Arsenal forward Alex Iwobi is set to make his competitive debut for the Nigerian national team, despite reports early on Tuesday (22 March) suggesting the Gunners starlet had been hospitalised with food poisoning. The Nigeria Football Federation has tweeted that the 19-year-old just has a minor bout of flu and will be available for the key Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Egypt on Friday.

Iwobi played his first game for the Super Eagles in November, a friendly against DR Congo, having previously represented England at U17, U17 and U18 levels. The winger, however, decided to commit his international future to Nigeria by making a competitive start against Nigeria.

Alarm bells were sounded on Tuesday though when there were reports the Arsenal youngster was ruled out with food poisoning, sustained after eating a salad.

Nigeria's manager seemingly confirmed the news, adding that the player had missed training.
Arsenal forward had been missed the training session.

"He suffered from food poisoning and so was not part of the training. But his condition is stable," Siasia said, according to The Sun.

However, the Nigeria Football Federation has now clarified the situation on Twitter, saying that the player just has a bout of the cold and will feature against Egypt.

The news is a big boost for Arsene Wenger after the 19-year-old broke through into the first team in recent weeks, scoring his first goal for the Gunners during the 2-0 victory at Everton just days after a surprising starting appearance in the Champions League against Arsenal.

Super Eagles battle harsh weather in Kaduna

Samson Siasia's men got to the Afcon qualifier venue on Tuesday and are battling the unfavourable weather as they seek to silence Egypt on Friday

Super Eagles have arrived Kaduna and are facing a harsh weather as the team prepares to play seven-time African kings Egypt in Friday's Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The team trained on Tuesday evening at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium after their trip from Abuja where they had commenced preparations.

Goal gathered that the climate in the northern part of the country is scorching and this was echoed by Watford’s striker Odion Ighalo who tweeted that the sun in Kaduna could ‘bleach’ the skin.

“The sun here for Kaduna fit bleach person.”Ighalo tweeted.
All the players except Elderson Echiejile trained on Tuesday evening under the watchful eyes of coach Samson Siasia.

Arsenal's Alex Iwobi also took part in the session after shrugging off the food poisoning that sidelined him earlier in the day. The 19-year-old's presence at the Super Eagles training put an end to reports that he was still mulling an England decision.

He walked around the pitch a few times before he was put through aerobic exercises and light ball juggling. Siasia’s men are expected to continue training on Wednesday morning to fine-tune strategies for the Pharaoh’s who have revealed their aspiration of caging the Eagles before their own fans.

Egypt top Group G with six points while Nigeria are in second place. A win for the 2013 African kings would brighten their chances of qualifying for Gabon 2017, while Hector Cuper’s men would be staging a return to the biennial African championship after three successive misses.

DETAILS OF HOW THE EAGLES FIRST TRAINING
UNFOLDED IN KADUNA

Date: March 22nd, 2016. Training Session: Evening
Training Duration: 2hrs
...................................................................

The Super Eagles of Kaduna had their first training
session at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium and Owngoalnigeria.com was there and now bring to you the main talking points of the session.

22 players and three goalkeppers participated in the
two hour session with Alex Iwobi watching on as he recovers from a stomach upset issue while Elderson Echiejile missed out as he was yet to arrive the team camp (He later arrived by around 9pm).

The training started with light drills with the ball
before the players were divided into two teams
seperated by bibs and made to play within a tight
space with the coach Samson Siasia also participating in the exercise.

Later the three goalkeppers namely Carl Ikeme,Daniel Akpeyi and Ikechukwu Ezenwa left the outfield players to have drills with their goalkepper trainer Alloy Agu at one end of the pitch.

Siasia later took a back seat and allowed his assistant Emmanuel Amuneke to handle a tactical drill that involves wingers and full backs whipping crosses in from passes supplied by those in the middle to the strikers.

Ighalo was particularly wasteful although he scored
more goals (4) than Fanendo Adi who only twiced put the ball in the net from crosses coming in from the wings.

After the drill they were then splitted into two teams of 11 players each and had a short practice match which ended 1-1 with Victor Moses scoring for the all white off a cross from Adi while Kelechi Iheanacho leveled scores for the team in bib with a neat low drive that flew past Ikeme.

