Nigerian pig industry isn't yet as sophisticated as the poultry industry, hence vaccines are hardly available or applied.

Lots of pig diseases exist the most devastating is ASF(African Swine Fever), no vaccine or antibiotic can prevent or treat this virus.

Most other diseases are managed using Antibiotics and good biosecurity measures.

Hello Fellow Farmers,

Happy New Year to you all!.. We pray that 2016 will be better than previous years.

I hope we have all drawn our goals and plans for 2016; Piggery requires alot of planning, research, we should all plan to improve our farms this year,
remember, the key to a successful piggery are : Good Breed, Good Feed, Good Management,.. i think this year we should include .. "Processing" ( adding value to it).

I will like to write on Management :

Lets start with a proper farm record this year, buy an exercise book or use Ms excel, or if you are a tech savvy, look for a software to manage your piggery .
A farm is as good has the records it keeps.. get to know your pigs, tag them, number them, either using a tattoo or buy tags to identify each pig and document it,ensure there is something to identify that particular sow or boar; keep the record somewhere, duplicate them somewhere else as back up.." I know alot of us have excellent memories, but remember, "the shortest pencil is better than the longest memory".

** Calculate your input, how much do you spend monthly, compare to your weight gain? Are you really making profit? If you are.. how much are you making? ( alot of pig farmers, aint making money, they just think they are) lets do it better this year.

*** Make New Year resolution to increase consumption:

This year, am committed to mentoring 4 farmers, who are willing to venture into pig farming and processing it to pork, bacon, sausage.
Am also committed to donating Pigs to , Orphanages, old peoples homes,Church programs, Youth programs.. any program that will increase awareness and reduce the stigmatization of pigs in Nigeria ( If you know of any, pls. email me).

I think we all have to try and do the something this year..lets all pig farmers donate 1 pig for a church program in 2016, slaughter it,
get someone to make pork suya and asun ,( am sure it will produce a sweet smelling aroma to God).
Pay your Pig farm tithe as a pig , donation to your church, instead of selling the pig and giving the money ( Pls dont tell your Pastor i said it o!).
If we all do this. we will increase consumption by atleast 50% and be more profitable..

** I will do less of nairaland write ups, has i prefer a more interactive platform i am shifting to the facebook group of PPAN, https://www.facebook.com/Pork-Producers-Association-of-Nigeria-1626885620896918/

This week, i will be in Nigeria, to inseminate a batch of sow, ( artificial insemination) i will share pictures of the process on facebook, as i remember the previous picture, i shared here didn't go well with the moderator.

Lets share more information on this group, let is not only be about sales, questions.. lets push this to the front page of nairaland.

Together we can do more

Huuuumm. Man where did u come from? Heaven I must guess. This is a business I pumped millions into 3 / 4 yrs ago. Was really passionate abt it cos was my late grandma trade which became the whole family bread and butter, so I was highly charged and passionate about it.
Tot I cldnt get it wrong, but running the business all the way from u.k was my on doing . the months I spent in Nija highlighted problems of the industry to me.
Fact is it is one trade u invest 3x to get 2x.
Market / marketing was very thin. Etc.etc.
Maybe one day I will reconsider my view but not @ the mo.

Hello to great Nigeria pig farmers.!
I have few questions to ask on the basis of pig production in the tropics where Nigeria as a country falls. I'll be grateful to ur ans cos I know they 're coming from practicing farmers.

Now to the questions:
1. What breeds are good for breeding, fattening in this part of the world?
2. Where n how can one get these breeds?
3. At what age do fatten pigs reach market size(slaughtering size) with good meat quality-if possible add picture in correlation to d age of the pig(s)?
4. Does change in season affects raising pig in Nigeria. If yes, which time f d yr is best to raise n fatten pigs?

I'll be waiting 4 ur replies. Thanks...

You should get be getting enough buyers from Uso, owo, and Oka, oba, Akungba, Ikare Akoko area (mind you, most christian living in Akoko municipalities consume pork). What is there is that, you should do your market survey to be sure before starting because I only know of Akure.

