with my early average performance till I decided to wake up and made a move for a change. My step to excellence was changing my mindset, routine and friends. I rode solo, till I found someone who had the say goal and objectives as myself. Just the two of us. (na guy o) We only went to the library to find books our colleagues don't have or we couldn't find on the Internet. I don't read in the library (my style). because my eyez susceptibility to any human that passes around me was high and my ears could pick whispers 50m away from me. Meaning I was easily distracted back then before mastering the art of concentration. So what I did was to go to isolated corners in the school to read from 5pm to 7pm (2hrs) and wake up by 4am/5am when everywhere is silent to read. Na wit my nokia touch light I used back den if nepa no giv us light. This became a habit. Statistically, around that time den brain finds its easier to assimilate. But ensure you retire early to have enough sleep and eat healthy. Mingle with intelligent people that have similar goals as yourself. You can have one study partner. For me, more dan one na crowd. Try to revise what you are being taught each day after lectures using other books to support what you have been given in class. That way you learn more and have an easier understanding on the topic. And you go dey fire anyhow for class. I read a topic several times days before the lecture lectures on it. Don't miss classes. Even if the lecturer no sabi teach. There will be one of two things u'd pick up at the end of the day. Twas during one nonsense talk (as many students will see it) dat I learnt how to quickly estimate the area of map by measuring the size of your palms and spreading it across the sheet. I bet I was amongst the few persons that picked this gist from this perceived loquacious lecturer nonsense talk. I've aforementioned in an earlier post that you should learn to ask questions. Be it intelligent or stupid. And don't feel ashamed to also ask a junior. Try and have a good start. because as you climb the ladder, it gets more demanding intellectually. Learn to answer questions in exams correctly. How? Read broad to get a better understanding on the subject. (for the upteenth time). When answering, support your answers with sketches, diagrams or illustrations, that way, if the examiner doesn't make plenty sense from what you wrote (in case u tell something new), he can deduce from you illustration. Aim towards scoring 150 over 100 (150/100). That way, when all those bad belle lecturers try cut your mark, u'd still be within A range. E get where you go good reach, na your script lecturer go dey use as standard for marking scheme. I'm a living testament. The summary of this is that you should be prepared always and don't indulge in fire brigade method of preparation. Best of luck! 1 Like 2 Shares |