Moses Simon was particularly impressive playing
from the left of the team in bib effortlessly getting
past Etim Matthew
who was playing the right full back role of the all white team.
Stanley Amuzie also showed his ball playing abilities
as a defender and contributed a lot to the attack by
constantly overlapping while Aminu Umar was way
too busy, lively and daring.

THE TEAMS:

(All White): Carl Ikeme, Etim Matthew, Stanley
Amuzie, Efe Ambrose, Godfrey Obaboana, Okechukwu Azubuike, Ifeanyi Matthew, Aminu Umar, Victor
Moses, Aaron Samuel, Fanendo Adi.

(In Bib): Daniel Akpeyi, Chibuzor Okonkwo, Shehu Abdullahi, Kalu Orji, Eddy Onazi, Mikel Obi, Kelechi Iheanacho, Ogenekaro Etebo, Moses Simon, Ahmed Musa, Odion Ighalo.

Iwobi: I’m Ready To Face Egypt After “Maddest” Food Poisoning

By James Agberebi:

Alex Iwobi has allayed fears over his availability for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Egypt after suffering from food poisoning.

Iwobi missed the Super Eagles first and last training sessions in Abuja as a result of food poisoning he suffered on Monday.

But the 19-year-old Arsenal product has come out to state that he is okay and ready to feature in the game against Egypt.

He wrote on his Twitter handle: “Had the maddest food poisoning but I am good now and feeling ready for the Egyptian match.”

Earlier, coach Samson Siasia had confirmed that Iwobi has recovered from the food poisoning and will be fit to play.

Meanwhile, Iwobi is currently in Kaduna with the Eagles who left Abuja Tuesday morning.

Iwobi, scored his first ever goal for Arsenal in their 2-0 win against Everton at Goodison Park, in last Saturday’s Premier League game.

NIGERIA 7-4 EGYPT: Super Eagles Dominate Pharaohs Head-To-Head

On Friday, the Super Eagles will host Egypt in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Kaduna. The reverse fixture comes up next Tuesday.

It is a crucial game for the Eagles as anything short of the three points may spell doom in their quest to qualify for the 2017 AFCON.

Ahead of the game, Completesportsnigeria.com’s JAMES AGBEREBI chronicles past encounters between the two countries…

NIGERIA 2-1 EGYPT (1960, INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLY MATCH)

Nigeria’s first ever meeting against Egypt was in an international friendly on January 1st, 1960, in Nigeria.

Egypt, who were then two-time Africa Cup of Nations winners (1957 and 1959), lost 2-1 to their hosts.

EGYPT 6-3 NIGERIA (GROUP STAGE GHANA 1963 AFCON)

After missing out of the previous three editions of the Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria finally debuted at the fourth edition in

1963 hosted by Ghana.

And their first ever game at the AFCON was against Egypt in group B. Sudan was the other team in Nigeria’s group.

Egypt trounced the Nigerian team 6-3 with Hassan El-Shazly scoring four goals, while Mohamed Morsi Hussein had a brace.

Sudan completed Nigeria’s miserable debut with a 4-0 thumping in their second group game.

NIGERIA 4-2 EGYPT (SEMI-FINAL, ALL AFRICA GAMES, LAGOS 1973)

At the 1973 All Africa Games held in Lagos, the Nigerian football team met Egypt in the semi-final after topping their group that also had Algeria and Tanzania.

Nigeria won the match 4-2 and advanced into the final where they beat Guinea 2-0 to claim the gold medal.

NIGERIA 3-2 EGYPT (FINAL ROUND, ETHIOPIA 1976 AFCON)

For the second time, Nigeria met Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations. This time, it was at the 1976 edition hosted in Ethiopia.

This time, Nigeria avenged their 1963 lost by winning 3-2, to finish third. Haruna Ilerika (two goals) and Mudashiru Lawal, were the scorers for Nigeria.

Morocco were crowned champions for the first time since taking part in the Africa Cup of Nations.

NIGERIA 4-0 EGYPT (1977, 1st leg, WORLD CUP QUALIFIER)

One of the closest times Nigeria ever came to qualifying for the FIFA World Cup was the 1978 World Cup in Argentina.
Unfortunately, Nigeria lost out to Tunisia, losing 1-0 no thanks to a Godwin Odiye own goal inside the National Stadium, Lagos.

