@abdulwastecx. .....whats delaying the publication of the results? What is the root cause of vertical cracks and what is the root cause of horizontal cracks? Professionals and builders on this thread, anyone care to enlighten us? No knowledge is lost. 1 Like |

n3xt: I slept off yesterday... Let me give you more hints 1. These cracks were experienced only on the first floor wall 2. This wall is a load bearing wall (carrying a roof load closer to the edge of the building. 3. This wall has no head beam connected to adjacent columns or pillars to help distributes load to the building frame (load to columns which is passed down to ground floor columns and subsequently to the foundation footings). 4. The building was a semi detached of two flats, these cracks were experienced in one of the balcony, there was am identical balcony in the other units without these cracks. So, we have to check the difference between method of construction of unit A to unit B. Unit A balcony wall rest on a slab beam and wall beneath and experienced no Cracks Unit B balcony rest on a slab without beam and wall beneath (space below is a living room) and experienced the cracks highlighted above. |

n3xt: More features of the cracks : most of the vertical cracks originated from the top of walls and progressing downward. Horizontal cracks occurs on both face of the wall. Honey two wall were affected and these walls have two things in common, lacks of under underlying beam or wall and both carries roof load closer to the outside of the house |

abdulwastecx: abdulwastecx lets get a clearer perspective of your structural analysis so that we can follow you: The building started out as a two wing Bungalow and it's now a Duplex right? If this is the case, how was the structural conversion and the delivery of the project. How was the foundation of the bungalow transformed or improved to spread the load of the duplex? It may be the case that a section of the building still bears the structural hallmark of the bungalow foundation and other sections of the foundation were re-enforced to accommodate the duplex. A classical case of non-coherent structural stability flow. If a section of the building is "all round chained" like you've observed and other congruential sections are not, don't you think there is the risk of differential settlement which may explain partly the vertical cracks? And for the horizontal crack, you've talk about the roof; that the roof may be exerting pressure on a section of the building with load bearing walls not all round chained evidencing the crack, but the other congruential section is properly chained with no problem. So it's evident that the building is not spreading the roof load evenly.....again non-coherent structural stability flow? I've seen this happen again and again in the trade and often here on Nairaland. We over re-enforce a section of our project by building columns here and there without the re-enforcement transmitting to other sections of the building to eventually evenly distribute any resulting load, so it stands to reason that if you exert pressure on such structure, a section will hold better than other sections leading to cracks or worse collapse. Let us know your final outcome. Well done. 1 Like |

Okay. The test was conducted for the sole purpose to see how fine aggregate as do coarse aggregate influence the desired strength of concrete. For this purpose, two tests were conducted with one using granite dust as fine aggregate & the other using the popular laterite (sharp sand). You see, before now, there have always been mixed reactions concerning this granite dust but, the below results nipped it in the bud. Now, my findings: 1. The granite dust gave a blending color to the mix as oppose to sharp sand. 2. The granite dust proves very difficult to bond with the mix ( I used trowel for both experiments & I'm certain it is same even with an automated mixer) 3. The desired strength was 25N/mm² but, sharp sand gave me 26N/mm² while granite dust gave 16N/mm² 4. For some reason, I believe the workability of sharp sand is better than granite dust. Since it was a time limited experiment, I couldn't make a general conclusion but, however, the strength is what really left me dazed. N:B ==> A mix of 1: 3/2 : 3 ( 4: 6: 12) was used which I believe does not have any detrimental effect on the suppose granite dust. It's just a mix, afterall. I made the summary as short as I could.