The problem now is that, most pig farmers cannot raise their animals in residential areas like before. They have to move to remote areas. I wonder why they should, because it is possible to operate a pig farm around residential areas without polluting the environment, and even generate extra income.

You can easily breed maggot using pig dung while the liquid waste is channeled into a sewage pit. (always avoid using more water when cleaning).I always advise farmer to use the residual water in the watering trough and wallowing pit for cleaning the pens. Sprinkle disinfectant solution on the floor after cleaning .
One secret that most people and farmers don't know about pigs is that, pigs are one of the neatest if not the neatest animals in the world. You can carry out this experiment:
1. Construct pens that are spacious enough and avoid overcrowding
2. Construct the feed and water trough in the same place, and make use of shower system to cool pigs' body.
3. Now observe the pigs every day; you will notice that, they will never urinate and excrete in the place they feed or take water. They will move to a corner distant from where they feed and take water, to do these.

It is what I know and I'll surely stand on my ground about this fact.
So, it is the design of the pens that has made your pigs to behave or look dirty.

NB: What you give your pigs will determine if you will get enough meat or more than enough fat (many people including me don't like taking animal fat). If you delight in giving PKC, cassava peels, kitchen waste, and junks to pigs, they will convert them to enough body fat with poor growth performance. It is better you get a good feed formula to prepare a good concentrate for them. With a good pig breeds (even if it is not pure breed) such as Duroc, Landrace, Poland China etc. you will surely get a good result.

You can read this article on Pig farming www.livestocking.com/facts-about-pig-farming-business

Pls can you help with good feed formula to prepare a good concentrate?

Many people have commented not only on Nairaland as well as our clients and invited guests to our farm on how healthy and strong our goats, pigs and cows look. In particular we gt singing praises for our pigs, thanks for the compliments. At Jessam farms we make sure we feed all our animals quality feed in abundance, we also make sure they have clean drinking water 24 hrs a day. If staff at Jessam can't drink the water we don't expect our herd to drink it either. Look at some pics of feed stacked at our farm, as well as medicines. Quality meet comes from quality animals.

If you want quality animals and poultry think Jessam........

To the best of my knowledge, yes. I used to buy imported bloodmeal in Lagos but I haven't bought this year because of the exchnge rate. I don't think it has been banned though.

Currently a kilo of liveweight is above 300 naira, i sold at 320 naira on Monday. Buyers from outside Nigeria are very eager and desperate at the moment cause our currency has fallen.

I learnt 1000 naira exchanges now for 2000 cefa as against 3000 cefa in d past.

There is no specific formula for pigs but you have age based nutritional requirements that can guide your formulation.

A good feed should contain adequate protein, energy, fibre, minerals and vitamins

We feed our pigs mainly corn for energy, PKC - palm kernel cake protein/energy,rice bran for fibre, soya for protein, Lysinee and amino acids. The percentages vary depending on age. piglets at weaning stage need much more protein say 18% feed mix compared to growers which is 13% feed mix. Lactating pigs have an extra 0.5kg of feed per piglet breast feeding. Also the amount of feed given depends on age and size of the pig. Also the rate of weight gain desired also determines the amount of feed to be given. Feeding must also be complemented by unlimited availability of clean water. without water feed conversion rates are poor. Here is a sample of a feed mix we use for our growers -
PKC 20%
Maize 60%
Soya Bean Meal 9.5%
Fish Meal 3%
Diacalcium phospate 1.5%
premix 0.2%
salt 0.3%

Excellent posts here and I must say, you guys are really superb, please I want to get some clarification, is PKC same as the palm kernel fiber we get from palm oil extraction? This is because I have a palm oil mill and I want to diversify into piggery, already acquired the land (in Ogun state, very close to Nestle flowergate factory, cos of feed) and am using this platform as my to-do guide.
Please help with what PKC means in layman's term. Plus I will appreciate information on pitfalls to avoid while embarking on this investment.
I will like to inquire about the possibility of having some experience in this before going into it real time, any connection to piggery owners?
Thanks in anticipation.