Prior to meeting Tunisia in the final round of the qualifiers, Nigeria had met Egypt in the earlier round.

In the first leg meeting, Nigeria triumphed 4-0 with the goals coming from Segun Odegbami (two) skipper Christian Chukwu and John Nwadioha.

EGYPT 3-1 NIGERIA (1977, 2nd leg, WORLD CUP Qualifier)

With a 4-0 deficit to overturn, Egypt got a win against Nigeria in the reverse fixture of their World Cup qualifier.

But the damage had already been done in the first leg that despite winning 3-1, it wasn’t enough as Nigeria advanced into the final round 5-3 on aggregate.

NIGERIA 1-0 EGYPT (GROUP STAGE, NIGERIA 1980 AFCON)

Nigeria hosted the 1980 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations and had Tanzania, Egypt and Cote d’Ivoire in group A.

With a win and draw, Nigeria took on Egypt in their final group game and won 1-0 following a goal by Okey Isima in the 15th minute of the match.

The Nigerian team was to go on and win the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time, beating Algeria 3-0 in the final.

NIGERIA 1-1 EGYPT (1983, INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLY MATCH)

A friendly match between Nigeria and Egypt was arranged in 1983 in Nigeria.

But there was no victor, no vanquished as both teams settled for a 1-1 draw.

NIGERIA 8-7 EGYPT ON PENALTIES AFTER 2-2 DRAW (SEMI-FINAL, AFCON 1984)

In the semi-final of the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, Egypt raced to a 2-0 lead through goals from Imad Suleiman and Taher Abouzeid.

Nigeria came fighting back in the second half and leveled the score, thanks to strikes from Stephen Keshi and Ali Bala.

And in the penalty shootout, Nigeria triumphed 8-7 and advanced into the final where they lost 3-1 to Cameroon.

NIGERIA 0-0 EGYPT (GROUP STAGE, MAROC 1988 AFCON)

Nigeria made a return to the Africa Cup of Nations in 1988 after missing the 1986 edition in Egypt.

To advance into the semi-final in 1988, they had to negotiate a group that had Cameroon, Kenya and Egypt.

A 3-0 win against Kenya and a 1-1 draw against Cameroon, in their first two games, ensured that all that was needed against Egypt in their last group game was a draw. And that was what they eventually got, a 0-0 draw which sealed their passage into the last four.

NIGERIA 1-0 EGYPT (GROUP STAGE, ALGERIA 1990 AFCON)

A largely home-based Nigerian side featured at the 1990 Africa Cup of Nations and got bashed 5-1 against hosts Algeria in the opening game.

The Nigerians, under Clemens Westerhof, managed to pick themselves up and won 1-0 against Egypt in their second group game courtesy a Rashidi Yekini first half header.

The team went all the way to the final but lost again but this time a respectable scoreline, 1-0, to Algeria.

NIGERIA 0-0 EGYPT (GROUP STAGE, TUNISIA 1994 AFCON)

Nigeria won the Africa Cup of Nations for the second time when the competition was staged in Tunisia in 1994.

One of the teams Nigeria faced enroute to winning the Africa Cup of Nations was Egypt in the group stage.

With Nigeria and Egypt winning their opening games against Gabon 3-0 and 4-0 respectively, the game between both teams was to see who would top the group.

The game ended 0-0, with Egypt topping the group and Nigeria as runners-up.

NIGERIA 1-1 EGYPT (2003, INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLY MATCH)

Nigeria and Egypt’s paths did not cross again until 2003 inside the National Stadium in Lagos in an international friendly game.

Egypt took a 1-0 first half lead but Temple Moneke equalised for Nigeria with a long-range left-foot free-kick.

EGYPT 3-1 NIGERIA (GROUP STAGE, ANGOLA 2010 AFCON)

Gunning for their third straight Africa Cup of Nations win, Egypt were grouped with Nigeria alongside Mozambique and Benin Republic in the preliminary round.

Chinedu Obasi gave Nigeria the lead but Emad Moteab restored parity for Egypt before the end of the first half.

Two more goals in the second half from Ahmed Hassan and Mohamed ‘Gedo’ Nagy gave Egypt a 3-1 win.

EGYPT 3-2 NIGERIA (2012, INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLY MATCH)

Following the sacking of Samson Siasia in 2011, Stephen Keshi was saddled with the responsibility of rebuilding a new Nigerian senior national team.

