All I can say is kudos to you. Well done bros. Fantastic response..

God bless you Madam.

First, l never "condemn" people without education.
What l said was that "Work Experience" can NEVER replace "Formal Education".
They both have their place in life but like you pointed out, an educated person will eventually gain the "experience" on the job but l cant fathom how an illiterate who refuses to go to school, will acquire a first degree! grin grin

Due to truancy and/or the circumstances of life, we all cant have top-notch education but l would rather educate my own children to a minimum of a first degree (I have one who is almost finishing Medical School overseas), than build houses for them or spoil them with Money.
I am surprised that these people keep twisting my 'position' and focusing on my person?

One went about insulting "Educated/Certificated people and claiming they are not employed or "who education don help"? shocked
I responded that "before you can even table your experience in a Trade, you have to show your CERTIFICATE (no matter how lowly) that shows you have the "basic, pre-requisite education".
I used the example of Cleaners, Security Men, Hotel Hands, e.t.c to buttress my point. This people must sit and study to have a "SafePass Certificate".... in western Countries, before they can do any of the above menial jobs

In a world of over 7Billion people, how can a minuscule hundred, be used as proof that "Education does not matter or that "Work experience" can replace education?
Is this a kind of "age-related jaundice" of the brain or what

The girl whose picture was posted might just "pass through school" without allowing her "education/school" to pass through her (but l dont want to knock her because l dont know her circumstances to the detail).
I know that even if you read Yoruba or English and you are sound enough to graduate with 2^1 (as opposed to most children of today who cheat through school and come out with the Certificate but they are actually empty-headed) ... you wont need to carry a placard to earn a living:
what is wrong with starting a "neighbourhood lesson" where you teach younger ones and their parent pay you?
I have engaged a lot of under-graduates who come to my house to teach my children, when they were very young and they make good money, hopping from one "home lesson" to another, abi l lie?
So, how did she end-up with placard, if she is good at what she studied?
That is where l think "half-education" comes into play. If hse is soundly educated, her mind and brain will propose better options to her than this undignified shame she is putting herself through

Again, l find it funny that these illiterates will only use a 'bad example" like this to buttress their failure and inadequacy!

What about the hundred of thousands of graduates that work in Shell, Mobil, NNPC, Banks, NLNG, Doctors, e.t.c whose starting salary as a trainee is not less than 200K monthly?
How many 2^1 Graduates roam the street in US, UK and other Western climes?
Just because Nigeria is ruled by the same class of half-baked ....and stark illiterates like we have foaming in the mouth here, is why some of our Graduates are having it rough but it is not the norm.

I have asked that they show me just One Bridge that was "designed and built" by anyone without education, they cant but instead went on a tangential rant!
Infact,l cant believe that in 2016, someone will openly say that "Education does not help"?

Anyway, on reflection, l realize that the only people who always tow this line of thinking are either stark illiterates or people with "failed/half education (which they say is even more dangerous! grin )

It is sad that even supposedly grown-ups cant differentiate between "having money" and "being educated" and having "work experience".
The are not the same thing and are not mutually exclusive but the better person, by a mile-off, is "he who is well educated and made money legitimately from it and gained 'work experience' over ...and with their education".

Any fool can have money at anytime (you can even win a lottery! ) ... but it takes time, diligence and dedication to have quality education.
And if you are well-educated, it will show in EVERYTHING you do or say. You cant hide it.
You will even be a cut above the crowd if you now add "experience" to your education.

For example, l work with personnel who have spent +30yrs in the military, who will never rise beyond "Warrant officer 2" till they are honourably discharged (retire).... while a young boy of less than twenty-two years who has a BSc. joins the military as Second Lieutenant!
Is it not his "certificated education" that propelled him over and above the "uneducated one with decades of experience"?
Why did the one with 30+ years "Experience" not come and claim "l sabi pass am"? grin grin

Why have we not have a school cert with fifty years experience, become the Head of NNPC?
How many of these dunce foaming in the mouth here will allow a "Chemist" with ten years "shop-trade" experience perform a surgery on you or your spouse, in case of serious illness?
why would they insist on a well rounded, University trained and qualified Doctor
grin grin

How can these guys not get it that "education" does more than just provide a "job-path-way" for people?.... it develops you mentally, it broadens your horizon and make your brain think and work in ways that are "beyond limitations".

Honestly, l just laugh at the idiocy of this argument. grin

Below is a post by @Abdulwastexc , that shows the difference between an "educated/certificated" professional .... and an illiterate Artisan with "experience". These illiterates need to sit down and study the difference properly.

Braaabus! Where did you see the above happen! shocked shocked

Tiles getting burnt by hot oil from frying pan!
Tell me you are just being funny? grin grin

Chai, dearis god o!

