dejia:I really want to appreciate your efforts toward the inauguration of Pork Producers Association. In fact, its a dream coming to reality. I want you to use this forum to explain to us why the membership annual dues/fees is #100k. Every wise-farmer will want to why he should pay that amount of money to become a member of newly organized association. For instance, I am a registered member of Animal science Association of Nigeria, all i have to pay in a year is below 50k. Why cant we learn from the Poultry Association of Nigeria? Try to know their(PAN) annual dues and review the annual of PPAN in same manner. I also think the association should be decentralized like that of PAN. In my own place (ogbomoso), we already have pig farmers association and by the grace of God we are aiming at being affiliated with PPAN. Once again I salute your wisdom. |

Oniemo:i am not trying to disrepute the place or discourage you But a place touted to be the biggest piggery farm in west Africa should be more organised and well quipped by Government. The business is a multimillion Naira investment(if not more) which could fetch taxes for government. A friend of my mum who retired is also at Oke Aro but she does complain that she is not making enough profit compared to the cost of personnel and rent( a big pen goes for like 5k per month).Like the woman i spoke with, she has being in d biz for like 13yrs and she is doing well. on supervision like Dejia spoke earlier, biz you don't monitor or familiar with dont thrive well in nigeria. |

The brewery waste feed(its the major bulk of feed given because of cheap cost and availability) but wont give much weight to finisher pigs.

How to start pig farming..Piggery is another aspect of farming in Nigeria that is making smart investors huge money on daily basis. If you are into this pig farming, you sure wouldn’t lack money again for the rest of your life. The reason is because Pig meet is in high demand in Nigeria and sells very very fast in the market. Can I raise 100 piglets in an half roofed space of 60 feet × 40feet. I am interested in fattening only ( raising weaners to finisher). What is the cost of one weaner now? What is the cost & profit projection if I want to do this? Awaiting response from our gurus . Thanks |
Re: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by femu(m): 9:57pm On Nov 07, 2015 |
Mackson01: Price of weaners varies and can determined by the breed, health condition, size etc. It ranges from 2500-10,000 naira. profit is determined by the quality and cost of your feeding. you can assume 50% of the turnover as feed costs. Since you want to fatten i advice you use good feed for faster returns. 1 Like |

awosmart:It has been a while I commented in this thread. ayosmart i thought Astron imported camborough pigs, and when you use the term terminal sire line, in my limited knowledge of pig genetics you mean the boars imported are solely for producing market pigs and not establishing a breeding line. I happen to have seen the boars at iart, they have large white, landrace, duroc and one called genconverter. The desire for pure bred pigs is universal but hybrids are better suited for most commercial farms. We need to specialise and allow breeder farms handle the management of the pure lines. Large white and landrace are reputed sow line breeds while the duroc are terminal. The current rave camborough is actually a large white /landrace hybrid. I believe farmers should know this and know what they are buying. Pure breeds are far more expensive than hybrids. Lastly management of these breeds is very vital so in your desire to aquire, have in mind that the purest breed with suboptimal care is a waste of resources. I would love to see a picture of your animals ayosmart. |

lolarde: Hi Lolarde, Am happy you mentioned the word " Passion" Without Passion, you cant go into Piggery, i guess thats why both words starts with the same letter ( P) .Piggery isnt a money spinner , it requires alot of research and Patience; because the practice hasnt been standardised in Nigeria, hardly will you meet 2 farmers using similar feed formular alot of farmers are using waste/ bi-products available around them. I am willing to mentor you, drop me an e-mail. awosmart: Awosmart, Thanks for the comment and thanks for liking the facebook page. Well, a few of us took time to discuss this association, it took us over a year of considering several things and factors, i also met with the South African Pork producers association to help us model our association . We have modeled the association after the SA Pork association which has been very successful ; for us to increase pork consumption in Nigeria , we need money, the 100k isnt going to any members pocket, but for the association to fulfill its aims and objectives i wont like to derail this form with the gist of the association, send an email : info@ppanig.com ; also check the other requirements as well ciouxox: Hi Ciouxox, I live in SA but my pig farm is in ilorin, kwara state, drop me an e-mail. i have some clients in ph, that i can hook you up with. 1 Like |

I thought this was interesting... Nigeria are set to smile as meat processing becomes the next development target for investors. Starting meat processing is also best if you are looking for a good business opportunity that has a stable. Meat processing (shop) factory plant industries handles the Slaughtering cows, pork, chicken, lamb&goat, packaging, pricing display varieties of meats in freezer and distribution of carcasses such as Beef, pork, lamb, goat, chicken fish, seafood, burgers, sausages, mince meat and other livestock. A meat market store provides a business opportunity to individuals with an interest in providing customers with better quality, more selection and better customer service. I have experience in all aspects of butchery, meat, pork, chicken, lamb&goat processing from training staff to a very high standard and factory set up 14years experience in meat food industries. @ Jessam, Thanks for the picture of the nipple on the tank, will like to ask.. How long have you had this on the plastic tank? Did the pigs ever try to pull it out? Because i know even on concrete, if not properly done, they use dia teeth to pull it out of the wall. I think its a brilliant concept, if it will last long, you can use this to also manage medication, you can add Multivitamin or specific drugs in the water for a few pigs and monitor the consumption, but i think for a large farm, its still cheaper to run the water thru the walls has compared to individual drums. @ Butchery, Am happy you posted here, after our chat, Processing is the future of this industry, those who process, make double a times triple what pig farmers make; kindly post prices, and specific basic equipment for here for those looking into processing. I will be writing on my experience on pork processing soon. |
Re: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by Jessam: 6:50am On Nov 24, 2015 |
dejia: It works for us just fine, even the large pigs don't try knock it over, as you rightly pointed out its a good way to administer medication. we have had these drums for over 2 years. We actually fill them with water twice a day with a water pump from our main tanks. This particular task of refilling is part of the daily task of staff that clean the pens and provide food.

Re: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by Jessam: 7:01am On Nov 24, 2015 |
omode2: Not being funny but from what i see in the photograph Oke Aro that this is being touted as the biggest pig farm in west Africa is BIG disgrace. This farm looks run down and frankly dirty, I am not accusing the farmers who rent the pens but have to question the management of the farm. I might be wrong so please correct me, but this is a government initiated farm? At Jessam cattle ranch and farm we take pride in our surroundings and so do many other farms, but from I see here this is not the case. Here pics of the piggery section of our farm. 1 Like