To achieve this, a series of friendly games was arranged, and one of such games was against Egypt in Dubai.

Egypt won the game 3-2 thanks to a late goal from Ahmed Hassan Mekki

Ighalo: I’ll Give More Than 100% Against Egypt

Super Eagles striker Odion Ighalo has vowed to give more than 100 per cent commitment on the pitch against Egypt in Friday's 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Kaduna, and the Watford striker hopes that team work will win the match for the Super Eagles.

The Eagles trail Egypt by two points, and must secure all three points to brighten their chance of qualifying for next year's AFCON in Gabon.

According to cafonline.com, Ighalo, who is Watford's top scorer in the English Premier League this season, states he is ready to give his all to make sure the Eagles win.

“I'm equally looking forward to the AFCON qualifier against Egypt like every Nigerian,” Ighalo says.

“These matches (against Egypt) are important and crucial towards our aspirations of playing at the next tournament in Gabon."

Ighalo adds: “My attitude towards these two matches against Egypt would be similar to Watford’s. I will give my best and play with a lot of determination. We know the matches against Egypt are not going to be easy but with determination, we shall be victorious.

“Against Egypt, it is not only about counting on Odion Ighalo. It is going to be about team effort and I want to believe as a team, we have what it takes to confront Egypt.

“For instance at Watford, if I don't score others still do because football is a team effort; and I want to believe with our collective effort, we would get good results against Egypt.”

Commenting on the thought of working with a new coach following the sudden resignation of Sunday Oliseh and the appointment of Samson Siasia, Ighalo assures he is ready to work with any coach.

Ighalo pledges: “I will as usual give more than 100 per cent irrespective of the fact that we have new coaches in charge of the team. There is nothing new and I would go out there and do my best like I have always done under previous coaches.”

He hailed his club manager Quique Sanchez Flores for his support during his goal drought, stating that playing at Wembley is would be a dream come through.

“The coach has been motivating me and telling me to keep working hard and that the goal will come at the right time. Eventually, it (goal) came against Arsenal and I'm happy about it. Personally, it would be a dream come for me playing at Wembley.”

“It has always been a dream to play at the Wembley Stadium because it is regarded as the traditional home of football in England. My focus now is on the coming matches against Egypt and as I said earlier, our collective efforts would see us through.”

The Super Eagles beat Chad 2-0 in Kaduna before playing out a barren draw with Tanzania in Dar es Salaam in their two previous games.

Mainz Reveal Injured Leon Balogun Will Not Travel To Nigeria

Mainz defender Leon Balogun has started his individual recovery plan after picking up a muscular injury days leading up to the clash against Werder Bremen.

According to the Bundesliga club’s official webpage, the stopper trained on Tuesday with Yoshinori Muto and athletics coach Jonas Grünewald.

The Nigeria Football Federation is hopeful that Balogun will be available for selection next Tuesday in the reverse fixture against Egypt but his prospects are bleak, with Mainz stating officially that he will remain in Germany as a result of the injury.

The 27-year-old was called up for the Super Eagles last competitive fixtures, the World Cup qualifiers against Swaziland last November, but pulled out of the squad due to a knee injury.

forgiveness:

I hope the coach will not base his selection on sentiments but on the current form of players in the camp. If Odion shows better quality than the younger ones during training, why should the coach keep him on the bench?
Note I was referring to the Olympics team. Because that is competition that will help these younger ones showcase their talent and further prepare them for greater tasks.

EAGLES TRAINING: TOP PERFORMERS FROM DAY
ONE

*According to OwnGoalNigeria.
......................................................................

Owngoalnigeria.com was at the two training sessions of the Super Eagles held in Abuja and Kaduna respectively and we bring to you the top performers from the session.

1. JOHN OBI MIKEL

Appears to be the fittest player in the Super Eagles
team at the moment thanks to the games he is
getting at Chelsea.
His mobility has been encouraging and his willingness to win possession after losing it is something we noticed during the two sessions in
addition to his quick thinking and ability to hit long
passes.
More importantly during the shooting exercise and in training drills his shots were more accurately than most of his teammates.

