Why is the onne sea port not clearing containers?
Why is it not helping to deliver imported petrol?

Why did Nigeria spend so much to build sea port
99% of goods are still imported through the older sea port in lagos?

Onne unlike lagos is a very free place..
Trucks can park and load whatever without encroaching into port Harcourt city I unlike lagos.

So y not use that port?

Why pay shipping companies demurrage daily to wait till they get discharged/offloaded at lagos port?

Is it politics again?

Nigeria should learn effective and efficient ways of living...

Ethnic and regional politics is the biggest enemy of our economy. With this type of arrangement, people from Ss+SE will find it difficult to export their products abroad

this is one of the reasons some people called jonathan a clueless man.
When nnamdi azikiwe was there he brought UNN.

When tafawa balewa was there he brought ahmadu bello university.

When shagari was there he initiated plans to move the f.c.t from lagos to abuja.

When maj.Gen.buhari was there he built kaduna refinery.

When IBB was there he moved the capital from lagos to abuja.

When abacha was there he over looted.

When gej was there he....?

This is the only reasonable thing GEj could have done for us the NigerDeltans. This would have brought about rapid development to our region.

Amaechi is another son of ours, and is very perfect for the job. let's see if he can do what GEJ didn't do.

On a serious note, this seaport issue is something which has defied any logical explanation except for the uselessness of successive Nigerian governments. The convenient excuse that has always been given is that the PH and other eastern axis seaports are shallow water and can't hold large vessels; another excuse has been security. Some theorists have claimed that the west and north are deliberately sabotaging the eastern axis seaports so they can claim all the revenue in the western ports. The big question I usually ask in all these is what southern and eastern leaders have been doing all these years in Abuja regarding issues like this.

Hopefully Amaechi does something about this.

How many container will be board on a ship to onne? If you can load a full ship it will be delivered to your onne port. But since only a few container are heading to east, it is economic waste.

It is not politics and the government beyond creating a favourable environment, by making clearing charges and conditions more attractive in onne can not force private owned vessels to dock at oone if Lagos remains favourable.

There are several reasons and I'll expand on them

1- Reliability and history

For many years this vessels which trade and call at the Nigerian port have docked in Lagos, the captain understand the area from a seafaring perspective. They've always gone to Lagos and have a planned route which may involve visiting multiple ports along West Africa. Ships are not planes they take weeks to cross the ocean. There is no reaon a ship can not dock at onne and then process to Lagos

2 - Safety

PH is the Capital of kidnapping in Nigeria, it is also in proximity to the MEND and ND vandalism and piracy. Why would a ship ladden with goods worth millions of dollars go near such a port, some of these foreign owned and registered ships are not even insured to go near onne.

It is up to the PH SG and governors forum of that GP zone to resolve the security issues for their own benefit. You can't blame a bunch of Yoruba people in Lagos for the actions of PH and ND citiEnrry and it's effect.

3 - Demand

Lagos remains the centre of commerce and trade on Nigeria, and it is used and accessed by all Nigerians, some 50% of imported consumer goods on those ships belong to people from SE, these same people can bring the goods through onne but they'd rather land their goods safely in Lagos ths risk it being hijacked in PH.

Lagos is more central and accessible to.other parts of Nigeria than PH , if the second Niger bridge is built this may equalise things a little.

Govenemt can not force the concept of demand to change, it can only alter it's supply of said demand to encourage individuals to use alternatives

There are other reasons but those are simple immediate ones

Politics ko politricks ni.

Just tell the so called importers and killers of our economy to make the port of destination for their goods to be Onne and the shipping lines will comply.

However, they all know it will come at a higher cost to them because the shipping lines will factor in the possibility of kidnapping, piracy and even death.

Hmm.. I am saying it ain't working like a standard sea port that it was built to be.

And making it fully functional will reduce 1bilion naira a day we pay as dumorage to oil bearing ships.

Or do you think that is non factual?

Btw I am asking the question here.. :-)

Really you think a full ship from China discharges all containers at lagos port?
Y then do you think we pay them dumorage?

