Jessam:Nice structures you have there. is this a new farm or you just moved to this site? How many sows do you have. I would love to see your boar. Landrace vs large white is the best hybrid for maternal lines. |

Re: Pig Farmers Lets Meet Here by femu(m): 11:00am On Nov 27, 2015 |
adegbem: My advice is you do either Piggery or Fishery. 2million is a small amount of money if you intend to breed in Piggery. With 2million you should initially focus on fattening and possibly rent a facility instead of constructing your own. When u master the business you can consider buying sows and building your own place. No business plan will reveal the intricacies of the business, the best you can do is to understudy a successful and experienced farmer 1 Like |

eazeefix: Jessam Cattle ranch and farm have been on the same Enugu site for 3.5 years. Due to popular demand for our livestock we are always expanding our housing for livestock. For example our pig housing has gone from one building that can hold 200 grown pigs to 4 buildings that can hold 1000 pigs. The same for our poultry section. We also pay close attention to maintenance and ensure that repairs are done regularly including repairing floors, replastering walls and rehanging doors. We also look after our surroundings, ensuring grass is cut, weeds are controlled, on a daily basis we pick up rubbish including all types of plastic bags and debris. Hopefully photographs of our farm and animals attests to the high standards of livestock care and farm estate management we adhere too. Thank you for showing interest in our farm

Oniemo: My experience at Oke-Aro was not too fantastic. Note I was there for a year before I moved to my permanent site. I only used the place to multiply my herd size. The issues I had with the place are as follows: Disadvantages: 1. The environment is very unkempt and dirty. The secretariat is not doing as much as they should be doing. 2. The attendants there are mostly fraudsters who are out to milk newbies. 3. The proximate positioning of many farms makes it very easy for your attendant to sell your feed. 4. Most farmers aren't ready to help you; they are just out to take advantage of your ignorance. 5. You have no control over bio security. Advantages: 1. It is easier for you to sell few animals. You can sell even one because the buyers aggregate their purchases by taking a few here and there to make up their need. 2. It is easier to source for feed. You can buy one or 2 bags or as many as you require. On your own personal farm you won't enjoy this luxury. I will advise that you look for a successful pig farmer who is willing to share his experience with you while he allows you to have some hands on by renting out space and other resources to you. Cheers. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Really informative thread. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. For someone who would like to go into pig farming in Lagos but with not much capital, what would the gurus in the house advice? Capital is < 200k. Also, are there facilities accessible through BOA or similar bodies? Kindly provide information on the process of securing the loans/grants. I'll really appreciate this. |

adegbem:Where is your location? Do we have other piggery farmers there? Most buyers come from the East or SS to buy in bulk which only few big farms can meet their demands. Network with other farmers. Do you also have access to cheap feed ingredients in your location what about good foundational stocks, thats where your feasibilty plan comes in. |

The cost of constructing a pen house as a beginner doesnt come cheap. But a wooden or bamboo pen can also be constructed to reduce cost. 1 Like |

Hello, I am trying to start a Pig farm in Ibadan but would like to have practical training on a farm. If your farm is in Ibadan kindly contact me on dhejaavu69@yahoo.ca Am not tackling you o. you have made beneficial contributions, however am just expressing caveats for beginners, people with limited funds and pensioners. My impression of pure foreign breed pigs is formed by my experience and interactions with different farmers over the years. You haven't told us your weaning weight, farrowed litter size, weaned litter size and weight at 6months to justify the investment on foreign breeds. Slatted floors are good let's see how your implementation proceeds. How easy will it be to extract the manure from the soakaway for sale to farmers?how attractive will it be to extract for the buyer,do you pump or pack it? The farms I have observed doing this have a dedicated vehicle dat pumps this waste and sprays it on their farmland. You made an important contribution on generating maggots from pig waste to feed fish, I have also practiced it but gave up for some obvious reasons. I look forward to more exposure on generating maggots efficiently from pig waste. I have no reason to criticize your feed formula it is good, feed formuation depends on your locality. Farmers in ilesa hardly pay for Brewery waste, just transport cost. In Ota, it is a different story. In Ota, Cassava peels almost cost nothing. In Oyo, maize is pure water. I used to get bloodmeal for free etc...... After constructing my pens, I went to ilesa to visit farmers. I was amazed at what they where able to achieve with limited financial resources. Infact a farmer constructed a 15 room pen and didn't spend a kobo on roofing. The idea he used is very smart. We are all learning!!![/quote] 1 Like |

Feel free to contact us on 08032455430 or 09099020582. Ask for Ejike Have a nice day guys, to all farmers keep up the good work in helping feed the nation, we are often not appreciated especially our government. Subsidy for fuel importers but not for food producers... SMH frankly silly