2. CARL IKEME

Tall and appears uninterested at times but by far the best goalkeeper in camp at the moment, in the two sessions his shot stopping abilities were vivid and above all his command of his penalty area when
coming out for crosses was also noticed by our
reporter.
In the practice game between themselves yesterday
he showed his cat like reflex with a double save off
shots from Odion Ighalo and Mikel Obi.

3. AMINU UMAR

A tireless runner for the Super Eagles in training and his work rate was so vivid going by how he covers almost every blade of the pitch during sessions.
The Osmanlispor forward is looking like a surebet to gatecrash the starting line up for the game against Egypt.

4. MOSES SIMON

Wasn’t at his best during the first session in Abuja
but back at the city he grew up which is Kaduna he
was his usual self.
Tormented Etim Matthew by going past the Enugu
Rangers full back with ease and during tactical drills
between midfielders,wingers and strikers his
deliveries from the left were top notch.

5. EFE AMBROSE

He has taken the training by storm despite not been a regular for Celtic of Scotland in the last two months his fitness level is awesome.

So far he has been calm and commanding in his
defending and one area we noticed he has improved
on is his passes from the back as during the practice
match he twice hit passes from range that went to
their target.
His form in training should gladden the hearts of
Super Eagles fans owing to the injury crisis rocking
the team in defence with Leon Balogun and Kenneth
Omeruo set to miss out.

The ex-Golden Eaglets star has fond memories of the International Champions Cup, having found the back of the net against AC Milan in 2014 and another Italian opposition Roma the following year.

Manchester City’s clash with United takes place 19 days before the start of the 2016-17 Premier League.

IHEANACHO DISPLAYS FINISHING PROWESS IN
SUPER EAGLES TRAINING

.........................................................................

Manchester City's 19 year old Nigeria international
Kelechi Iheanacho showed a lot of the reasons during training with the Super Eagles why he is so highly rated when it comes to goal scoring.

The Korea 2013 U-17 golden ball winner is at the
moment scoring with most of his shots at goal during practice as his shootings are usually precise with pace and power.

During yesterday’s drill he scored against all the
three goalkeppers in camp with the team and even
when one of his efforts was saved by Carl Ikeme it
brought out the best in the Wolverhampton
Wanderers shot stopper.

Iheanacho during the practice game yesterday played at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium drew his team level with a goal that once again show why he is such a top level teen.

Playing in a two man attack alongside Odion Ighalo
he raced onto a through ball from Mikel Obi took a
step past Godfrey Obaboana and just when it appears he has lost the chance blasted a left footed
shot that flew past Ikeme leaving him with no chance.

It’s yet to be seen if his good form will earn him a
spot in the starting line up or probably a substitute
appearance in the game against Egypt on the 25th
and 29th in Kaduna and Akexandria respectively.

VIDEO: Fanendo Adi hopes for opportunity to nail Egypt

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smMwkF9z_SQ
By Lolade Adewuyi in Kaduna

The Portland Timbers striker expects the Super Eagles to defeat the Pharaohs in Friday’s Afcon qualifier in Kaduna as well as longing for his debut

Nigeria striker Fanendo Adi hopes the Super Eagles can earn all three points on offer when they welcome Egypt to the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna for Friday’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

The 25-year-old got his maiden invitation to the Eagles on the back of his impressive performance at Portland Timbers where he scored 18 goals in 2015 and also won the MLS Cup. He’s scored thrice in the 2016 season and hopes to bring his 6’4in frame to contribute to the task at hand.

“It’s a good experience,” Adi told Goal about his time in the Super Eagles. “My first session [on Tuesday morning] was great.”

Adi created an assist for Victor Moses in the team’s second training in Kaduna on Tuesday evening, and the striker describes the session as “very impressive” with coach Samson Siasia looking on closely and being spoilt for choice ahead of Friday’s big clash.

Egypt lead Group G by six points, two ahead of second-placed Nigeria making this encounter a must-win for the Super Eagles.

Adi says: “We’re expecting a tough game, they will come with a game plan to play and try to pick a point from here but we need to approach the game in a way that suits us, in a way we can play for ourselves and try to get the maximum three points.

“It’s going to be a tough one we just need to do the right things to get through.”

With an established favourite starting striker in Watford’s Odion Ighalo, Adi would also have to contend with Aaron Samuel for a place in the team and the US-based striker is taking in the moment quite nicely.

