HI I am just seeing this. I dunno if its late but here goes.
For renewal of passport in NIgeria, I only went with the old passport and money.
Then for visa extension (within Canada), its the study permit you extend 1st. I had to submit
-Proof of medicals that i did in Nigeria
- Statement of account (I used my canadian account since i had all my money there)
- Letter of enrollment from my school
- Passport data page and copies of all visas and study permit
- Passport photograph.
- Cost of study permit extension $150

I applied June 16th and app was approved yesterday.
Once i get the study permit document, I will apply for a new TRV since the old one has expired too.

@Graviton2 I feel that the VO wanted more proof of funds or an updated SOA that's why you were asked to submit additional documents at first but on a closer look at your start date and the fact that you may be unable to provide what he needs before your start date bearing in mind you are a paper applicant (it would have been quicker if you were to just upload it on your mycic account) he just felt you stand a better chance deferring your admission and refiring. Read the previous 50-100 pages and you will find your answer on a platter of gold .
Also read through @richcasey's links for a condensed treasure trove of valuable information.

I would advise that you don't only apply to schools with cheap tuition particularly if your BSc CGPA is above 4.0. As a PhD applicant, you should get funding if you play your cards right; this post (link edited) should help you on tips to find a research supervisor.

After you get admission, you should read at least 400-500 pages of the thread.
