Yoruba people, una fall my hand.

How can you sit there and let one Igbo non grata mod rewrite your history.

He even said "omo" and "Oba" arent Yoruba words.

Seun see ya life. Is this really your agenda?

No bastard can rewrite Yoruba history, I was going to doing panelbeating of truth into the idoit head, but then some more lenient Yoruba already did it.

It'd really surprise me if Urhobo and Itsekiris don't stay with an Odu'a republic.

Itsekiri will go with Odua. Never the Urhobo, not after Awolowo did to them. And it's a shame that this thread has condescend to a proxy war between the Yoruba and the Igbo. Big big shame

It is a sign of not capable of standing others greatness without finding recless way to bring them down.

It's getting out of hand.....it's becoming pathetic to see bigfrancis misinform the public and to turn this section to anti-Yoruba under Seun's watch.

In fact, the latter part of that Urhobo sentence sounds a lot like Yoruba. That is, if Orgor=inlaw=ana (in Yoruba), then check this out:
ana re nko? smiley smiley

Igbos equally use nko. People should stop thinking in one direction. An Igboman will ask Ogor gi kwanu? or Ogor e nkor? depending on the dialect of Igbo which is in hundreds. Let us just know that Igbo-Edo-Yoruba spoke one language in distant past and have experienced inter migrations even in more recent times.

I believe all languages borrow from other languages at a point in time, so no language can't b quite unique to itself without some form of interference from other languages. Again we should understand that languages evolve around the environment in interacts with e.g the Portuguese call gold "Oro" and that is what the Urhobos also call it probably as a result from interactions with the Portuguese. Finally, let's all realise that language is dynamic and not static.

Bigfrancis21, I think we've had enough of the derailing of the thread via this proxy war. Enough is enough. There are loads of Urhobo people who never grew up at home and can't speak the language. This thread is to help them at least learn some words not for yoruba and igbos to come and start claiming superiority.

You cannot FORCE people I repeat FORCE people to want to be associated with you.

This is why say if Biafra is declared 90% OF THE SS WILL PREFER TO STAY WITH THE WEST.

Nko is a Yoruba word, used as a question marker like "se".

Yoruba has become such a national language over time that you guys are beginning to see it as your native language.

Even the pidgin English has adopted Yoruba words as slangs.

50 years from now, we'll have this same conversation about "wahala", "jor/jare" etc.

@OP...Jesu, Omo and Oba are not Yoruba words. Jesu is derived from Jesus and cannot be considered Yoruba in anyway. Jesu is only a localized adaptation of the Jesus name in Christianity amongst Igbos and Yorubas. Jesus Christ is Jesu Kristi in Igbo as well.

Omo is common to Edo languages, Urhobo, Isoko, and Yoruba and cannot be said to be derived from Yoruba specifically.

As for Oba, I think you are looking for the origin far beyond where you should. Oba is a Bini/Edo word and NOT a Yoruba word. Ancient Yoruba kings were never addressed as Oba but were known by their various territorial titles such as alaafin of xyz, ajuwale of abc. We begin to see the appearance of Oba in Yoruba land after the Binis conquered Lagos and installed an Oba of Lagos (mind you this Oba was a Bini Oba, not a Yoruba Oba, ruling over Lagos) after which the usage of 'Oba' began to spread over Yoruba land.

You also forgot to include that 'igho' is similar to 'ego' in Igbo for money. tongue

In a very informative thread such as this, this post will qualify for the dumb-mest( if there exist such a word) post in NL today. coming from a MOD I am shocked.

Whoever paid your school fees, go and return it, you are not very smart. I am saying this with all sense of responsibility.

Ewa in Yoruba means beans and same in Urhobo, but there are Urhobo words for beans which are peculiar to "Us" i.e the ésha is a different specie of beans while the white one is called "iré". So depending on your dialect/part of Urhoboland you hail from they could mean one and same or different, as for me I am from Olomu and iré and ésha are distinctly different.

Before you assign any word to a particular group, make sure you did your research!

Isusu has Igbo origin. It is an ancient banking tradition of the Nri Igbo brought to the Americas by the Igbo slaves. It beacame known as "Susu".

One day an ignorant father will tell his children OBA is not a Yoruba word but a Bini word,

15 years later, the ignorant father has transfer his ignorance to his next generation, the ignorant adults will begin to argue with other enlighten people that they know for a fact OBA is not a Yoruba word.

Such is the situation we find ourselves with these people.

I was also a little perplexed by the emboldened. I know the Igbo (especially the southern Igbo) have a savings system called Isusu, which they say they've had since the precolonial days.

But I've also seen claims that the Yoruba have a similar system which they call Esu or Esusu.

@OP: Do the Urhobo use 'ugo' for 'eagle' or is it just the Orogun that do?

I didn't know it was called Esusu, I know it as "Ajo"