“It’s very humbling,” he said. “And I know it’s up to the coach to make the decision on who to play but I would try to do my best to help the team even if it is for one or two minutes.”

Alex Iwobi’s ‘soft stomach’ is cause for pepper soup jokes in Nigeria camp

Alex Iwobi

By Lolade Adewuyi in Kaduna

The Arsenal youngster has overcome his food poisoning experience but it might have endeared him to many of the other players in camp

Nigerian humour is a good way to pass through tough times, as Alex Iwobi must have learnt in the past couple of days.

After the Arsenal forward came down with food poisoning and missed Tuesday morning’s training with the Super Eagles in Abuja, team mates rallied round him with encouraging words, according to team media officer Toyin Ibitoye.

However, the older players did not fail to point out that he was the architect of his own problems by choosing to consume pepper soup in camp knowing he has a ‘soft stomach’.

Iwobi was born in Nigeria but was raised in England where there is less emphasis on consumption of chili pepper in meals, unlike in Nigeria where chili is a staple in several dishes.

Yet other reports claim that Iwobi’s ailment was caused by the consumption of salad at the team’s hotel.

Midfielder Ogenyi Onazi seems to have taken the youngster under his wings while Chelsea’s John Obi Mikel threw a bottle of water in a playful banter at the Arsenal man during a break in training on Tuesday evening.

After overcoming the crisis and having a short physical examination by the team’s physio in Kaduna, Iwobi later confirmed via Twitter that the worst was over.

“Had the maddest food poisoning but I am good now and feeling ready for the Egyptian match,” he wrote.

The young man must have learnt his lessons, never underestimate the power of pepper soup or Nigerian salad. He would hope to make it all count against Egypt on Friday.

ODUAMADI FAVOURITE SHIRT NUMBER TAKEN BY ANOTHER NIGERIAN AT HJK HELSINKI

Nnamdi Oduamadi who was yesterday unveiled by his new loan side HJK Helsinki is yet to decide on a shirt number as his favourite number has been taken.

Oduamadi is a big lover of the shirt number 20 and he has worn it for most of his club and national team career but the number is not vacant as Vincent Onovo another Nigerian at the team has taken the number.

Onovo is a 20 year old Nigerian who recently moved to the Finnish side from another team in Finland Inter Turku where he spent the last season and has so far played in three cup games for the team in Oduamadi’s favourite jersey number.

The AC Milan loanee will start training with his new teammates today where he will train alongside Onovo and the other Nigerian at the team Taiye Taiwo.

It is expected he will pick a shirt number before the end of this week.

EXCLUSIVE: IWOBI SPEAKS OUT ABOUT INJURY REPORT

Arsenal teen sensation Alex Iwobi has reacted to rumours making rounds about reports that he is suffering from a knock picked up from Arsenal’s last Premier League game against Everton.

They have been varying reports about the reason behind his absence from the Eagles first two training sessions ahead of the game against Egypt with some claiming he is nursing a knock while others are of the opinion he is having stomach upset.

In an exclusive unofficial chat with our reporter at the team hotel when he came to get water owngoalnigeria.com correspondent asked him if it’s true he is carrying a knock or suffering from stomach upset.

“Am not carrying any knock am fine, I missed training yesterday because of something I ate that caused me stomach pain but am fine now” the soft spoken lad told owngoalnigeria.com.

He sat out yesterday’s training of the team but did light works with the team’s physiotherapist after interim coach Samson Siasia stopped him from joining the rest of the team in full training.

Nigeria must beat Egypt on Good Friday to stay alive

Nigeria vs Egypt at the 2010 AFCON in Angola. Egypt won 3-1

by Samm Audu

Nigeria will be hard pressed to beat Egypt on Good Friday so as to get their AFCON 2017 qualifying campaign back on track.

Seven-time African champions Egypt are top of Group G with six points from two matches, Nigeria are two points behind on four points with only the overall group winners guaranteed automatic passage to Gabon 2017.

Tanzania have a point, while Chad are bottom of the standings without any points.

The standings will be much clearer after Nigeria and Egypt play again in Alexandria on Tuesday.

As always Nigeria’s build-up for these crucial matches have been chaotic after coach Sunday Oliseh quit his post a month ago, citing lack of support from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and several violations of his contract.

