This is interesting, will the polystyrene be use as support for the concrete slab? Will it be able to withstand the load of the slab because of its light weight? Or it's gonna be use as both the beam and the slab?

Rib slab are done on floors with relatively medium to low live load ( load of occupant, furniture and other variable loads), in most cases for residential ( live load for residential 1.5kN/m2), schools, hotels (2.5kN/m2) all these details can be gotten from BScodes.

The ribs are design as small beam running perpendicular to the longer side of the slab (ly), and parallel to the shorter part of the slab (lx).
the rib are spaced at design distance ( from BS 8110), the space between the beam is occupy by this non structural polystyrene.

A concrete topping of not less than 75mm is placed on top of this polystyrene to protect the polystyrene and provide a moving surface for occupant above the suspended floor. a wire mesh is provided inside the toping to control cracking of the concrete.

i will do a sketch to buttress my point.

Could it be the wonder working "cellular raft" foundation? A lot of residential projects in Lekki can actual survive harsh soil condition using this method without pilling. Even worse terrain in Ori-Oke, Ogudu area (but definitely not Akoka o) survived using this foundation.

Patiently waiting for the unveiling of the new type of foundation.

Respect Oga!

Uptill yesterday I am still working to comfirm the visibility of this method. I am to continue work on it this afternoon hope to complete it today. it is a combo of some foundation type not really new in the world but I am sure it is new to Nigeria somehow I hope I am right sha. It has been used in the Germany and Singapore for high rise building on a critical soil type. But their method is cost crazy, what we are doing is to modified the method to make it cheaper, and the most challenging aspect is to back it up with design a best practice.

Thanks for the lecture sir. But can polystyrene also be use for beams and slabs?

polystyrene can be use in slab ( ribbed or waffle slab), this will reduce load on beams, thereby reducing beam section (weight) and reinforcement

It can't be used for beams.. Just the rib slab.

@abdulwastecx In terms of cost and availability of materials, which would be better to use between Polystyrene and the clay pots for reduced load on the structure? I have a feeling clay will be cheaper. What do you think?

availability of materials= clay block
cost = polystyrene
reduced load/ weight = polystyrene
speed of construction = polystyrene

Same way it will reduce beam section weight is the same way it will reduce the ability of the beam to carry the imposed load especially on a multi rise structure

Same way it will reduce beam section weight is the same way it will reduce the ability of the beam to carry the imposed load especially on a multi rise structure

it doesn't reduce the ability of beams to carry imposed load.

for example, a simple slab with the following loading condition
1. live load (Qk) = 1.5kN/m2
slab thickness = 150mm
weight of floor finishes = 1.2kN/m( assumed value)
2.dead load on such slab( Gk):
self weight of slab = 0.15x24 = 3.6kN/m2
Gk = 3.6+ 1.2 = 4.8kN/m2
design load (w) = 1.6Gk + 1.4Qk
w = 6.72+ 2.1kN/m2 = 8.82kN/m2

summary: for a typical dwelling unit of a design load 8.82kN/m2, out of which dead loads account for 76.2% ( 6.72kN/m2).

Conclusion: dead load can be reduce by introducing a lighter materials at some section of the floor slab ( provided live load not heavy).

I got the picture below off the internet but have personally used the polysterene for my concetre facial and the results was fantastic.
Its lighter and more flexible in terms of usage than the clay pots.

Can you do cost analysis of using polystyrene for a 312 m2 pent slab? I can forward you the design and calculation sheet.

My initial plan was to do I-section to reduce the load coming on the first floor slab.

The section of the poly strip is design with inward depression that allows concrete to flow into it casting. i will try to get a sketch to give better explaination

Yes. Cellular foundation may be used to soft some foundation problems but only in some area. To start with, Cellular foundation is ideal where soil improvement has been recommended by soil test analysis.( I think I doubt if possible in ogudu orioke where 24-27m depth is being recommend)
But to be factual this form of foundation is quite cumbersome and even may be costly .Thorough supervision is required that all top soil is excavated before concrete blinding.
However, the most easy and safest form of foundation is Pilling!

Oga Kola! Happy Sunday. This seems very much like hollow clay-pot suspended slab construction. One guy building near one of my project site was able to pull up 5 floors within 6 months using the clay-pot. I noticed the rc beams which were normally required in standard in-situ construction over long span were eliminated. They were not only able to save on time. They were also able to save on materials.

Oga abdulwastecx, is it the same construction as hollow clay-pot?

Baba Agba! Yes, they did a cellular raft in Ori-Oke. It was even a Nairalander project done in 2011. I think Gbagada and Akoka are the worst terrain to build in Lagos. 40m depth in some part of Akoka (Not all that glitters are gold). I saw a 3 floor building vanished completely with my korokoro eyes in Akoka.

@chekitaut, the green building beside where you supplied is actually a storey building and not a bungalow. A whole floor has vanished completely.

Maybe, it's worth it to open discussion on worse terrain to build in Lagos.

Again! Pictures or videos of the shoddy work or record of N200k paid to Brabus or i-don't-believe-it.

Good morning!

Busy day, I have a lot to come and I will be showing it to you the more you keep opening your mouth to prove a point to me.

I had a qualified structural engineer visit site, not a computer technician turn builder overnight or textbook builder or scam artist.

I mean who does this out of wickedness, why and how on earth would you mix cement bag with concrete. Something that can be easily pulled off and thus pulling off some of the concrete fabric as well. This was all under the watch of brabus / bosun.

Because I said i would supply my own materials, he has decided to expose them to the elements so that they will rust and thus prove a point to me.

Terrible job everywhere, all under his watch (brabus Bosun Davies)

Same nonsense, never cared to retify it.

Absolute disgrace, why would you bring your brother or plumber or whatever to my site, collect a lot of money from me and still do a shoddy job like this. I really dont like breaking concrete, but what can we do here

Missed out a beam here, I will have to reinforce it somehow now.

Is it not supposed to be straight ??

Who in their right state of mind would rest a pillar on block work And you tell me this is not wickedness or being spiteful ?

Now anyone can say this is all sour grapes, but I am just exposing what bosun/brabus is really like. I mean, would he claim that i am owing him money, not enough materials or what ??

Are you saying brabus did this work? you mean this shoddy job was done by the same brabus who comes on here and acts like a building Evangelist?
Never ceases to amaze me with this guy's impunity. Always thinking people are against him without showing any kind of remorse.

This is a disgrace to the building profession and I hope the other builders on this site can speak up on this.

This guy should not be allowed to get away with such atrocities by saying that the other clients are still in contact with him for advice.

So what? is that an excuse to keep producing such dangerous constructions for his clients.

You come on here and comment on other posts and act like you are a real professional but you are just a well packaged cowboy.

It's amazing how other people on this site seem to give you props when they know what you are really like.

You are a disgrace to the other Credible builders on this site.

Are you going to compensate Maverick for this shoddy job?

Oga Befto

YES BRABUS did all this shoddy work. And I challenge him to come here to deny it !!
Defrauded me in the process and hence why he wanted to bribe my security with 10k to steal materials.
The fact that he comes online to offer advice and act like a subject matter expert despite no building qualifications but the qualification of a scam artist.

I am compiling a dossier of all other terrible work that he did and they will henceforth follow him on the digital world, the accomplice who defrauded me with fake building approval, I am putting final touches to dealing with him as well. I am not letting this GO.