But really, l have seen European Traders import products from China, repack and re-sell in Europe.
I am referring to Security products like CCTV PTZ Cameras, PIR's, e.t.c (which l bought out of, some years back) and saw same on Chinese trade site, confirmed as Chinese manufacture.

Having said that, l think not all Chinese products are bad (on the contrary, most are good), just that our own people go to China and specifically tell them to reduce the quality (so cost of manufacture can reduce), while they come to Nigeria and sell it as the same price of the unadulterated/original one.
Take the case of Automotive batteries as an example - Same body casing, same name, same price but one has less CELLS inside it!

There are also a lot of Chinese-made products in America (you just need to look at the Trade Deficit between the two countries to get convinced) so, generally speaking, l think the problem lies with unscrupulous Nigerian importers and their "cut-corners approach" to making extra money

To be honest it has never ever been the chinease fault but our brothers who go to the factory and demand low grades. The stuff from china that comes to the UK meet a specific industrial standard which we do not have in Nigeria.so anybody can ask chinease manufacturer to package anything they want and pay for it.
I had that expirience with thoughened glass and cc cameras.

As very untrue this may sound, it's the truth. The owner of the project is one of us here. I was equally shocked when I was told but who is to blame? The buyer? The seller? The importer? Or the government who choose not to control what get past its border? The manufacturer? The greedy businessman who ask for knockoffs to deceive unsuspecting home owners, builders and construction professionals?

When we argue some things here, I keep wondering why we can't tell ourself the truth. "Will I know the difference if I am the one buying it myself?"
I've said it times without number that some contractors may not know they are been ripped off when they are less informed.

Take for instance the issue of sharp sand as explained earlier. There are different types of sharp sand and their cost varies. Will a client know the difference? NO! He can only rely on what he hear from Mr A or what he confirmed from Mr X.

I bought some original toilet fittings sometimes ago and unknown to us everything inside it were changed to a knockoff version and it was packed and handed over to us. We didn't know until when we installed and we were having issues.
Will you have ever imagined paying triple market value for a product and getting a substandard fittings. This guys are good at what they do and so I've made a resolve to do my thing with verified businesses even if it comes at an extra cost.

I'm not the type of likes spending money on routine maintenance. If I can have a maintenance free build, I'll do my best to get it.

thank God someone here new how to build basic CNC machine for wood milling. Bros not only you want to go back to Naija, my self and other team off Engineers we're waiting for the light situation to improved to came back to start building industrial machinery like we used to do before we left Naija about 20 years ago. If we did then in various small scale companys like plastic, wood, glass, bottles, nylon, molds for shoes, even body lotion, can one imagine 20 year improve knowledge from the west. Again almost all this items material are locally source in Naija, it's a shame to situation that make us scatter all over.

This is why I prefer products from USA (#1) and certain European countries.

They have strict product control and they'll be hard pressed to wash down their products at the requests of ineffectual, kleptomaniac, corrupt and frankly moral less traders that litters the Nigerian business landscape.

@Lastpage.....if the importers don't do such, no one will buy them. I have been to China and I know for a fact that when you walk into a factory and request to buy goods, the first question they ask you before they quote price is " which standard?". There is American Standard, European Standard, Gulf Countries Standard and African Standard and even within the Africa, there is South African Standard, North African Standard, Normal African Standard and Nigerian Standard. The prices of all this standard varies even though they all look the same. The standard organization of all countries set the quality of the standard for every product imported into their countries. Ours in Nigeria may never take sample of products to test them to ascertain if the quality is okay. They are more inclined towards kickbacks.

I am not sure if we are on the same "plane" here, Sir!

You are talking about "Options" , like for example, if you buy a Car manufactured in America, there may be more "Options" in it (like Cruise control, ability to use internet Apps and listen/Watch TV stations on its screen, e.t.c .... compared to the same Car manufactured say in France.

These are all Options, which we call "Spec".
They are "additions to the "Basic standard" of a perfectly working car.
In other words, your car is as good as any, without these "Options" and will do its job and last the mileage, as those with these "options".
A lot of people, including myself, will buy an ORIGINAL product, with guarantee that it is the original, even at premium price!

On the other hand, what we are discussing here is about "adulteration, cannibalization and faking" which is leading to the distribution of SUB-STANDARD/ NOT-FIT-FOR-PURPOSE GOODS.
These sort of goods are dangerous and can kill in extreme circumstances.

I have seen these "Nigerian standard" (as you put it, but l call it FAKE) Batteries burn some cars,
l have seen fake door locks get stuck and lock house-owners out,
l have seen fake Drugs worsen and kill already ill children (who did not know they were taking "chalk, instead of a prescription drug!),
l have seen adulterated food send the innocent to hospital,
l have seen "fake" Cable start a fire and burn houses,
l have seen fake circuit breakers which refuse to perform its job and allowed circuit systems to be over-loaded.
I have been tricked into buying supposedly "U.K standard" switches which went kaput within a few months of installation e.t.c.