I hope you do not pray the FG to build you a seaport and after the completion demand that FG must also provide those that must patronise the seaport ?

How may times have you heard of container piracy at onne?
Maeserk lines use it to date without issues.

And all these your points..
If you were the presidents.. Can you not overcome them to improve the lives of your people?

Or at least to reduce the dumorage costs to your Government?

It is so expensive to deliver to Onne because of the following:

1. The importers had a choice of filling destination port themselves and they wrote Lagos with their own pen.

2. Th hazards for liners to berth in Onne is too much and it is not commensurate with the reward. Hence, captain decline carrying cargoes meant for such dangerous water. Anyone that will berth there will be at a higher cost.

3. Due to the fact that more ships are not berthing there, the charges might cost more because the cost of running a port is almost th same whether the port is in Zungeru or Sambisa or Kandahar. It is those small number of berthing ships that will bear the brunt of the total operational cost of the port. Hence the charges.

This will decrease greatly if only the importers from SE can simply fill Onne as destination port, can insure the lives of the crew and pay premium for the risk the ship is undertaken.

I'm sure onne is a great facility, I meant hostile piracy when individuals attack ships, with the action if MEND and militants in that axis with access to the sea using fast boats this is a reality if the traffic in that axis does increase and these guys sea the easy pickings.

Yes the government can reduce the cost of demorage by improving efficiency, but the FG need to strategize a plan to do this, please stop the ethnic excuse.

So what's the solution to insecurity?

You think you government can not solve that?

Don't You think the government can impose very low tarriff at onne to foster more trade?

We are not speaking about SE and SS accessibility, most of the trade and commerce in Nigeria is focused towards Lagos and lets not forget that fact.

Onne has it's uses, but it can not function outside other corrections being made.
Re: Onne Sea Port by kayfra: 4:23pm On Jan 18, 2016
Government has really tried to make this a viable port in the south east region but the commerce just isn't there. It's useful for the oil and gas industry and maybe it will pickup if investors build refineries in that region.
How much more can they waste before investing in more profitable regions...

"Nigeria has invested heavily in the development of Onne Port, upgrading both the Federal Lighter Terminal and the Federal Ocean Terminal and continues to improve quayside facilities, communication links and other services. At the same time the Private Sector has been heavily investing in the Free Zone. Over $300 million has been invested to-date."

If it is a FTZ, the better. Why are the SE importers still not using it? The truth is most importers will not use it even if the FG is paying them through incentives to use it. Maybe the economy of that region cannot sustain their importation through that port.

Insecurity can only be achieved by the concerted efforts of the leaders and youths of the region and not only through Govt coercion.

Insecurity is a perception that is not easy to correct. Before you can contract any foreigner to do any outside SW and Abuja, do you kn how much extra it will cost in comparison with what same foreigner would have charged for a job in SW and Abuja?

In a simple layman's language, which might be easier for you to understand -- you are paying premium for the insecurity.

That is the reason we should always be careful of our actions when we are shouting we are fighting for our rights under the name of militancy, kidnapping, robbery etc.

Yes, that is while Govt created Onne, Warri, Calabar and Koko.

Govt cannot force importers to use a particular port. The onus lies on the importers themselves. If the Igbos are truly the power house in importation as they used to claim, they can muster their strength to direct ships to Onne, except their level of importation is worthless.

Perhaps, this has shown that their importation is inconsequential to the economy of Nigeria, except proven otherwise.

not interested in your trying to tribalize this thread by always mentioning Igbo or se when the port in question is in ss..whether their importation is inconsequential is immaterial in this discussion after all not all port activities in apapa or tincan is done by swsterners..focus on issues of how lift the obvious burden Lagos ports is carrying for the nation

Don't have your panties in a bunch, I am using cardinal directions here. A viable PH port is closer to the commercial centers in that area of the country.

Lagos is the centre of commerce and very attractive for investors because of the relative security. In the early to mid 2000s the actions of MEND pushed soo.much investors away from that side, how would dangote build a mega refinery in PH when he can't be sure of the safety of his staff or investment.

The success of Lagos at the detriment of other states is because of the inability of these states to do the needful
