africaken254: russia is a step ahead due to its already operational systems in the supersonic cruise missile category plus Zircon is undergoing developmental tests. however to be fair, us is doing lots of research and developing supersonic and hypersonic cruise missile ie rattlrs and X-51 based on waverider concept. however it is lagging due to its lack of experience and lack of operational doctrine on operating such high speed missiles. rattlrs (revolutionary approach to time critical long range strike) x 51 wave rider interesting thing is hypersonic brahmos 2 is also based on wave rider concept . so it is plausible that zircon will share the same looks as that of brahmos 2 since brahmos 2 is speculated to be a direct derivative of Hypersonic Zircon with Indian software and other tweaks just like brahmos. Indian scramjet engine mounted on a rocket undergoing developmental test flight. India is is going to test better optimized version of scramjet engine within next 2-4 months in support of brahmos 2 ,HSTDV, Two Stage To Orbit (TSTO) spacecraft. i am linking this article which i wrote in the science section of nairaland , hope some may find it useful https://www.nairaland.com/3023184/extreme-military-engineering-fascinating-facts/2#44349793 on page 2 lastly i apologize for derailing the thread, i realized it just now so i hope u will excuse me this time regards. 1 Like |

giles14: The Dauphin carries 12, so 2 Dauphin helicopters would carry 24 troops. That's enough capacity to deploy QRF. The Dauphin provides the best of both worlds. |

Xbee007: It is a utility helicopter. It can be armed with rockets, 50.Cal and missiles if a customer wants. Similar to what Indonesia and Malaysia have. It can perform a wide variety of roles. The Nigerian Navy has 5 Agusta A109 helicopters, 4 Bell 412 and 2 Agusta AW139s in service. The Air Force has 12 AW109s in service. 1 Like |

you see african countries have the brainpower, actually every country has the brainpower, problem lies with its utilization, lack of policy, lack of a roadmap , government support etc. to develop something from scratch is like re inventing the wheel. best idea is to tie up with friendly countries like Russia , china , France , USA , south Korea Israel etc depending on your comfort level with any of these following countries, for starters no need to go for something big, main aim should be to develop the human resources of your countries in the core sectors related to defense like metallurgy , semiconductor technology , composites , aeronautical technology , system integration and management , optronics etc in cooperation with the above countries. once you have the labs and testing centers together with a well trained man power then you are well set to bargain with the countries like Russia china USA to co-develop advance weapon systems which in turn will provide you with better skills and most importantly develop productionizing capabilities. R & D for developing a weapon is a big headache, but productionizing (commercializing) and enforcing quality control is a bigger headache . what African countries need is a staggered long term road-map and you need to stick to it no matter what, and someday you will be setting benchmarks. a curious example is India , with LCA , ARJUN still painfully grinding on it looks like they are the stupidest people on earth. however a closer look will tell you a different story. the infrastructure and R & D labs and trained manpower they built up due to these never ending projects has started to bear fruits albeit in small amounts for now. they are now in a position to demand equal participation and develop relevant technologies according to their own needs and terms in close cooperation with other advance countries, and not just end up in a buyer seller relationship. it might surprise you all that Russia and France are competing to provide technology for Indian SSN. why ? because India has a working indigenous baby SSBN arihant (with certain Russian inputs). so whats the point in denying technology when they might do it on their own someday. failures will always be there but one must try, also one must have in-house technical industrial base and human resources to absorb any TOT being offered only then can one develop ones indigenous defense capability . its time to think african, ( lets hash tag it lol ) one small step at a time towards the big step. hope i made sense regards. 3 Likes |

nemesis2u: I can say what we in Nigeria require is the commitment from the Nigerian government to buy local, and big Nigerian industry players to grow interest in the business of arms. When this two forces come together, we would now seem a lot more activity in the business of defence. For now we have Proforce defence, a company producing armoured vehicles similar to the range of vehicles Streit group has on offer, and a couple defence surveillance, vessel building, ICT centered companies and body armour manufacturing. The Igirigi is our first commercially produced vehicle, looking forward to september-November of this year, we expect to see more vehicles from Proforce for the military and law enforcement. They are quite insignificant considering the size of Nigeria, but are important steps moving forward nonetheless. 1 Like |

Henry240: correct, as a Nigerian u would know the best about Nigerian defense industry. u must have heard of "man in the loop" its a military term. what is required is "end user in the loop" end user here is the military. when a defense company develops a product the end user must be involved at all levels of develop , specially important for companies trying to compete against international competition. it will shorten the developmental time period , allow the scientists and technicians to incorporate the end user requirements in a case by case manner duly vetted by the military at every critical developmental stage, allow practical user end recommendations to be factored in much earlier , allows early fault rectification while saving time and money among others. end result u will have a system designed and developed by scientists and technicians but vetted, nurtured and owned by the end user (military) from the conception stage to its production stage. then the end user will fight tooth and nail against the government for its procurement , which i don't think will be necessary at all in the first place. 2 Likes |

MikeCZA:don't no why we africans are so quick at using the word corruption''. Corruption isn't and has never be the problem of africa not even good policies. But our major challenge has always been lack of entrepreneural mindset for the people and a visionless govt.(forget about vision 2020 or whatever). Was watching a program on CCTV and saw some young chinese college students coming together to build their own business. Why can't we do same here in africa. Every country is corrupt as long humans are their leaders. 2 Likes |