Infact, we cant compare or use "OPTIONS" .... to justify ADULTERATION/FAKE PRODUCTS. They are miles apart.

We all (Nigerians) know what is good and what is right but we can decide to do what is wrong and evil..... or do the right thing.
I suspect that the Chinese manufacturers have come to be able to identify "Nigerians" and know exactly what they would demand for.
I dont see them asking an European or American or even anyone in "white skin" (very annoying!) such silly question whether they want Fake or original!
They know the implications of bringing such "dead products" into their environment where the fill weight of the law will be visited on them.

These guys are simply CRIMINALS ...... but they like to think of themselves as "smart"!

Like you pointed-out, its a complete failure of "the System" .

From SON, to NAFDAC and other regulatory Agencies not doing their job properly or "looking the other way" after collecting some filthy lucre, to the Police being corrupt and the "Justice System" (Judges and Lawyers) being slow and full of corrupt practitioners.

A combination of all these Agencies of Government is what has turned our environment to a very dangerous jungle for any upright person. undecided undecided

I would not intentionally buy an expire Chewing gum for my neighbours daughter (not to mention my own daughter), yet some Nigerians go ahead to manipulate expiry dates on food items!

I have heard the silly argument about "expiry date" not being "important" but l wonder if these people making such argument have any conscience or they are just after quick but illicit profit?

Why not just buy a product that is 'in-date' and sell to the public.....when its not as if it is out of stuck and you have no-choice?

Anyway, we are who we are.

I salute you people write up about tiles issue
There are many factors that affect the building components/materials in Nigeria which I and you knows very well
Let me take tiles and water closet as case study
Most if not all tiles sold in orile and some company claimed and engraved as Spanish are real Spanish tiles the issue is that most Nigeria will go there and ask the Spaniards to reduce the standard so that 30pec of Nigeria can use something different from low chinko made that can serve at least 20-30yrs (how many home owner can think of using China tiles b4 let alone Spanish what most people use then was Angelita tiles and carpet, rug some even put paper on floor at village but now village people are now using porcelain tiles) although I don't support this level o o more so some big companies here in Lagos do sold good chinko tiles as Spanish YES I mean it but it a good standard all NBA packaging ....we know the level Naa .i no be jjc and I'm not sleeping I know what I'm typing although what influence this is bcs there cheap labour and cheap raw material in the land of chinkos .even some China tiles are more costly than Spanish YES. And the issue is that those company has a name to protect so they do select medium / high class of tiles for there customers but that doesn't mean good things doesn't come from orile but there are bad egg among good ones here (just like Nigeria poli.....) and one thing again if you get tiles for 3500 in company same tiles will sold for 3000 in orile don't be surprised it's the thing `orile are ready to sell and gain 100 or lesser per meter.bcs no much expenses to do, how many staff will he pay salary to, but company case it's not the same, I can continue but

I am interested also, what is the price of the door?

Can't Nigerians artisans make these doors if given a sample? because I use to see good wooden doors in Benin city, Edo state. I believe we can get good looking doors in Nigeria.

Dont try "Benin-Doors" at all!

These guys make the best door anywhere l have seen in Nigeria.
if only they can incorporate "proper finishings" into them, like laminating it to improve its aesthetics, l can bet their doors will best any door, anywhere in the world.

I guess machinery and power is a factor is such refinement

Sadly, it's the same story that plagues all our industries. It's extremely difficult to manufacture in Nigeria, whereas it's far more profitable and less risky to simply import. To wit, you'll need to surmount the following challenges:

- invest time and effort to learn about the technical details of an industry
- buy quality machines
- buy quality raw materials (treated wood, well lumbered and straight)
- hire and train staff to care about quality
- be prepared to ruin 50% of inventory in the learning process
- purchase reliable energy for your factory
- convince a Nigerian bank to loan you money to start a factory for all these upfront costs
- convince consumers to buy Made in Nigeria

It takes 3-5 years from start to profitability if you manufacture. You just have to buy and sell to make a profit if you simply import. I've become much less critical of our import mentality after understanding all these obstacles.

I salute your thoughts Senor!

We have a "get-rich-quick" mentality which means we can WAIT to invest and nurture business that will become profitable in say 5yrs time..... and remain profitable even into the next generation to come.

Now factor that with our "bad" business environment where a small business has to virtually become its own "local govt" grin grin .... needing to provide its own Power, Road, Water, e.t.c.

Its a high mountain to climb......
I am hoping the Govt, this Govt, will set the pace and we can build on it, as the years roll-by
