The omo'N oba you're talking about is the name adopted by the present oba (Erediauwa) and not a title. Every obas adopts other names once crowned.

Lmao... grin

You people and adoption, na wah!

Yoruba adopted Oba and then you adopted Omo n'Oba...please hush if you have nothing cogent to contribute.

You need to know the fact. Which is Oduduwa wasnt born in ile ife. He migrated from somewhere. So the question is where did he migrate from?
I am a yoruba man and I am not ashamed to tell the truth.

The yoruba kingdom had existed before Oduduwa settled there. So where did Oduduwa come from?
Why did he send his son to rule over Benin kingdom?

Try and see the connection and analogy in this. TO be king you must be royalty by blood line. Hence he sent his son to Benin to rule over his ancestral throne..... You do the math..

And please Oduduwa didnt come from Mecca or fall from the skies with a chain.

One of the problem with this part of Africa is the lack of detailed historical record and research

OPCNAIRALAND:

You got it mixed up pardner.

Bini is a migrant group to Edoland. Binis are the State Rulers that emigrated from Ile Ife and ruled over Edoland.

The pre State, under rulership of Ogiso ended its dynastic power when the Ile Ife State Rulers arrived and established a new dynasty, cults and Statehood.

There is nothing in traditional Edo custom called Olokun. This was Yoruba cult, so was Ifa and Obatala, which the migrant rulers established and which you practice till today.

Yoruba did to Edo what Fulani did to Hausa, except our language persisted as the court vernacular until very recently....in fact right around the Independence of Nigeria...whereas Fulani adopted the language of the conquered.

Separate Bini from Edo sharp sharp! Edo is not Yoruba but Bini is part and parcel Yoruba and nothing you can do to erase it.

this topic has been argued right from when I knew nairaland.

it will never stop. if you see them in culture section arguing this, you go fear.

I believe its more realistic that oduduwa did not fall from the sky, he came from somewhere- probably Bini to rule the Yoruba people.
he was a prince(maybe banished) from Bini.

that's why he sent his son to rule Bini.

so, Yoruba people had their culture before oduduwa.
an exchange of cultures just happened then.

We should ask them self, since they claim Oba is a recent adaptation by Yoruba to then tell us how we came about the name prefix.

Obafemi
Obayemi
Obadare
Obaseki

The Chief said the "adaptation" started in the 1950s. So the question is did any body bear Obafemi, Obayomi, Obasanjo, Obaseki before the 50s? Lolz!

YOU ARE TOTALLY WRONG, OMO N' OBA MEANS THE CHILD THAT IS OBA(KING)

The child that is Oba is an identifier, not a titular.

Come up with something else please.

You say this 'Owodo' fellow was a Prince of Benin whose father was an 'Oba' and that he 'wandered' into some uncharted forest region called 'Ife' bearing all the wisdom his father's kingdom...now, by logical deduction, shouldn't the 'Ooni' of Ife be the 'Oba' of Ife?....

Bini didn't emigrate from Ife... from reliable accounts, there was already a Bini ruled by ogisos at the time we had Ile-ife too.
It was a run-away prince from Bini named Izoduwa that found his way to Ile-ife after wandering and was made king as there were divinations that the next king of Ile-ife will appear from the bush.
He was re-christened Oduduwa in Ife. Bini kingdom ran into problems and when they consulted Oracle, it was said that the only solution was to recall a wrongly banished prince - Izoduwa back into the kingdom. Oduduwa couldn't follow them when they came to beg him but sent his son - Oramiyan who abolished the ogiso reign and started kingship.
Oranmiyan left after a while too and returned to Ile-ife but met a king on the throne of Ife, he left to establish Oyo kingdom.
************************************************

This line is supported in both Bini and Oyo kingdom history who believe they have close ties through the common Oranmiyan rule.

I learned from history that the Edo people were subject (slaves; they are been used for farming activities by the Yorubas.) to the Yoruba Kingdom and due to the large expense of the Kingdom, that was what necessitated Yoruba King in Bini.

if wah u say is true, Y is it that oduduwa is more reverenced in Edo traditions than Yoruba's. You will hear Edo names like Osakeoduwa, Okoduwa...etc but not d same with Yoruba names. I think d Edo chief is right.

You are right to an extent, but we have also odua people's Congress, odua holdings. .. It's a way of preserving it too not necessarily by names

if none of those happened,

why did the one you prefer happen?

preferential history.

It is sentiments if you protect a part that suites you and crown it with argument that favour you.

Leave oduduwa out of it and try to rewrite the story.

Don't borrow from your adversary.

some folks here who were born yesterday are already claiming they know more than history smh! comparing the oba of bini with any other western king is an insult of the highest order, if fact in terms of power and class he is superior to the rest. For those who are willing to learn more why not peruse the article below for enlightenment.
