Yes, I guess that's the point. I just wonder if its a right direction to take. Among his peers, I'm not sure Malaika has the largest fan base - or even the second or third largest for that matter.

Aside that, I'm not sure building your brand to become synonymous with "local yoruba people" (to borrow your own words) is a smart idea.

The game is about sales,with malakia the ordinary Lagos tout believes they have their own brand ,what this means is that tecno wants to associate with the poor and this may cause their elite customers to dump them but among the massive locals they are aiming to be the number 1

That exactly is my point! How much spending power does the 'ordinary Lagos tout' (again, to borrow your words) have? If 16 of them buy tecno's smartphones for N15,000 each, that is equal to one person buying a single samsung galaxy S6 edge.

Smartphones, to a great extent, are luxury items. I think it would have made more sense to strive to position tecno as a top tier (or, at worst, mid-tier) brand.

I will disagree with you on this one .
Firstly the number of potential buyers among the cadre of ppl targeted by tecno far outstrips and out numbers the elite group by 10 to 1 ,if not more. The number of ppl that can afford 15k naira is far more than the number of ppl that can afford 50k phones. So it makes business sense to target the 15k ppl more than the 50k most especially innan economy like Nigeria.
Secondly,by signing malaika and making him project the image of tecno among the locals,they will see tecno as their own brand ,they will also have the feeling that they are enjoying what the rich educated ppl are enjoying.we are talking in terms of the whole south west ,that is millions of phones sales every quarter. Tecno has seen that already ppl see them as cheap chinko product so it is better they move along that line . The rich educated that can afford expensive phones have choices to choose from and to be honest tecno will not be among the top on their list.dont be surprised if tecno signs another local artisite from the east and north too. If they do their marketing very well they will be the number 1,they have identified their target market and they are going for them full force