Olympic team coach Samson Siasia was appointed as caretaker coach to be assisted by Salisu Yusuf and the country’s U20 coach Emmanuel Amuneke.

A bogus call-up list of 42 players has now been cut down to 23 players following injuries to Europe-based defenders Kenneth Omeruo and Leon Balogun as well as a major clear-out of the players who feature in the domestic league.

Siasia is now most likely to line up most of the players he has previously worked with like Chelsea star Mikel Obi as well as players from the Olympic team like Oghenekaro Etebo, Stanley Amuzie and Azubuike Okechukwu.

He has admitted his biggest concern would be how the players from overseas cope with the heat in the northern city of Kaduna, where this match will be played.

“I don’t know why Nigerians are so afraid of Egypt. They should be worried about us,” Siasia wondered at a recent briefing.

“The players are very positive and for me, it is really how can we play well in the heat?”

Kick-off time has now been moved to 5pm local time to ensure the home team do not struggle in the baking heat.

Nigeria players remain bullish about their chances of victory.

“We will give all we have on Friday, we will give it a big push,” vowed Odion Ighalo, who has snapped out of a month-long goals drought with his English Premier League side Watford just in time for these matches.

Nigeria skipper Ahmed Musa admitted it will be a difficult game, which they have to win.

“It’s a very important match, which we have to win, but we also know it won’t be easy,” said the CSKA Moscow forward.

Egypt are equally under pressure to qualify for Gabon after their last appearance in Angola 2010.

Argentine coach Hector Cuper, whose job is on the line, has named as many as nine players from league and cup winners Zamalek with bitter rivals Ahly also providing a good number of the players for these matches.

The Pharaohs will play as a team while also relying on the individual brilliance of their overseas-based pros led by AS Roma forward Mohamed Salah and Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny.

Egypt striker Ahmed Hassan ‘Koka’ said he expects Egypt to play as a unit.

“The team don’t rely on foreign-based players as Mohamed Salah, Mohamed Elneny, Mahmoud Trezeguet, Amr Warda and myself; the team consist of 11 players,” Koka told Sada El-Balad Channel.

“Players who play for the national team make every effort to fully represent their country.”

‘Koka’ has scored 13 goals this season for Portuguese club Sporting Braga since his transfer from Rio Ave.

Nigeria and Egypt have met 16 times with Nigeria winning seven times, Egypt with five victories, while there have been four draws between them.

Their first meeting was a friendly on January 1, 1960, which Nigeria won 2-1.

The Egyptians have won their last two meetings – 3-1 on January 12, 2010, in an AFCON 2010 clash, and 3-2 in a friendly on April 12, 2012.

Arsenal starlet Iwobi in full Eagles training after food poisoning

Alex Iwobi

Arsenal youngster Alex Iwobi has put behind him an episode of food poisoning that forced him to skip training on Tuesday after he returned to train fully with the squad Wednesday in Kaduna.

Iwobi, who described his experience as “maddest food poisoning”, could not train with the Eagles in Abuja Tuesday morning, but he returned to train on his own in Kaduna later on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, he showed he has fully recovered from the unfortunate incident as he was one of 23 players who trained inside the Ahmadu Bello Stadium.

They played a two-a-side game with Emmanuel Amuneke punctuating the session to dish out corrections.

Iwobi, 19, has played twice for Nigeria in friendlies last year, but he has yet to play an official match since he switched his international allegiance from England.

Benin edge South Sudan in Juba

Benin held on to beat South Sudan 2-1 in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier in Juba on Wednesday.

Victory propels Benin top of Group C with Mali set to face Equatorial Guinea in Bamako on Friday.

The Bright Stars have continued to improve under the watchful guidance of South Korean Sang-Jae Lee, but fell behind after 16 minutes. Westerlo forward Frederic Gounongbe continued his good scoring form, striking home the opener.

Second-half substitute Steve Mounie doubled the Squirrels lead with 15 minutes remaining before South Sudan pulled a goal back in the 88th minute.

In the presence of FIFA president Gianni Infantino, who arrived in the country on his birthday to open the South Sudan Football Association's new office, the hosts pushed forward for the equaliser, but ultimately failed in their attempt.

The reverse fixture is scheduled for Stade de l'Amitié in Cotonou on Sunday.
